  • Talk Sweetly to Me

Talk Sweetly to Me by Courtney Milan

RECOMMENDED: Talk Sweetly to Me by Courtney Milan is $2.99! This is part of the Brothers Sinister series, though retailers and Goodreads seem confused on whether it’s book 4.5 or 5 in the series. Carrie gave this one a B:

It’s a solid novella that has a science heroine (y’all know how I feel about scientific protagonists of any gender), a strong social justice stance (yay, team) and plenty of lovely writing.

Nobody knows who Miss Rose Sweetly is, and she prefers it that way. She’s a shy, mathematically-minded shopkeeper’s daughter who dreams of the stars. Women like her only ever come to attention through scandal. She’ll take obscurity, thank you very much.

All of England knows who Stephen Shaughnessy is. He’s an infamous advice columnist and a known rake. When he moves into the house next door to Rose, she discovers that he’s also wickedly funny, devilishly flirtatious, and heart-stoppingly handsome. But when he takes an interest in her mathematical work, she realizes that Mr. Shaughnessy isn’t just a scandal waiting to happen. He’s waiting to happen to her…and if she’s not careful, she’ll give in to certain ruination.

  • The Earl Not Taken

The Earl Not Taken by A.S. Fenichel

The Earl Not Taken by A.S. Fenichel is 99c! It is full price elsewhere. This is the first book in The Wallflowers of West Lane series and I like the cover for this one. Readers liked the heroine, but found the plot to be rather thing. Any thoughts from the Bitchery?

Left standing on the side while their contemporaries marry into society, four young ladies forge a bond to guard each other from a similar fate . . .

Finishing school failed to make a proper lady of Penelope Arrington. But as a Wallflower of West Lane, Poppy has a far more vital role—she and her three best friends have made a pact to protect each other from the clutches of dangerous, disreputable men. So when one of them is about to be married off to a duke sight unseen, Poppy makes it her mission to divine the prospective husband’s true character. If only she didn’t require the aid of London’s most unsuitable rake.

Rhys Draper, Earl of Marsden, has known the headstrong Poppy since she was a young girl naïve to the ways of men. To her eternal chagrin—and to his vague amusement—they have been at odds over the memory of embarrassing first encounter all these years. Now, with his services in need, Rhys sees a chance to finally clear the air between them. Instead, he is surprised by the heat of their feelings. If the two do not tread carefully, they may end up in a most agreeably compromising position . . .

  • The Tycoon

    The Tycoon by M O'Keefe

The Tycoon by M. O’Keefe is FREE! This is an angsty contemporary and from what I remember about it, I liked it, but I also like O’Keefe’s stuff as a general rule. This one was also an answer to a HaBO!

The cruel and beautiful man who ruined my life has everything he wants—everything except me.

Five years ago, Clayton Rorick loved me. Or so I thought. Turned out he only wanted to get his hands on my daddy’s company. Heartbroken, I ran away with nothing but the clothes on my back. Like a twisted Cinderella. When my father dies, leaving my sisters in a desperate situation, it’s up to me to help them.

I’ll have to beg the man who broke my heart to save us.

But Clayton hasn’t forgotten me and what he wants in exchange for his help is…my body, my heart and my soul.

  • Hidden

    Hidden by Rebecca Zanetti

Hidden by Rebecca Zanetti is $1.99! This is the first book in her Deep Ops romantic suspense series and I’m very curious about it. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads, which is impressive. However, if you’ve tried Zanetti’s books in the past and have mixed feelings, readers definitely suggest trying the sample first.

Hide. That’s all Pippa can do to escape the terror chasing her. But now that she’s off the grid in a safe house, she finds plenty of interesting things to watch through the window. Like her new neighbor, with his startling green eyes, killer smile, and sexy bad-boy tattoo . . .

Run. Malcolm West is fleeing the hell he unleashed in his last assignment as an undercover cop. A backwoods bungalow sounds like the perfect place to start over. Until he discovers he’s been set up . . .

Fight. Someone’s gone to a lot of trouble to bring them together. No matter how much he resents that, and his own driving needs, Malcolm will have to dig deep and let loose the banished killer inside himself, or Pippa’s fears could come true faster than the flip of a bolt in a lock . . .

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

THE TYCOON is the first of a four-book series. It’s a good, angsty story. You can safely skip the second book, THE BODYGUARD by S. Doyle, which has an extremely controlling hero. The third and fourth books, THE BASTARD and THE COWBOY by Julie Kriss and Molly O’Keefe (again), respectively, are well worth reading too.

  2. Darlynne says:

FYI: The HIDDEN listing seems to be confused: part Laura Griffin, part Rebecca Zanetti. Then again, maybe it’s me, which is quite on brand this morning.

  3. Leslie says:

The wrong Hidden book is pictured. The one on sale is the Rebecca Zanetti one.

  4. Amanda says:

Should be fixed now! Had an issue with WP eating parts of the first draft for some reason.

  5. Annie Kate says:

If you like angsty contemporaries full of rich people who suck at emotions, I recommend The Tycoon, which I really enjoyed. Having the massive betrayal come out in the first chapter as opposed to the black moment made it a more interesting story and a better romance.

(cw for past descriptions of child abuse, though, for anyone who likes to know that going in)

I’ve read and liked the Glasgow Lads series. I also liked what I read of the Jay Northcote NA series although all of the stories I read in it were very, very low conflict, and very accurate about being a 20 something, to the point of almost being boring – lots of video games and studying and pubs and cheese and toast along with a lot of sex and banter.

A lot of people loved the Roan Parrish Middle of Somewhere series but I found it annoying – imo her writing improved in her later books.

The second book in the series is also on sale for .99. @amazon. Book 3 is 7.19.

  8. Darlynne says:

@Cleo: A second vote for the Glasgow Lads by Avery Cockburn. “They’re out. They’re proud. They’re a wee bit daft.” What’s not to like?

  9. Kit C. says:

The Earl Not Taken was a DNF very quickly for me. Not sure if that helps anyone, but only a few chapters in all the characters felt trite and I dislike it when the hero suddenly develops an intense interest in the heroine’s “assets” now that she’s “all grown up.” They were having tea in public and he’s just ogling her.

Love the cover art, but if you want four ladies banding together, Kleypas’ Wallflowers are a better (but not perfect!) read.
