Wow, These Kindle Daily Deals!

  • Accidentally Engaged

    Accidentally Engaged by Farah Heron

RECOMMENDED: Accidentally Engaged by Farah Heron is $2.99! Kiki reviewed this one and gave it an A-:

I cannot emphasize enough how hungry this book will make you.

Accidentally Engaged might be my top pick for “don’t read while hungry.” Between our heroine Reena’s bread baking (there’s rye, there’s challah, there’s an ongoing battle with a sourdough starter) and her Indian and East African cooking, I was craving a feast pretty much the whole time I was reading this book.

Reena Manji doesn’t love her career, her single status, and most of all, her family inserting themselves into every detail of her life. But when caring for her precious sourdough starters, Reena can drown it all out. At least until her father moves his newest employee across the hall–with hopes that Reena will marry him.

But Nadim’s not like the other Muslim bachelors-du-jour that her parents have dug up. If the Captain America body and the British accent weren’t enough, the man appears to love eating her bread creations as much as she loves making them. She sure as hell would never marry a man who works for her father, but friendship with a neighbor is okay, right? And when Reena’s career takes a nosedive, Nadim happily agrees to fake an engagement so they can enter a couples video cooking contest to win the artisan bread course of her dreams.

As cooking at home together brings them closer, things turn physical, but Reena isn’t worried. She knows Nadim is keeping secrets, but it’s fine— secrets are always on the menu where her family is concerned. And her heart is protected… she’s not marrying the man. But even secrets kept for self preservation have a way of getting out, especially when meddling parents and gossiping families are involved.

  • The City We Became

The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin

The City We Became by N.K. Jemisin is $3.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals and is being price-matched. Jemisin is a brilliant author and you should snap up any book when it’s on sale. This is a departure from Jemisin’s previous high fantasy titles and is more urban fantasy with some superhero vibes.

Five New Yorkers must come together in order to defend their city in the first book of a stunning new series by Hugo award-winning and NYT bestselling author N. K. Jemisin.

Every city has a soul. Some are as ancient as myths, and others are as new and destructive as children. New York City? She’s got five.

But every city also has a dark side. A roiling, ancient evil stirs beneath the earth, threatening to destroy the city and her five protectors unless they can come together and stop it once and for all.

  • Ancillary Justice

    Ancillary Justice by Anne Leckie

Ancillary Justice by Ann Leckie is $2.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals! I know Carrie really loves this book (and the entire series, I believe). It’s also a Hugo Award winner! Readers really loved the scifi world building, though some admitted wanting more action in the first book of the Imperial Radch series.

Winner of the Hugo, Nebula, British Science Fiction, Locus and Arthur C. Clarke Awards.

On a remote, icy planet, the soldier known as Breq is drawing closer to completing her quest.
Once, she was the Justice of Toren – a colossal starship with an artificial intelligence linking thousands of soldiers in the service of the Radch, the empire that conquered the galaxy.
Now, an act of treachery has ripped it all away, leaving her with one fragile human body, unanswered questions, and a burning desire for vengeance.

  • Somewhere Between Bitter and Sweet

Somewhere Between Bitter and Sweet by Laekan Zea Kemp

Somewhere Between Bitter and Sweet by Laekan Zea Kemp is $2.99 at Amazon and Barnes & Noble! This is a contemporary YA with both a romantic and foodie element. I love how detailed the cover art is!

I’m Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter meets Emergency Contact in this stunning story of first love, familial expectations, the power of food, and finding where you belong.

As an aspiring pastry chef, Penelope Prado has always dreamed of opening her own pastelería next to her father’s restaurant, Nacho’s Tacos. But her mom and dad have different plans — leaving Pen to choose between disappointing her traditional Mexican-American parents or following her own path. When she confesses a secret she’s been keeping, her world is sent into a tailspin. But then she meets a cute new hire at Nacho’s who sees through her hard exterior and asks the questions she’s been too afraid to ask herself.

Xander Amaro has been searching for home since he was a little boy. For him, a job at Nacho’s is an opportunity for just that — a chance at a normal life, to settle in at his abuelo’s, and to find the father who left him behind. But when both the restaurant and Xander’s immigrant status are threatened, he will do whatever it takes to protect his new found family and himself.

Together, Pen and Xander must navigate first love and discovering where they belong — both within their families and their fiercely loyal Chicanx community — in order to save the place they all call home.

I tried, and put aside twice, Ancillary Justice; it’s clearly not for me. The City We Became is another book that didn’t grab me despite all the good reviews. The other books sound tempting!

  2. ReadKnitSnark says:

Dana K. White’s Decluttering at the Speed of Life is a KDD for $2. Get it now! It’s not about organizing; it’s about decluttering.

To paraphrase Dana “All the organizing books are written by organized people. They never worked for me.” Ditto. They had interesting concepts and pretty pictures, and I never did anything but read them and buy more. Dana’s two decluttering questions get shit out of my life. I even got the audiobook for encouragement.

Dana is hilarious and entertaining, and she’s been there. And periodically, she declutters again. Because life.

  3. Darlynne says:

I’ve read the first three books and loved all of them for completely different reasons. Jemisin’s portrayal of New York’s boroughs is masterful; Leckie’s space opera is mind- and genre-bending. Neither is an uncomplicated read, but absolutely worth it if a reader straps in and goes for the ride. ACCIDENTALLY ENGAGED is a delight, everything I could want in a romance, including issues of trust, family and finding ourselves. Now to check out the fourth book.

  4. Gloriamarie Amalfitano says:

I wish I had a vocabulary large enough to describe how MUCH I LOVED “The City We Became.” For one thing, I am a huge fan of this author and even though I wince at the cost of her books, she is an auto-buy for me, regardless that the price tags are way over my budget.

BFF read this book and liked it, but didn’t rave over it as much as I. We think that is because she is So Cal born and bred whereas I am East Coast and spent much of my high school and college years trekking all over the 5 boroughs of NYC.

I can assure you, Jemsin gets the voices of the 5 boroughs right. She knows the entire city like the back of her hand. So in addition to her brilliant writing, she gets all the details correct.

One thing that is a huge pet peeve of mine is when an author decides to set a story in a community that I know well and the author has never been there and knows nothing of feel of the place or even the street names.

The Accidentally engaged Amazon link takes me to another book (Accidentally engaged in Vegas)

  6. Amanda says:

@Marja: Are you outside the US? There’s a frequent issue with misdirected links with readers outside the States.

  7. JenM says:

Accidentally Engaged was a wonderful surprise with a lovely cinnamon roll hero and so much foodieness that I was in a perpetual state of hunger while reading it. There were a few too many secrets being kept and a bit of a slapstick feel at the end when everything was revealed, but the chemistry and banter between Reena and Nadim was strong and sweet. One of my favorite romances so far this year.

  8. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Entangled’s Brazen line is having a huge sale today. Lots of 99-cent deals by writers such as Katee Robert, Tessa Bailey, Amy Andrews, Nina Crespo, and many more. At first glance, most appear to be older titles—but if you’ve got a tbr going back about six or seven years (and who doesn’t?), you might be able to pick up some books you’ve been wanting to read for a while.

  9. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Here’s a link—but check prices carefully because some books that cost more than 99-cents do show up.

  10. Marja says:

@Amanda, yup, that must be it. The links almost always are re-directed to Amazon UK (I’m in Europe, but not in the UK). I usually just chance the .co.uk to .com and it takes me to the right link, but not this time.
