Help A Bitch Out

HaBO: Darcy is Gay

This HaBO comes from Gillian B. and she’s trying to track down a book for a friend:

Asking for a friend who says: I’m looking for a different take on the classic that I read some time back. Mr. Darcy is gay and Lizzie doesn’t understand why he wants to marry her. Her father explains what’s really going on and also explains that he himself married her mother solely to remain respectable and have an heir. In the end, Mr. Bennet hooks up with an Oxford student and Lizzie is glad that her father’s finally happy.

(Of course now *I* want to read it too!)

I’m pretty sure someone has read this one!

  1. Phoe says:

The only thing I can think of is Gay Pride and Prejudice but I’m not sure it’s the right one.

  2. MS says:

Time’s Up: Mr. Darcy by Fredrica Edward?

  3. A says:

So she gets to be a beard and that’s it? What’s her happy ending besides ~being happy for them~.

  4. Janet says:

    Pride/Prejudice by Ann Herendeen?

  5. Sandra says:

Probably not the right one, since I don’t remember Mr. Bennett being gay, but Pride/Prejudice by Ann Herendeen.

  6. LG says:

The premise sounds interesting, but like A, I hope that Mr. Darcy’s HEA doesn’t come at Lizzie’s expense.

@A – Maybe they have an arrangement where she has a secret lover of her own that it wouldn’t have been acceptable for her to marry (class differences, poor financial situation, etc.)? Or if she’s written as an aromantic asexual it could be a socially acceptable way of avoiding having to fake feeling things she doesn’t.

  7. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I know this is not it, but Megan Mulry’s BOUND WITH HONOR features an M/M/F/F storyline…and it works! Perhaps if Lizzie & Darcy could achieve something like that, a “Mr. Darcy is gay” storyline would give an HEA to all involved.

  8. Bethany says:

Pride and Prejudice: Hidden Lusts by Mitzi Szereto?

  9. Gillian B says:

Oh you are all wonderful. *Notes down answers to pass on to friend*

  10. Dorothea says:

Four possibilities offered so far? Clearly this is a rich field of inquiry.

  11. Irene Headley says:

I had not thought I could feel more sympathy for Mrs Bennett than I already did, and yet!

  12. Heather M says:

I have no idea what book this is, but I’m 100% convinced that Darcy is canonically bi, so it checks out.

  13. Lisa says:

You could easily sell me that Darcy is bi and totally has a thing for Mr. Bingley.

  14. Bu says:

Really–Bingley? I would rather have thought he had had a tendre for Wickham (which made the betrayal all the worse) which then caused him to be over protective of his young, naive friend–assuming he was about to be taken advantage of by Jane just as Darcy had been taken advantage of by Wickham.

  15. kitkat9000 says:

Not once have I ever considered the possibility that Darcy was bi. My oversight, obviously. My next reread I’ll pay more attention to his exchanges with Wickham as his protectiveness of Bingley felt like an older brother’s to me. Otherwise, I’ve no idea which book could answer the HABO.

  16. Marian Weaver says:

I love the Darcy/Wickham idea, and now would really, really love to see someone write that episode. It explains so much!
