Help A Bitch Out

HaBO: Pineapple Plantation, Yikes!

This HaBO comes from Maria, who is hoping to find this older Mills & Boon title:

This was one of my mother’s Mills & Boon novels. I read it in the 90s, but she had mostly second hand books so it may have been published earlier.

Heroine goes to work in an island, either Hawaii or nearby. Hero owns a pineapple plantation. I’m pretty sure she works for him in on his property, maybe as a secretary. I remember an open four-wheel-drive, her feeling hot when she arrived, wearing shorts. She gets used to the weather and beautiful balmy evenings. Their love becomes apparent during a tropical thunderstorm where she was in some apparent danger.

So few details, but the feeling of that storm has stuck with me, 25-30 years later… please help me revisit that moment!

Can we find this one?

it might be the Janet Dailey set in Hawaii, part of her 50 states series

  2. denise says:

The Janet Daily Americana series was earlier than the 90s. Her Kona Winds was re-released a few times.

  3. Susanna says:

OP also said it was second-hand in the 90s, though.

  4. LML says:

Author Violet Winspear? Among the first romance novels I read, I thought her stories were more about location than, you know, plot.

  5. Susan says:

@LML: I think you’re on to something. While I don’t think I’ve read this particular book, it sure does have a Winspear-y vibe (based on the zillions of Harlequins I read in the 70s/80s).

  6. Ellie M says:

Nora Roberts “Island of Flowers” maybe? It’s been years since I’ve read it, but the heroine travels to Hawaii and the hero is her father’s business partner. I can’t remember a whole lot more about it.

    Thanks all.

I’m a bit torn, Kona Winds by Janet Daily was on the money for my pineapple plantation. It’s definitely one that I have read, but it is missing some of my key features: the hot sweaty ride and the big storm. So, maybe I have blended two books into one in my memory, or perhaps my book is still out there.

It’s not Nora Roberts Island of Flowers, I’ll do some more research on Violet Winspear and let you know how I go.

  8. Lisa F says:

Janet Louise Robards had several Old Skool romances that took place in a Hawaiian setting, but I remember them being significantly more rapey/racist than Maria’s request, though.

  9. Maria says:

    More help required please 🙂

I bought Kona Winds by Janet Daily just to be sure, it’s very Hawaiian but unfortunately not my lost book. The book I am seeking definitely has a storm where herione was in danger (but survived nonetheless) that triggered Hero’s love declaration.

I’ve also read the back cover description of each Violet Winspear and Janet Louise Roberts romance, plus Karen Robards (just in case) but still no matches. As a spin-off I have some new historical romances to read 🙂

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, any further ideas are welcome!

There are three older category romances in a set called Destination Romance Box Set by Barbara McMahon. It appears they were originally published in the 90s, and one has pineapples and a storm.
