A Marriage of Convenience, Romantic Suspense, & More

  • Phoenix Unbound

    Phoenix Unbound by Grace Draven

Phoenix Unbound by Grace Draven is $1.99! I gave this one a C-, but I’d still recommend it with large caveats. 1) All of the trigger warnings. 2) It’s dense and the slow burn is quite slow. 3) There’s a magical infertility cure. Draven’s writing is always top notch and I’m curious about the next book, which follows a different couple.

A woman with power over fire and illusion and an enslaved son of a chieftain battle a corrupt empire in this powerful and deeply emotional romantic fantasy from the USA Todaybestselling author of Radiance.

Every year, each village is required to send a young woman to the Empire’s capital–her fate to be burned alive for the entertainment of the masses. For the last five years, one small village’s tithe has been the same woman. Gilene’s sacrifice protects all the other young women of her village, and her secret to staying alive lies with the magic only she possesses.

    But this year is different.

Azarion, the Empire’s most famous gladiator, has somehow seen through her illusion–and is set on blackmailing Gilene into using her abilities to help him escape his life of slavery. And unknown to Gilene, he also wants to reclaim the birthright of his clan.

To protect her family and village, she will risk everything to return to the Empire–and burn once more.

  • White Whiskey Bargain

White Whiskey Bargain by Jodie Slaughter

RECOMMENDED: White Whiskey Bargain by Jodie Slaughter is $2.99! Shana wrote a Lightning Review for this one and gave it an A-:

I was pleasantly surprised to be sucked into the book, and weeks later, I’m still thinking about my favorite chapters.

“I want to give you my gratitude someplace other than that pretty mouth of yours.” – Javier Meza

The sudden and tragic death of her mother throws Hannah Hawkins into a position she doesn’t feel at all prepared for. With the duty of leading her family’s decades-long moonshining business weighing heavy on her shoulders, the last thing she needs is something making her transition even harder. Unfortunately, that’s exactly what she gets. A band of vicious new players has arrived in small-town Harlan, Kentucky, and while what they really want remains a mystery, it quickly becomes clear they’re willing to stoop to dark lengths to get it. To fight off a beast, Hannah realizes she needs to join forces with a rival.

Javier Meza may be the sole heir to his family’s moonshining empire, but he’s certainly no leader. He has no head for business or diplomacy, preferring to spend his days in the trenches, making corn liquor with the rest of the “cooks.” That doesn’t mean he isn’t more than willing to step up and take charge when his family finds themselves in danger. Forming a shaky partnership with the Hawkins family is one thing, but marrying Hannah Hawkins to keep their deal on the straight and narrow is something else entirely.

From All Things Burn author, Jodie Slaughter comes a multicultural romance about illegal white whiskey, a marriage of convenience between decades-long rival families, and Black Appalachia. Readers of Kenya Wright, Theodora Taylor, and Lucy Score & Claire Kingsley will enjoy this full-length romance novel with a strong heroine, swoon-worthy hero, and a very satisfying HEA.

  • The One I Love to Hate

The One I Love to Hate by Amanda Weaver

The One I Love to Hate by Amanda Weaver is $1.99! This is book one in the Romano Sisters contemporary romance and has an enemies to lovers theme. I’m pretty sure I bought this one when it came out, but I am a digital packrat and quickly forgot about it.

    Don’t hate the player…

Achieve lifelong dream of becoming a reporter? Check.

Land dream job working with her idol at the Brooklyn Daily PostCheck.

Navigate working across the street from her college nemesis?

    Okay, yes, hate the player.

But Jessica Romano doesn’t have time to be bothered by the likes of Alex Drake. She’s struck up a fiery online flirtation with a mystery man and—thanks to Alex’s family’s gossip website, competitor Click News—she also has a newspaper to save.

But she is bothered by Alex. She’s bothered by the fact that Click News keeps scooping the Daily Post’s stories. And by how Alex always gets what he wants.

And she’s really bothered by how she can’t seem to stop staring at his stupid, sexy face.

Or how their competitive banter is starting to sound like familiar foreplay.

Suddenly Jess isn’t just bothered by Alex; she’s hot and bothered. Hot sex and swoony romance are almost enough to make her forget the vast divide between old media and new…and the Romanos from Brooklyn and the Drakes of Manhattan.

  • Ultimate Courage

    Ultimate Courage by Piper Drake

Ultimate Courage by Piper J. Drake is $1.99! This is book two in the True Heroes series, which often features veteran heroes and therapy dogs. All of Drake’s books in this series seem to have really good overall ratings on Goodreads. Are you a fan?

LOVE IS AN ACT OF BRAVERY

Retired Navy SEAL Alex Rojas is putting his life back together, one piece at a time. Being a single dad to his young daughter and working at Hope’s Crossing Kennels to help rehab a former guard dog, he struggles every day to control his PTSD. But when Elisa Hall shows up, on the run and way too cautious, she unleashes his every protective instinct.

Elisa’s past never stays in her rearview mirror for long, and she refuses to put anyone else in danger. But with Alex guarding her so fiercely yet looking at her so tenderly, she’s never felt safer . . . or more terrified that the secrets she keeps could put countless people in grave peril. The only way for both to fully escape their demons will take the ultimate act of courage: letting go and learning to trust each other.

“Phoenix Unbound” was a hard read for me, but I ended up really enjoying it, pretty much despite my normal reading tastes. Oddly enough, the follow up novel was one I had to put down because the stakes were just too high.

I will say, I probably would not have finished PU unless it was written by Draven.
