  • Every Heart a Doorway

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire is $2.99! I love this series. The writing is so beautiful and I would happily send 300+ pages in the world McGuire has created. However, I will warn that these books have a haunting sadness to them and as romance readers, the HEAs we love aren’t the HEAs the characters want. (If that makes any sense without spoiling.)

Eleanor West’s Home for Wayward Children
    No Solicitations
    No Visitors
    No Quests

Children have always disappeared under the right conditions; slipping through the shadows under a bed or at the back of a wardrobe, tumbling down rabbit holes and into old wells, and emerging somewhere… else.

But magical lands have little need for used-up miracle children.

Nancy tumbled once, but now she’s back. The things she’s experienced… they change a person. The children under Miss West’s care understand all too well. And each of them is seeking a way back to their own fantasy world.

But Nancy’s arrival marks a change at the Home. There’s a darkness just around each corner, and when tragedy strikes, it’s up to Nancy and her new-found schoolmates to get to the heart of the matter.

    No matter the cost.

  • The Twisted Ones

The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher

The Twisted Ones by T. Kingfisher is $1.99! Kingfisher is the pen name of Ursula Vernon and I absolutely loved this creepy horror novel about a young woman and her dog cleaning out a hoarded house. I also want everyone to rest easy: the dog lives.

When a young woman clears out her deceased grandmother’s home in rural North Carolina, she finds long-hidden secrets about a strange colony of beings in the woods.

When Mouse’s dad asks her to clean out her dead grandmother’s house, she says yes. After all, how bad could it be?

Answer: pretty bad. Grandma was a hoarder, and her house is stuffed with useless rubbish. That would be horrific enough, but there’s more—Mouse stumbles across her step-grandfather’s journal, which at first seems to be filled with nonsensical rants…until Mouse encounters some of the terrifying things he described for herself.

Alone in the woods with her dog, Mouse finds herself face to face with a series of impossible terrors—because sometimes the things that go bump in the night are real, and they’re looking for you. And if she doesn’t face them head on, she might not survive to tell the tale.

From Hugo Award–winning author Ursula Vernon, writing as T. Kingfisher.

  • How to Love a Duke in Ten Days

How to Love a Duke in Ten Days by Kerrigan Byrne

How to Love a Duke in Ten Days by Kerrigan Byrne is $1.99! I read this and want to warn that the book starts with a graphic rape scene and the hero is a huge asshole. However, I did pull a Bad Decisions Book Club while reading this one, but did I enjoy it? Who knows!

These men are dark, bold, and brave. And there is only one woman who can bring them to their knees…

Famed and brilliant, Lady Alexandra Lane has always known how to look out for to herself. But nobody would ever expect that she has darkness in her past—one that she pays a blackmailer to keep buried. Now, with her family nearing bankruptcy, Alexandra strikes upon a solution: Get married to one of the empire’s most wealthy eligible bachelors. Even if he does have the reputation of a devil.

    LOVE TAKES NO PRISONERS

Piers Gedrick Atherton, the Duke of Redmayne, is seeking revenge and the first step is securing a bride. Winning a lady’s hand is not so easy, however, for a man known as the Terror of Torcliff. Then, Alexandra enters his life like a bolt of lightning. When she proposes marriage, Piers knows that, like him, trouble haunts her footsteps. But her gentleness, sharp wit, independent nature, and incredible beauty awakens every fierce desire within him. He will do whatever it takes to keep her safe in his arms.

  • Against the Wild

Against the Wild by Kat Martin

Against the Wild by Kat Martin is 99c at Amazon! This is the first book in Martin’s Brodies of Alaska and is a romantic suspense set in (obviously) Alaska. The book seems rather intense based on the description. Some readers expressed that they enjoyed the first half of the book more than the second half, though many thought the setting was perfect for the suspenseful plot.

Alaska: Where the men are as bold and untamed as America’s last wilderness…

It’s been three years since Lane Bishop tragically lost her fiancé, and she’s finally ready to risk her heart on someone else. The hot look in Dylan Brodie’s eyes says he’s going to be that man.

But when Lane flies to the remote 1930s fishing lodge to help him renovate, she discovers a little girl who won’t speak, eerie legends and strange sounds in the night. And when she investigates the history of the lodge, she uncovers a legacy of injustice and murder.

As danger stalks his daughter and the woman he is coming to love, Dylan must risk everything to uncover the shocking truth.

I’ve mentioned these a couple of times over the last few dats, but if Ellis Peters’s Cadfael medieval mysteries are your jam, check Kindle’s Daily Deals every day because there’s been at least one Cadfael book on sale every day. Perhaps the entire series is being KDD’d. The prices I’ve seen have been between $1.99 and $3.99.

  2. Carrie G says:

I’ve read Every Heart a Doorway, and it is compellingly written and completely engrossing. For me, it was also disturbing. McGuire writes horror under the pen name Mira Grant, and this book skates very close to that genre, too close for me to continue with the series. However, that’s just my personal tastes, and I especially don’t do well with mixing horror and children. However the world building and writing here are both wonderful. My husband has read more of the series and loves them, but says a couple could be classified as horror stories.

Twisted Ones was excellent, and I can’t wait for the sequel in October!

Loved the Twisted Ones! Still trying to figure out HOW Ursula Vernon wrote a jump scare into a book, and I can’t wait for the next one.

Tatterhood and Other Tales is $1.99 today!

If you know a kid, or have been a kid, get this book. Tatterhood is the standout story. I don’t know how many times I read it to my kids. My son & daughter (both cis-gender,) spent many happy hours as children rampaging around the house with wooden spoons, whacking imaginary trolls.

  7. Tam says:

I loved The Twisted Ones. It was funny, wry, engaging, and it also kept me up at night with the screaming heebie-jeebies. (For anyone wondering, she makes it super-clear right from the start that the dog survives, which I personally always appreciate from horror writers.)

  8. Gail says:

Oh no! I insta purchased “Twisted Ones” and now I see it’s a cliff hanger… say it ain’t so!

  9. EM says:

I adore the Wayward Children series! Some stories are more macabre than others, it depends on where each is set. But I loved, loved, loved the twisted fairytale/adventure feel and the way some character traits are explained. I’d go into more detail but don’t want to spoil anything

  10. Ren Benton says:

@Gail: It’s not at all a cliffhanger. It is a complete story as is.
