The World We Make

The World We Make by N.K. Jemisin is $3.99! This is book two in the Great Cities series and came at the beginning of November. Book one has been recommended (and featured on sale) many times and this one was mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet.
Three-time Hugo Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author N.K. Jemisin crafts “a glorious fantasy” (Neil Gaiman) — a story of culture, identity, magic, and myths in contemporary New York City, in the final book of the Great Cities Duology.
Every great city has a soul. A human avatar that embodies their city’s heart and wields its magic. New York? She’s got six.
But all is not well in the city that never sleeps. Though Brooklyn, Manny, Bronca, Venezia, Padmini, and Neek have temporarily managed to stop the Woman in White from invading–and destroying the entire universe in the process–the mysterious capital “E” Enemy has more subtle powers at her disposal. A new candidate for mayor wielding the populist rhetoric of gentrification, xenophobia, and “law and order” may have what it takes to change the very nature of New York itself and take it down from the inside. In order to defeat him, and the Enemy who holds his purse strings, the avatars will have to join together with the other Great Cities of the world in order to bring her down for good and protect their world from complete destruction.

Too Good to Be Real by Melonie Johnson is $2.99! This is a standalone contemporary romance. The heroine is a writer who checks out a resort designed to help people live out their rom-com fantasies. Not quite sure what that means!
She plans to prove there’s a dozen reasons why life isn’t like a romantic comedy, only to discover the one reason it is…
While her friends wish for meet cutes worthy of their favorite rom-coms, Julia is ready to give up on love. Swiping right has replaced getting swept off your feet and good old-fashioned romance has become, well, old-fashioned.
A writer for a popular website, love becomes the last thing on her mind when impending layoffs threaten her job. As Julia searches for the ultimate pitch to impress her boss, she stumbles upon a resort offering guests a chance to live out their romantic comedy dreams. Real life dating is so bleak, who wouldn’t want to spend a week in a fantasy rom-com world with your best friends?
At the resort, Julia literally falls into a not-quite-meet-cute involving an aggressive seagull and an adorably awkward guy named Luke who is also participating in the rom-com experience. Julia hides the fact she is there to do a story, but Luke harbors a few secrets of his own. Among further encounters with thieving seagulls, a gaggle of corgis, kisses in the rain, and even a karaoke serenade, their feelings deepen quickly. But could their love be real when they haven’t been honest about their true identities? Once the fantasy is over, can they have a relationship in the real world?

RECOMMENDED: His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik is $3.99! I love the new covers! Carrie mentioned she started reading this in a previous Whatcha Reading and there were many comments about how great this book is. We also have an early review of this book by Candy, who says it’s “utterly goddamn awesome.”
Aerial combat brings a thrilling new dimension to the Napoleonic Wars as valiant warriors ride mighty fighting dragons, bred for size or speed. When HMS Reliant captures a French frigate and seizes the precious cargo, an unhatched dragon egg, fate sweeps Captain Will Laurence from his seafaring life into an uncertain future – and an unexpected kinship with a most extraordinary creature.
Thrust into the rarified world of the Aerial Corps as master of the dragon Temeraire, he will face a crash course in the daring tactics of airborne battle. For as France’s own dragon-borne forces rally to breach British soil in Bonaparte’s boldest gambit, Laurence and Temeraire must soar into their own baptism of fire.

To Kiss a Thief by Susanna Craig is $1.99! This was featured in August 2016 Hide You Wallet post. Redheadedgirl said, “Second chance, arranged marriage, secrets and lies, basically full of catnips. All the catnips.” But reviews on Goodreads that the hero is a bit undeserving of the heroine. The next book in the series is on sale for 99c as well!
Can a marriage made for money blossom into something more?

Alas, “The World We Make” does not seem to be on sale at Apple. Drat.
“His Majesty’s Dragon” is really good. It’s the first in a series and my favorite. I love the new cover, too.
Pack of Lies, book 1 in Charlie Adhara’s new Monster Hunt series is a Kindle Daily Deal for $1.99. I enjoyed her Big Bad Wolf series (m/m wolf shifter/human couple who work for law enforcement branch that deals with crimes involving wolf shifters). The description for the new series says it’s another wolf/human couple.
Listen to Candy. She knows what she’s talking about. I thought no dragon could compete with golden Ramoth & the mighty bronze, Mnementh in my heart, but then Temeraire came along and snuggled up beside them. HIS MAJESTY’S DRAGON is the start of an epic adventure. So many thumbs up.
Jemisin and Novik on the same list at the same time. This IS my lucky day.
I read The World We Make by N.K. Jemisin
The World We Make by N.K. Jemisin immediately after it came out. It is fantastic. I gave it 5 stars and highly recommend it.
Another vote for Temeraire!
Contract Season by Cait Nary received a B+ from Lara. The book is a Kindle deal today at $1.99 for US Kindle readers.
I had specific issues with To Kiss A Thief in that the hero went to the West Indies to discover The Horror of Slavery and he did and there are no black characters–it just made him a better person to see
and by then he had already worked on the family’s sugar plantation.
