  • The Widow

    The Widow by Fiona Barton

The Widow by Fiona Barton is $1.99! This is a thriller that Elyse really enjoyed! It earned an A grade as a Lightning Review:

I don’t want to say much more about this book because it will ruin it–that’s why I opted for a lightning review even though I could talk about the The Widow for hours. I want every reader to experience the delicious twists and turns this thriller offers.

For fans of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train, an electrifying thriller that will take you into the dark spaces that exist between a husband and a wife.

When the police started asking questions, Jean Taylor turned into a different woman. One who enabled her and her husband to carry on, when more bad things began to happen…

But that woman’s husband died last week. And Jean doesn’t have to be her anymore.

There’s a lot Jean hasn’t said over the years about the crime her husband was suspected of committing. She was too busy being the perfect wife, standing by her man while living with the accusing glares and the anonymous harassment.

Now there’s no reason to stay quiet. There are people who want to hear her story. They want to know what it was like living with that man. She can tell them that there were secrets. There always are in a marriage.

The truth—that’s all anyone wants. But the one lesson Jean has learned in the last few years is that she can make people believe anything…

  • London’s Wicked Affair

London’s Wicked Affair by Anabelle Bryant

London’s Wicked Affair by Anabelle Bryant is 99c! This is the first book in the Midnight Secrets series. It features an off-limits romance and yes, a duke. Readers seem torn on the heroine. Some love her forward-thinking nature, while others wished she were a bit more responsible.

In Anabelle Bryant’s wickedly romantic new series, secrets and seduction go hand in hand . . .

Lunden Beckford, Duke of Scarsdale, has chosen to exile himself far from London, with its painful memories and cruel gossip. Forced back to town on business, he’s eager to make his stay as brief as possible. But first, he must honor his promise to find a suitable husband for his friend’s little sister. On one hand, Amelia Strathmore has grown into a stunning, statuesque beauty. On the other, the willful chit is more likely to scandalize a drawing room with her outspoken opinions than blush prettily. At least she agrees to accept his help—if he fulfills
    certain conditions . . .

Though duty-bound to marry, Amelia longs to secretly enjoy some of life’s freedoms first. In this, as in many things, Lunden proves an excellent guide. In fact, Amelia’s girlhood admiration for her brother’s friend is fast becoming something far less innocent. Lunden believes he’s known too much darkness to offer any woman happiness. Yet Amelia is starting to see how much pleasure can lie within the right partnership—especially if one is willing to be a little wicked . . .

  • Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling is $2.99! I have such a soft spot for women in comedy writing memoirs, and I think I liked this one better than Why Not Me. Some readers felt there were chapters that outshone others, while others recommend it on audio.

Mindy Kaling has lived many lives: the obedient child of immigrant professionals, a timid chubster afraid of her own bike, a Ben Affleck–impersonating Off-Broadway performer and playwright, and, finally, a comedy writer and actress prone to starting fights with her friends and coworkers with the sentence “Can I just say one last thing about this, and then I swear I’ll shut up about it?”

Perhaps you want to know what Mindy thinks makes a great best friend (someone who will fill your prescription in the middle of the night), or what makes a great guy (one who is aware of all elderly people in any room at any time and acts accordingly), or what is the perfect amount of fame (so famous you can never get convicted of murder in a court of law), or how to maintain a trim figure (you will not find that information in these pages). If so, you’ve come to the right book, mostly!

In Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, Mindy invites readers on a tour of her life and her unscientific observations on romance, friendship, and Hollywood, with several conveniently placed stopping points for you to run errands and make phone calls. Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.

  • To Surrender to a Rogue

To Surrender to a Rogue by Cara Elliot

To Surrender to a Rogue by Cara Elliot is $1.99! This is the second book in the Circle of Sin series, though I believe it works on its own. Many readers were excited about the Bath setting and the antiquities expert heroine, but others found it to be surprisingly boring.

An expert in antiquities, Lady Alessandra della Giamatti arrives in Bath to excavate newly discovered Roman ruins-only to find herself caught in a web of evil intrigue by a blackmailer threatening to expose her scandalous past. The one man who can help her is Lord James “Black Jack” Pierson, a fellow member of the expedition and a sinfully handsome rogue whose tempting presence ignites a different sort of danger.

Jack has clashed with Alessandra in the past, so when she suddenly surrenders her body he can’t help being suspicious. Is she a scheming temptress? Or is she truly a lady in trouble? As desire and deceptions swirl around them, Alessandra and Jack must find a way to win each other’s trust. For if they don’t work together to uncover a shocking truth, their enemy-and their own simmering passions-may destroy them and everything they cherish.

  1. Georgina says:

Suleikha Snyder’s two collections of short romantic stories, Ishq Factors and Dil or No Dil, are on sale for 99c each at Amazon. I really enjoyed her novella Tikka Chance on Me, which packed a lot of heart and story into a limited word count, so I’m looking forward to trying these.

  2. Mirna says:

“Mindy Kaling really is just a Girl Next Door—not so much literally anywhere in the continental United States, but definitely if you live in India or Sri Lanka.” That sentence makes no sense since Mindy was raised in the U.S. so she was the girl next door. I expect better from SBTB.

  3. Sukari says:

    @ Mirna
That line is from the description from the publisher. I do agree that their attempt at the slightly-awkward-but-adorable-and-quirky tone doesn’t work very well there.

  4. Den says:

    @Mirna that’s the publisher’s blurb, not SBTB’s.

  5. Emily B says:

STRIPPED by Zoey Castile is on sale for $2.99 and was added to Kindle Unlimited – this is one I was excited to read after initial reviews but was turned off by the higher price tag (paying more than $5 for an ebook makes me a little twitchy, especially when it’s less than 300 pages).

  6. Mirna says:

I realize the blurb was taken from the publisher but this is particularly bad week to re-post such a thoughtless sentence.

  7. Tam says:

    An English Duke called… Lunden?

  8. Cristie says:

Shining in the Sun by Alex Beecroft (m/m romance) is free on Amazon right now.

  9. Lucy says:

In regards to Mindy Kaling’s book, I agree with Mirna that the lack of clarity about the fact that it’s the publisher’s blurb and not the opinion of the SBTB writer’s is particularly unfortunate this week. This is the second time recently that the words of a marketing team/pubisher or a reference to their words has not been clearly attributed to them rather than to anyone at SBTB, resulting in offence being taken and/or upset being caused. Considering this is such an inclusive and thoughtful website, this might be a problem to rectify rather than have your own good intentions undermined by unnecessary crossed wires.
