  • Huntress

    Huntress by Malinda Lo

RECOMMENDED: Huntress by Malinda Lo is $1.99! Carrie reviewed this one and gave it a B+, but wouldn’t recommend it for romance readers necessarily:

I recommend this for people looking for inclusive fantasy that feels at once fresh and traditional within multiple traditions.

Nature is out of balance in the human world. The sun hasn’t shone in years, and crops are failing. Worse yet, strange and hostile creatures have begun to appear. The people’s survival hangs in the balance.

To solve the crisis, the oracle stones are cast, and Kaede and Taisin, two seventeen-year-old girls, are picked to go on a dangerous and unheard-of journey to Tanlili, the city of the Fairy Queen. Taisin is a sage, thrumming with magic, and Kaede is of the earth, without a speck of the otherworldly. And yet the two girls’ destinies are drawn together during the mission. As members of their party succumb to unearthly attacks and fairy tricks, the two come to rely on each other and even begin to fall in love. But the Kingdom needs only one huntress to save it, and what it takes could tear Kaede and Taisin apart forever.

The exciting adventure prequel to Malinda Lo’s highly acclaimed novel Ash is overflowing with lush Chinese influences and details inspired by the I Ching, and is filled with action and romance.

  • Trailer Park Fae

Trailer Park Fae by Lilith Saintcrow

Trailer Park Fae by Lilith Saintcrow is 99c! This is an urban fantasy book where the hero, who’s half fae, must return home to sort out some issues. Many complaints come from the fact that readers were expecting a certain story: a fun, ass-kicking urban fantasy adventured. However, it turned out to be rather dark. Have you read this one?

New York Times bestselling author Lilith Saintcrow returns to dark fantasy with a new series where the fairy world inhabits diners, dive bars and trailer parks.

Jeremy Gallow is just another construction worker, and that’s the way he likes it. He’s left his past behind, but some things cannot be erased. Like the tattoos on his arms that transform into a weapon, or that he was once closer to the Queen of Summer than any half-human should be. Now the half-sidhe all in Summer once feared is dragged back into the world of enchantment, danger, and fickle fae – by a woman who looks uncannily like his dead wife. Her name is Robin, and her secrets are more than enough to get them both killed. A plague has come, the fullborn-fae are dying, and the dark answer to Summer’s Court is breaking loose.

Be afraid, for Unwinter is riding…

  • Hard Wood

    Hard Wood by Lauren Blakely

Hard Wood by Lauren Blakely is $99c! It’s available elsewhere, but not on sale. This is a contemporary romantic comedy with a hero who owns a cat. Heck yeah. This is part of the Big Rock series, all of which (I believe) are told from the heroes’ POV. It worked for some readers, but not others. Which camp are you in?

From #1 NYT Bestselling author Lauren Blakely comes a hot & hilarious new romantic comedy AND the final novel in her beloved Big Rock series of standalone romances…

Women often say a good man is hard to find. And a hard man is even better.

That’s why I’m quite a catch– good, hard, loaded, and wait for it…I’m ready to settle down too. But the woman I want to pitch my tent with lives clear across the country. Neither of us wants to get lost in those woods. All I have to do is resist her for the week she’s in town.

I try. I swear I try. But yeah, that doesn’t work out.

And after one fantastic night with my good friend Mia, I’m ready to give her years of nights under the stars. What’s a few thousand miles when love’s involved? But there’s a hitch in my plans — she just hired my adventure tour company. If there’s one thing I’m committed to, it’s running a squeaky clean business. Number one on my list of iron-clad rules?

    Don’t screw your customers.

But what’s a guy to do when she’s so hard to resist? How hard can it be to keep our hands off each other for a quick group tour down the hills and over the trails? I’m about to find out, and I have a feeling I’m going to need a new badge of honor because things are about to get very hard in the woods.

  • On the Line

On the Line by Victoria Denault

On the Line by Victoria Denault is 99c! This sports romance is the fifth book in The Hometown Players series and has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads. Though it can be read as a standalone, many readers of series were really anticipating this hero’s book.

He had total control of his game–until she changed all the rules . . .

As one of the best players in the NHL and the “golden boy” of the league, Avery Westwood knows he has to keep his cool–on and off the ice. His whole life is a carefully constructed image of perfection for the media and his brand sponsors. Of course, that means he can never let his true feelings show. But when it comes to the sexy sister of his former teammate, Avery might be willing to make an exception . . . even if it means breaking all his own rules.

As far as Stephanie Deveau is concerned, having a thing for Avery is the equivalent of psychological napalm. Très bad idea. Then he moves in next door, all sexy smiles and a deliciously hot body that she can’t resist. Something’s happening between them–it’s intense, a little (a lot) out of control, and real. Only Avery doesn’t know everything about Stephanie’s past. And the one exception to his rule might just be the one girl who could destroy his career.

  1. Carrie G says:

I’d heard such good things about Lauren Blakely and tried the first of the Big Rock series titles…Big Rock. The characters were nice and the sex hot, but the entire raison d’etre for the story is so absurd it ruined it for me. There is no way a famous NYC jewelry store chain up for sale would have to bend over backwards to cater to one obnoxious buyer. Other than that, it’s a pretty typical friends to lovers story with nice people and some humor.

So, my question, does anyone have another book by Blakely they would recommend? Is this one on sale good?

  2. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@CarrieG: I really enjoyed ONE NIGHT ONLY, an M/F/M ménage involving a woman, her bodyguard, and his best friend, a rock star. I liked it so much, I can’t wait for the next couple of books—one featuring the heroine’s sister, the other featuring the rock star and HIS bodyguard.

I will say that I’ve read that Blakely’s more recent output seems written for audio market (heavy on dialogue, not so much on description), so that reading them is perhaps not the best way to enjoy them. I read ONE NIGHT ONLY and enjoyed it (I’m not a big audiobook fan), but that her books often work better in audio might be something to keep in mind.

  3. Darlynne says:

I loved TRAILER PARK FAE precisely because it was dark; it does end on a cliffhanger, iirc. Mood: apparently 2020 not so different from 2015 when I read the book. The second, ROADSIDE MAGIC, is in my TBR.

  4. Carrie G says:

@DiscoDollyDeb, thanks for the recommendation. I’ll look into it. I actually did listen to Big Rock on audio. It was the ridiculous set up that threw me out of the story. Other than that, it was a good friends-to-lovers story, but not original or unique. I do want to try again because I know she’s popular. She still has quitea few books on Audible Escape, so I am going to try her while I can.

  5. Lisa F says:

Oh, these all sound like fun!
