  • Rare Vigilance

    Rare Vigilance by M.A. Grant

RECOMMENDED: Rare Vigilance by M.A. Grant is $1.99! Lara gave this one an A:

If you need to escape from the world for a bit and revel in a dangerous paranormal, then this book will deliver.

Everything has a price. Especially the truth.

From the author of Prince of Air and Darkness comes the first in a thrilling new paranormal series.

Former Marine Atlas Kinkaid knows not to ask questions about the clients he protects at the behest of the elite Whitethorn security agency. Just like he doesn’t like anyone asking about his scars—scars left by a mysterious attack that haunts his every waking moment.

Consumed by the need to find out what happened to him, Atlas takes a job providing security to Cristian Slava, the indolent—and gorgeous—son of a notorious businessman. Cristian seems to be just another entitled client, but when nights at the club turn into secret meetings and people start going missing, Atlas realizes there’s more to Cristian—and to protecting him—than meets the eye.

But the same people who are after Cristian have something Atlas desperately craves: they know exactly what happened the fateful night he was attacked—and are willing to tell him everything…

    For a price.

  • A Duke Like No Other

A Duke Like No Other by Valerie Bowman

A Duke Like No Other by Valerie Bowman is $1.99! This is book nine in the Playful Brides series. It should be fine as a stand alone, but correct me if I’m wrong. The main characters are an estranged married couple.

First comes love, then comes marriage. Unless it’s the otherway around. . .

General Mark Grimaldi has sacrificed everything for his military career, working his way through the ranks without the benefit of a nobleman’s title. Now, his years of dedication are about to pay off—with an offer for a prestigious promotion to Home Secretary. There’s only one condition: Mark must be married. Aside from the small matter of not actually wanting to be wed, Mark faces another troubling problem: he already has a wife.

Nicole Huntington Grimaldi has spent ten contented years in France without her husband—and without regret. When Mark asks her to return to London and play the part of his beloved wife, she sees her chance. But neither of them is prepared for news that will throw Mark’s future into chaos…nor the undeniable desire they’ve rekindled. Maybe happily-ever-after can happen the second time around in A Duke Like No Other, the next Regency romance from Valerie Bowman.

  • Highland Warrior

    Highland Warrior by Heather McCollum

Highland Warrior by Heather McCollum is 99c! This is book two in the Sons of Sinclair historical romance series. This is also a somewhat recent-ish release, coming out this past spring.

Joshua Sinclair was once the fiercest and most notorious warrior of the mighty Sinclair clan of Northern Scotland. But now there’s nothing and no one that can make him take up arms again. Except a beautiful woman, it seems.

When Kára Flett, daughter of a fallen Norse chief, finds herself unexpectedly sheltering the strongest, most brutal warrior in the land, she throws together a risky and outrageous plan to bring him to her side. Threats of violence bounce right off him. Offers of gold seem to entice him even less. Desperate enough to use the pleas of the village children to sway him, she’s shocked when he’s completely unmoved. There’s only one tactic left for her: seduction.

Her hasty proposition falls completely by the wayside, though, as she and the Highlander come together in a carnal inferno. But bringing him into her life also brings his enemies to her clan’s doorstep—the very clan Kára is trying to protect. And as their feelings deepen, Joshua will have to decide between duty and love once and for all.

  • The Darkest Part of the Forest

The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black

RECOMMENDED: The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black is $3.99! Carrie read this book and gave it a B grade:

The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black, is a fantasy YA with romance elements. I’m a huge Holly Black fan – she’s been a major force in urban fantasy and her books are always gorgeous to read. This book had some problems, and the romance is pretty tacked on, but it’s excellent in terms of plot and dark fantasy atmosphere.

Children can have a cruel, absolute sense of justice. Children can kill a monster and feel quite proud of themselves. A girl can look at her brother and believe they’re destined to be a knight and a bard who battle evil. She can believe she’s found the thing she’s been made for.

Hazel lives with her brother, Ben, in the strange town of Fairfold where humans and fae exist side by side. The faeries’ seemingly harmless magic attracts tourists, but Hazel knows how dangerous they can be, and she knows how to stop them. Or she did, once.

At the center of it all, there is a glass coffin in the woods. It rests right on the ground and in it sleeps a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointed as knives. Hazel and Ben were both in love with him as children. The boy has slept there for generations, never waking.

    Until one day, he does…

As the world turns upside down, Hazel tries to remember her years pretending to be a knight. But swept up in new love, shifting loyalties, and the fresh sting of betrayal, will it be enough?

Kate Canterbary’s HARD PRESSED is a 99-cent KDD today. It’s the second book in Canterbary’s Talbott’s Cove series but can be read as a standalone. It’s about a bookstore owner who, upon discovering that her long-time crush is gay (his story is told in Canterbary’s FRESH CATCH), gets ten levels of drunk and ends up being taken care of by the town’s new sheriff. Of course, a romance blossoms. Another smart and sexy story (with an excellent female friendship and really good consent discussions) from the always reliable Canterbary.

Allison Bechdel’s graphic novel, ARE YOU MY MOTHER?, is a $2.99 KDD today. Bechdel’s FUN HOME, about growing up with a closeted gay father in a home that also housed the family’s funeral business, is one of my favorite graphic novels. ARE YOU MY MOTHER? continues Bechdel’s story, focusing on her relationship with her discontented mother. Highly recommended.

It’s clear from Carrie’s review but the blurb for The Darkest Part of the Forest is a little confusing. It’s definitely not a romance book, but it includes two romantic relationships. The book is a horror-tinged fantasy adventure and coming of age story with a female protagonist. There are two young romantic relationships in the book (one m/f and one m/m), but although they drive the plot, neither of them are fully fleshed out (although the m/m is probably more plot important). There’s more focus on the relationship between the main character and her brother. Honestly, I found that refreshing. YA is usually better to me when it focuses less on any romances and more on the characters discovering themselves.

Breaking Badger by Shelly Laurenston is 1.99 today at amazon (and I think b&n and apple?). It came out a few months agi in August 2021.
@DiscoDollyDeb I think Canterbary’s new book is coming out 12/28 but you can’t pre-order on amazon. You can pre-order other places, but then when it drops it will only be available at amazon (if I understand her newsletter email correctly)…you had mentioned yesterday that book might be postponed

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Maria F: Thank you so much for the update. I thought she had pulled the book and I was really bummed (I’ve been looking forward to Sebastian’s story). I’ll add the book back to my calendar.

I am so tempted by RARE VIGILANCE, but am dragging my feet because it ends on a cliffhanger. Although I never remember I own a book until years after the fact, maybe that would be OK here.
