When I started this book, I was expecting a jam-packed, over-the top fantasy with a lot of snark and heart. And House of Earth and Blood did deliver that, even if there were some missteps in execution. If you’ve enjoyed Maas’ other books, and if you can handle all the violence and slavery and slut-shaming, it’s worth it to push through the awkward beginning and the dragging bits in the middle for big payoff at the end.
Starling House by Alix E. Harrow is $2.99! Sarah and I mentioned this in Hide Your Wallet last October. I think I wound up grabbing it in audio, but am notoriously bad at whittling down my audiobook library.
RECOMMENDED: Wild Rain by Beverly Jenkins is $1.99! Catherine wrote a Lightning Review for this one and gave it a B+:
I enjoyed this story a lot. It contains many of the elements that feel like a traditional Western to me – scenes of blizzards and horse-breaking, confrontations in the local saloon, slick shysters from out East come to take advantage of the locals – but the central characters buck the stereotypes in numerous ways.
Storm Echo by Nalini Singh is $1.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and book six in the Psy Changeling Trinity series. I think you could fill in the blanks and read it as a standalone, but it’s probably a richer experience to read the entire series in order.
The World We Make by N.K. Jemisin is $3.99! This is book two in the Great Cities series and came at the beginning of November. Book one has been recommended (and featured on sale) many times and this one was mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet.
Red, White and Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston is $2.99! This one is probably on sale because of the recent exciting movie news and I know many of you loved this one. Aarya gave this one a C- because she found the political world building too much of a distraction.
My Heart is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones is $2.99! Not sure if this is a leftover Kindle Daily Deal from yesterday. This was a big release last year and the library holds still might be rather long. Did you read this one?
RECOMMENDED: Written in the Stars by Alexandria Bellefleur is $1.99! Though the book copy mentions both Pride & Prejudice and Bridget Jones’s Diary, though our reviewers mention it’s more like the former than the latter. Aarya and Tara reviewed this one together and gave it an A-:
