  • Gentleman Jim

    Gentleman Jim by Mimi Matthews

RECOMMENDED: Gentleman Jim by Mimi Matthews is 99c! Lara wrote a Lightning Review for this one and gave it an A:

I love a good yarn (in all senses of the word) and this book delivers a belter. This is an historical romance that feels fresh, vibrant and made me sing the Good Book Noise.

From USA Today bestselling author Mimi Matthews comes a swashbuckling tale of Regency era romance and revenge.

    She couldn’t forget…

Wealthy squire’s daughter Margaret Honeywell was always meant to marry her neighbor, Frederick Burton-Smythe, but it’s bastard-born Nicholas Seaton who has her heart. Raised alongside her on her father’s estate, Nicholas is the rumored son of notorious highwayman Gentleman Jim. When Fred frames him for theft, Nicholas escapes into the night, vowing to find his legendary sire. But Nicholas never returns. A decade later, he’s long been presumed dead.

    He wouldn’t forgive…

After years spent on the continent, John Beresford, Viscount St. Clare has finally come home to England. Tall, blond, and dangerous, he’s on a mission to restore his family’s honor. If he can mete out a bit of revenge along the way, so much the better. But he hasn’t reckoned for Maggie Honeywell. She’s bold and beautiful—and entirely convinced he’s someone else.

As danger closes in, St. Clare is torn between love and vengeance. Will he sacrifice one to gain the other? Or with a little luck—and a lot of daring—will he find a way to have them both?

  • Instant Attraction

    Instant Attraction by Jill Shalvis

RECOMMENDED: Instant Attraction by Jill Shalvis is $2.99! Sarah has recommended this book countless times:

I love the heroine, the hero, the setting, the snowboarding – this is one of those books where, if you ask me about it, my eyes roll back in my head and I make zombie-esque Good Book Noise®.

Get Wild… And Then Get Wilder…

Accountant Katie Kramer is a quintessential good girl—working hard, recycling diligently, all the while trying to ignore the feeling that she doesn’t fit in anywhere. That’s all she wants. Well, that—and amazing sex, and the kind of daredevil escapade she can look back on when she’s crunching numbers in a dusty cubicle. Which explains why she just took a job in Wishful, California, working for Wilder Adventures and Expeditions. Waking up to find a magnificently built stranger towering over her bed—that part defies explanation…

After wandering the planet for months following a life-changing accident, Cameron Wilder has come back to the only home he knows. Under other circumstances, he might be thrilled to find a gorgeous woman sleeping in his cabin, but now, while he’ll risk his body taking clients on adrenaline-drenched excursions, his heart is off limits. Still, Katie’s killer smile triggers something deep in his gut… among other places. Showing her how exhilarating it can be to stop balancing her life as if it was a checkbook is the biggest rush he’s ever felt—and an adventure Katie’s wishing would never end.

  • The Frame-Up

The Frame-Up by Meghan Scott Molin

The Frame-Up by Meghan Scott Molin is 99c at Amazon! This is a quirky mystery with lots of nerdery and I love the bright colors of the cover. However, I gave this one a read and was overwhelmed by all the pop culture references being bandied about. The second book is also out and on sale.

By day she writes comic books. By night, she lives them.

MG Martin lives and breathes geek culture. She even works as a writer for the comic book company she idolized as a kid. But despite her love of hooded vigilantes, MG prefers her comics stay on the page.

But when someone in LA starts recreating crime scenes from her favorite comic book, MG is the LAPD’s best—and only—lead. She recognizes the golden arrow left at the scene as the calling card of her favorite comic book hero. The thing is…superheroes aren’t real. Are they?

When the too-handsome-for-his-own-good Detective Kildaire asks for her comic book expertise, MG is more than up for the adventure. Unfortunately, MG has a teeny little tendency to not follow rules. And her off-the-books sleuthing may land her in a world of trouble.

Because for every superhero, there is a supervillain. And the villain of her story may be closer than she thinks…

  • The Unidentified Redhead

The Unidentified Redhead by Alice Clayton

The Unidentified Redhead by Alice Clayton is $1.99! We were just talking about Clayton’s romances last week when Buns was on sale. This is one of her earlier books (can’t remember if this came before Wallbanger), but the series follows the same main characters for a few books. As someone in her early 30s, I really liked the older-than-romance-standard heroine.

When Grace Sheridan returns to Los Angeles to become a working actress, it’s a second shot at a life-long dream. With some help from her best-friend agent, will that dream become a reality—or at thirty-three, has Grace missed her chance at the big time? And when an unexpected sizzling romance with Jack Hamilton, the entertainment industry’s newest “it” boy, threatens to shine an uncomfortable spotlight on her life, how will that affect her career…and his?

Funny, borderline neurotic Grace is perfect in her imperfections, and the sexual chemistry between her and charming yet blissfully unaware Jack is off the charts. With laugh-out-loud dialogue and a super-steamy romance that will get your heart racing, sneaking around in L.A. and dodging the paparazzi has never been so fun.

  1. Annie Kate says:

Are Mimi Matthews’s books all closed-door? I seem to remember seeing that somewhere, and while it’s not a problem for me or anything, I just like to know that going in. I think it’s a setting of expectations thing. I wish there was a standardized romance novel heat-level rating system, like fanfiction has.

  2. Darlynne says:

As someone who doesn’t generally read historical romance, I quite liked GENTLEMAN JIM. I knew where it was going, but the ride was fun. Color me surprised.

  3. chacha1 says:

‘The Viscount and the Vicar’s Daughter’ is a bit steamier than the other Matthews titles I’ve read, but none of them are super graphic. Her writing has
    – almost want to say old-fashioned, but I mean it in a good way – a restrained quality to it. Reminds me of that moment in the movie ‘Age of Innocence’ when (was it Daniel Day-Lewis?) exposes Winona’s wrist – so sexy. 🙂 I liked ‘Gentleman Jim’ a lot.

  4. Kit says:

@Annie Kate one UK publisher did use symbols to depict the contents on the back cover (eg. Lips for romance, lacy underwear for sexy stuff etc) but I don’t think it caught on. Definitely could do with a rating system though.

  5. FashionablyEvil says:

I’ve read several of Mimi Matthews’ books and they’re all pretty closed-door (thought not unsexy—she writes really good chemistry and dialogue.) I really enjoyed Gentleman Jim which seems to be *slightly* steamier than some of her other stuff—I figured this out after some rather misleading Goodreads reviews which claimed it was *fans self* level of hotness and I think it may be compared to her other books! But definitely not in general.

Murderbot fans might like to know that Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory by Martha Wells can be read for free on the Tor.com site. This is a short story featuring Murderbot; she’s not narrating.

  7. Kareni says:

Above should say “it’s not narrating.”
