  • Duke of Midnight

Duke of Midnight by Elizabeth Hoyt

The Duke of Midnight by Elizabeth Hoyt is $1.99! This is Maiden Lane book 6, and it has a 4.1-star average. This series in particular is a favorite here at the Pink Palace. I know both Elyse and I have really enjoyed these books. Though they can operate as standalones, I believe every three books or so starts a new major story arc. Correct me if I’m wrong!

    WHEN A MASKED MAN . . .

Twenty years ago Maximus Batten witnessed the brutal murders of his parents. Now the autocratic Duke of Wakefield, he spends his days ruling Parliament. But by night, disguised as the Ghost of St. Giles, he prowls the grim alleys of St. Giles, ever on the hunt for the murderer. One night he finds a fiery woman who meets him toe-to-toe-and won’t back down . . .

    MEETS HIS MATCH . . .

Artemis Greaves toils as a lady’s companion, but hiding beneath the plain brown serge of her dress is the heart of a huntress. When the Ghost of St. Giles rescues her from footpads, she recognizes a kindred spirit-and is intrigued. She’s even more intrigued when she realizes who exactly the notorious Ghost is by day . . .

    DESIRE IGNITES A DANGEROUS PASSION

Artemis makes a bold move: she demands that Maximus use his influence to free her imprisoned brother-or she will expose him as the Ghost. But blackmailing a powerful duke isn’t without risks. Now that she has the tiger by the tail, can she withstand his ire-or the temptation of his embrace?

  • Uprooted

    Uprooted by Naomi Novik

RECOMMENDED: Uprooted by Naomi Novik is $2.99! A lot of people have recommended this book and Novik’s writing, but some readers did mention on Goodreads that the book is a bit slow at times. Do you love Novik’s writing? What did you think of this one? This might be left over from yesterday’s KDDs. I’m doing inventory at the bookstore this week, so I’m not on my usual BoS schedule.

“Our Dragon doesn’t eat the girls he takes, no matter what stories they tell outside our valley. We hear them sometimes, from travelers passing through. They talk as though we were doing human sacrifice, and he were a real dragon. Of course that’s not true: he may be a wizard and immortal, but he’s still a man, and our fathers would band together and kill him if he wanted to eat one of us every ten years. He protects us against the Wood, and we’re grateful, but not that grateful.”

Agnieszka loves her valley home, her quiet village, the forests and the bright shining river. But the corrupted Wood stands on the border, full of malevolent power, and its shadow lies over her life.

Her people rely on the cold, driven wizard known only as the Dragon to keep its powers at bay. But he demands a terrible price for his help: one young woman handed over to serve him for ten years, a fate almost as terrible as falling to the Wood.

The next choosing is fast approaching, and Agnieszka is afraid. She knows—everyone knows—that the Dragon will take Kasia: beautiful, graceful, brave Kasia, all the things Agnieszka isn’t, and her dearest friend in the world. And there is no way to save her.

But Agnieszka fears the wrong things. For when the Dragon comes, it is not Kasia he will choose.

  • The Unyielding

    The Unyielding by Shelly Laurenston

RECOMMENDEDThe Unyielding by Shelly Laurenston is $1.99! This is the third book in the Call of Crows series, which Sarah absolutely loves. Sarah gave this book a B:

This series, and each book within it, makes me feel better whenever I’m stressed or feeling powerless and overwhelmed. It acknowledges the rage inherent in feeling powerless, and transforms that rage into useful, powerful action. It’s the best kind of catharsis.

Stieg Engstrom, Angriest Viking Ever, has got big problems. The human Viking Clans of earth are in danger of being obliterated—along with the rest of the world—and the only one who may be able to save them is a super pain-in-the-ass Crow. Most people annoy Stieg, but this is the one woman he really can’t stand…

Erin Amsel loves being a Crow! Why wouldn’t she when the other Viking Clans are so hilariously arrogant and humorless? She’s not about to let all that come to an end! She just didn’t expect to be shoulder to shoulder in battle with Stieg. Then again, he’s so easy to torment—and also kind of cute.

With the future of the world riding on them, Stieg knows he’ll have to put aside his desperate need to kiss the smirk right off Erin’s face. Wait. What? He didn’t mean that—did he? No! They have one goal: To conquer the idiots. Because nothing bugs Stieg more than when idiots win. If only he can keep himself from suddenly acting like one….

  • The Prince of Midnight

The Prince of Midnight by Laura Kinsale

The Prince of Midnight by Laura Kinsale is $1.99! This historical romance has some Beauty and the Beast elements. Readers love the angsty, broody hero, while others thought there would be more action to the story. If you’ve read this one, tell us what you thought about it in the comments! It also has a 3.7-star rating on Goodreads.

He was once a legendary highwayman. Now he’s a recluse in a ruined French castle, with only a half-wild wolf for a companion.

When Lady Leigh Strachan comes looking for a man to aid in her revenge, she is disillusioned to find that the famed Prince of Midnight could not help even if he cared to—which he does not.

    S. T. Maitland wants nothing to do with his legend, or with this fierce, beautiful, broken woman . . . until the old thrill of living on the cutting edge of danger begins to rise in his blood again.

Does the ‘Duke of Midnight’ scenario sound like Batman, or is it just me? 🙂

  2. Laurel says:

I highly recommend The Unyielding, but you really need to read the two previous books first. I wish there were more books in this series – it is so good. Shelly Laurentston tends to be hit or miss for me, but this series was a big hit.

  3. Lara says:

Raven Marked by Faith Hunter (book 4 of the Jane Yellowrock urban fantasy series) is $1.99 today according to the author’s feed. Not a good jumping-into point for the series, but if you like vampires and badass vampire hunters and an extremely-slow-but-HOT-burn romance, I recommend the series.

  4. Christi says:

@chacha1, Duke of Midnight is definitely Batman, or maybe Batduke.

It’s in the middle of an arc, but can be easily read as a standalone if I remember correctly. Duke of Midnight is one of my favorites of the series.

  5. MirandaB says:

Uprooted is my favorite Novik. It was my favorite book of the year a couple of years ago and I just felt joy while reading it.

  6. msb says:

I love Uprooted. I didn’t find it slow, but struggled with the horror elements. Worth the struggle, though. A wonderful theme is loving one’s work, and doing it one’s own way. The eastern European background was new and interesting.

  7. Amanda says:

Prince of Midnight is a comfort read forever!

  8. Emily says:

I loved Uprooted – I’ve been one-clicking Novik ever since

  9. Pat says:

When Gods Die: A Sebastian St. Cyr Mystery #2 by C.S. Harris is $1.99 at Amazon and BN.

  10. Janet says:

Hmmm. When I click through on the Unyielding I am not getting a sale price at Amazon.

  11. Heather M says:

Batduke – ahem, I mean, Duke of Midnight – was the first romance ever I read as an adult. I needed a book at the airport and it was the only thing that looked remotely decent and then I cracked it open and realized, wait a sec, this is Batman. Sold. And the rest is history, I guess.

Uprooted is one of my favorite books of all time. Beautiful prose, great story.

  12. Tina says:

I love Hoyt’s writing and the Maiden Lane series, but I had major issues with the hero of Duke of Midnight. In a previous book, he tries to coerce his sister, Hero, into marrying a man that hit her in the face. Literally while the bruise is still on her face! On top of that, in Duke of Midnight, he spends the whole time telling Artemis that he can’t marry her while simultaneously trying to curtail her independence, so I wouldn’t say that his book is even a redemption arc for his character. I read this book four years ago and I still get steamed up thinking about how awful Maximus was to the women in his life.

I will say that I did love the heroine, Artemis, and I found her dedication to freeing her brother to be a wonderful aspect of the book. Their sibling relationship was superb.

My rant about Duke of Midnight aside, the Maiden Lane series overall is wonderful! I just like to pretend that this particular book in the series does not exist lol

  13. Karen D says:

Midnight is getting a little crowded with both a prince and a duke. Anyone seen the Marquess of Twilight or the Earl of Evening?

  14. LMC says:

I also love Duke of Midnight. I like how Artemis, is smart and sensible, but really considers what it would be to a mistress, to be a companion for a spoiled young lady, to miss nice things. I think a lot of the novel is allowing Artemis and Maximus who they really are and what they really want. I find the “Ghost of St. Giles” plot thread that bind most of the novel the least interesting part. Swoony ending.

  15. Jerrica says:

@Janet The Unleashing (first book in the Call Of Crows series) is $1.99 or free with Kindle Unlimited, but nope…you’re right….the third book is not on sale

  16. Carole says:

The Maiden Lane Series is also one of my favourites and Duke of Midnight is my favourite book in the series. About to have dental surgery, so think I will lose myself in the series again as I recuperate. Just looked at my Goodreads entry and it would qualify as a Squee Review as follows:

Max saw that beneath her brown wren camouflage that Artemis was bright, lovely, droll, persistent, courageous, compassionate, etc…Love that with the rest of the world he is the serious, sober, staid and commanding Duke of Wakefield, but in his private moments with Artemis, he becomes fanciful, romantic and very poetic; his true self that he subsumed in his guilt and childhood wound.

Some of my favourite parts of the book are Artemis falling in love with, and being in love with Max the Man, not his Title, and she sees who he truly is in his affectionate, loving connection with his sister Phoebe. Her unconditional love and support of her twin brother was also heartwarming.

Max’s adorably wry and affectionate relationship with his valet Craven was one of the many delights in the book.

I really liked how gentle and patient the ‘losing her V Card’ love scene was. Compared to some other historical romances it felt more true-to-life, and it was so romantic that Max was disappointed that he did not get to be tender with Artemis the morning after and have breakfast together…lots of little inserts of how sentimental and romantic Max really is, when he is not binding himself with his perceived duty. Wish I could give it more than 5 Stars. Loved It – a very special story.
