  • All Systems Red

All Systems Red by Martha Wells

RECOMMENDED: All Systems Red by Martha Wells is $1.99! I think everyone at SBTB HQ who has read these books has absolutely loved them, myself included. Tor recently had all four novellas for free through their newsletter, but if you missed those, $1.99 is not a bad entry fee.

“As a heartless killing machine, I was a complete failure.”

In a corporate-dominated spacefaring future, planetary missions must be approved and supplied by the Company. Exploratory teams are accompanied by Company-supplied security androids, for their own safety.

But in a society where contracts are awarded to the lowest bidder, safety isn’t a primary concern.

On a distant planet, a team of scientists are conducting surface tests, shadowed by their Company-supplied ‘droid — a self-aware SecUnit that has hacked its own governor module, and refers to itself (though never out loud) as “Murderbot.” Scornful of humans, all it really wants is to be left alone long enough to figure out who it is.

But when a neighboring mission goes dark, it’s up to the scientists and their Murderbot to get to the truth.

  • Thorn

    Thorn by Anna Burke

Thorn by Anna Burke is $2.99 at Amazon! This is a lesbian romance retelling of Beauty and the Beast Hello! Tara recommended it in our Slack and Maya picked it up and mentioned it in Saturday’s Whatcha Reading. F/F romances seem to rarely go on sale, so grab this one while you can. Burke’s other title, Nottingham, which Tara reviewed is also on sale!

On a cold day deep in the heart of winter, Rowan’s father returns from an ill-fated hunting trip bearing a single, white rose. The rose is followed by the Huntress, a figure out of legend. Tall, cruel, and achingly beautiful, she brings Rowan back with her to a mountain fastness populated solely by the creatures of the hunt. Rowan, who once scorned the villagers for their superstitions, now finds herself at the heart of a curse with roots as deep as the mountains, ruled by an old magic that is as insidious as the touch of the winter rose. Torn between her family loyalties, her guilty relief at escaping her betrothal to the charming but arrogant Avery Lockland, and her complicated feelings for the Huntress, Rowan must find a way to break the curse before it destroys everything she loves. There is only one problem—if she can find a way to lift the curse, she will have to return to the life she left behind. And the only thing more unbearable than endless winter is facing a lifetime of springs without the Huntress.

  • Edge of Glory

Edge of Glory by Rachel Spangler

RECOMMENDED: Edge of Glory by Rachel Spangler is $2.99! Tara reviewed this one and gave it a Squee grade. Her review inspired Sarah to pick it up:

Literally everything about it worked for me and it’s officially one of my favourite books of 2017.

As Olympic snowboarder Corey LaCroix and skier Elise Brandies ride the razor’s edge between victory and defeat on the slopes, they also face a heat neither of them is prepared for in their safe worlds of snow and ice. The stakes become steeper than any mountain either of them will ever face when legacies and hearts collide at breakneck speed.

  • Intercepted

    Intercepted by Alexa Martin

Intercepted by Alexa Martin is $1.99! This sports romance is the first book the Playbook series and was her debut romance. Readers seemed to love Martin’s voice and writing style, but wish the pacing were a bit better in this one. There’s also some adaptation news of it being made into a TV show!

Marlee thought she scored the man of her dreams only to be scorched by a bad breakup. But there’s a new player on the horizon, and he’s in a league of his own…

Marlee Harper is the perfect girlfriend. She’s definitely had enough practice by dating her NFL-star boyfriend for the last ten years. But when she discovers he has been tackling other women on the sly, she vows to never date an athlete again. There’s just one problem: Gavin Pope, the new hotshot quarterback and a fling from the past, has Marlee in his sights.

Gavin fights to show Marlee he’s nothing like her ex. Unfortunately, not everyone is ready to let her escape her past. The team’s wives, who never led the welcome wagon, are not happy with Marlee’s return. They have only one thing on their minds: taking her down. But when the gossip makes Marlee public enemy number one, she worries about more than just her reputation.

Between their own fumbles and the wicked wives, it will take a Hail Mary for Marlee and Gavin’s relationship to survive the season.

  1. Leigh Kramer says:

Thorn is excellent! It’s among my favorite Beauty and the Beast retellings.

  2. Emily B says:

I thought Intercepted was fun, but there is definitely some “not like the other women” characterization that bugged me a bit, and the hero didn’t do nearly enough groveling to make up for his level of screw up at the end. I read the second one in this series and it didn’t really work for me, and I have the third sitting on my Kindle but haven’t gotten around to it.

  3. Msb says:

Many thanks – got Murderbot no. 1 thanks to your publicizing the sale!

  4. Ry says:

The most recent Murderbot book came out today and it was *chef kiss*. I love the character so much. Read them all.
