  • The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers

The Long Way to a Small, Angry Planet by Becky Chambers is $1.99! This scifi novel has been recommended and loved by many of my friends, and talked about highly in my book group. The book has some great queer representation, though readers remarked it’s more character driven than plot driven. And what a coincidence that it’s on sale as we just mentioned this in yesterday’s Whatcha Reading!

A rollicking space adventure with a lot of heart

When Rosemary Harper joins the crew of the Wayfarer, she isn’t expecting much. The patched-up ship has seen better days, but it offers her everything she could possibly want: a spot to call home, a chance to explore the far-off corners of the galaxy, and some distance from her past.

And nothing could be further from what she’s known than the crew of the Wayfarer.

From Sissix, the exotic reptilian pilot, to Kizzy and Jenks, the chatty engineers who keep the ship running, to the noble captain Ashby, life aboard is chaotic and crazy—exactly what Rosemary wants. That is until the crew is offered the job of a lifetime tunneling wormholes through space to a distant planet. Sure, they’ll earn enough money to live comfortably for years, but risking her life wasn’t part of the job description.

The journey through the galaxy is full of excitement, adventure, and mishaps for the Wayfarer team. And along the way, Rosemary comes to realize that a crew is a family, and that family isn’t necessarily the worst thing in the universe… as long as you actually like them.

  • Superfan

    Superfan by Sarina Bowen

Superfan by Sarina Bowen is 99c! I believe this is part of the Brooklyn Bruisers spinoff series and is the third book, with two famous characters. Definitely not my personal catnip but maybe it’s yours. Also, the hat on the model is bother me, as I can’t get a sense if it’s a baseball hat or more like a golf cap. Thoughts?

A new standalone novel in the Brooklyn Bruisers world!

Sometimes lady luck shakes your hand, and sometimes she smacks your face. Sometimes she does both on the same day.

Three years ago I met the most amazing girl in the world. We were both down on our luck. Then I got that call—the one that tells you to get your buns on a plane to go meet your destiny.

But the girl was left behind. I didn’t have her phone number, and she didn’t know my real name.

While I became a professional hockey player, she became a superstar, with platinum records and legions of fans. And a slick, music producer boyfriend who treated her badly.

But fate wasn’t done with us yet. When Delilah turns up at a hockey game, I can’t resist making contact. The internet swoons when I ask her out on a date.

She might not remember me. But her jerkface ex does. He’ll do anything to keep us apart.

Good thing athletes never give up. This time I’m playing for keeps.

  • Hot and Badgered

Hot and Badgered by Shelly Laurenston

Hot and Badgered by Shelly Laurenston is $1.99! This is the first book in the Honey Badger Chronicles. Sarah read this one and gave it a B grade:

Among my favorite things about Laurenston’s writing is how very affirming and inspiring and a whole lot of fun it is, because angry, fearless women make room for themselves, they get shit done, and they’re the heroines. More honey badgers, please.

It’s not every day that a beautiful naked woman falls out of the sky and lands face-first on grizzly shifter Berg Dunn’s hotel balcony. Definitely they don’t usually hop up and demand his best gun. Berg gives the lady a grizzly-sized t-shirt and his cell phone, too, just on style points. And then she’s gone, taking his XXXL heart with her. By the time he figures out she’s a honey badger shifter, it’s too late.

Honey badgers are survivors. Brutal, vicious, ill-tempered survivors. Or maybe Charlie Taylor-MacKilligan is just pissed that her useless father is trying to get them all killed again, and won’t even tell her how. Protecting her little sisters has always been her job, and she’s not about to let some pesky giant grizzly protection specialist with a network of every shifter in Manhattan get in her way. Wait. He’s trying to help? Why would he want to do that? He’s cute enough that she just might let him tag along—that is, if he can keep up . . .

  • The Asset

The Asset by Anna del Mar

The Asset by Anna del Mar is 99c! This is the first book in the Wounded Warrior series. Several reviewers warn that there’s some serious, triggering material, mainly in the characters’ backstories. But others say as del Mar’s debut romance, it’s a great read. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

Anna del Mar’s explosive, sexy debut novel in the Wounded Warrior series, perfect for fans of Lisa Marie Rice and Lora Leigh—the story of a woman desperate to escape her dangerous past and the navy SEAL who would lay down his life to save her.

Ash Hunter knows what it is to run. A SEAL gravely injured in Afghanistan, he’s gone AWOL from the military hospital. Physically and mentally scarred, he returns home to his grandmother’s isolated cottage—and finds a beautiful, haunted stranger inside.

    Like recognizes like.

Lia Stewart’s in hiding from the cartel she barely escaped alive, holed up in this small Rocky Mountain town. Surviving, but only just. Helping the wounded warrior on her doorstep is the right thing to do…it’s loving him that might get them both killed.

Soon, Ash realizes he’s not the only one tormented by the past. Pushing the limits of his broken body, testing the boundaries of her shattered soul, he’ll protect Lia until his last breath.

Hot and Badgered is my favorite of the three. I couldn’t resist a one-click on the Becky Chambers, despite having had it out from library at least twice without reading it.

  2. G. says:

I got the Sarina Bowen book–yay! Somehow I also managed to stumble upon Sierra Simone’s A Lesson in Thorns (for 0.98EUR). She also had a free short story collection (Once Upon a Dream) available to download. I’m in EU (duh)and use Play Books, but check your vendors 🙂

  3. Laurel says:

The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet is a great read. I read it last year during the height of COVID sadness, and it was just so good – kind of like how some people read the Murderbot series – just spending some time in a place that is not our present reality, with interesting and decent characters. I’ve read all the books in the series (they are loosely connected), and I can’t wait for the next one out soon.

  4. Escapeologist says:

I already started a reread of The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet after seeing it mentioned here yesterday. It’s more quiet and cozy than one might expect based on the cover and blurb – that is a very good thing in stressful times. So far in the first couple of chapters the new girl arrives on ship, meets various quirky crew members, chats with them, eats delicious meal, goes to sleep in cozy bunk. I don’t remember a lot of specific details from the last time I read it, been a few years – there may be a space battle or two and some sad backstory for a supporting character, other than that it’s warm and fuzzy and quietly thoughtful. There’s a lovely bit about the constant background noises of a space ship being comforting.

All Systems Red ivy Martha Wells$3.99 on Amazon US! I think the Murderbot books are often priced a lot higher than that, so I definitely grabbed it.

I think the hat is a hipster beanie and I say the hell with it.

  7. Lisa L says:

I’m a big Laurenston fan and just soooo impatient for Breaking Badger coming out in August. Sarah’s assessment is exactly why I like her writing. I’m probably going to do some rereads to tide me over. If anyone in the Bitchery has a good read-a-like suggestion, I would be deeply grateful.

  8. SusanK says:

Nikki Winter’s shifter books are similar to Laurenston’s books. The bear shifters series is lighter than the other series, because bears!

  9. Lisa L says:

Thank you kindly SusanK! I will check out da bears and the others too 😀
