HaBO: Historical Hero Would Rather Go to War

This HaBO request is from Francis and she’s trying to identity this historical romance:

This romance is set in England. The hero, a lord and eldest sibling, has to stay home while the war is going on to take care of his people.

And while the hero and heroine have known each other while growing up, she was always better friends with the younger brother. And their families are friends.

She’s home for some reason though (maybe she had been taking care of her father? or a relative?) and slowly they get to know each other better. She comes to appreciate his fulfilling his duty– staying home and taking care of his people when he would rather fight. Eventually the hero’s younger brother comes back and sees if she wants to get hitched because they’re friends, but she realizes she’s come to love the older brother.

I think it was maybe published in the last few years and might be the start of a series?

I’m sure people have read this one. Can we identify it?

  1. Rose says:

Do you remember which war it was (or what era)?

  2. Jill Q. says:

Sounds like it could be “Because of Miss Bridgerton” by Julie Quinn.

  3. geecee says:

Seconding Jill. This sounds like “Because of Miss Bridgerton”.

  4. Patricia M. says:

Third vote for Jill’s response. Definitely Because of Miss Bridgerton.

  5. MizFletcher says:

Yes, it’s got to be Because of Miss Bridgerton.

  6. Dori Calloway-Maxwell says:

I also vote for because of miss Bridgerton!

  7. TangoC says:

Can’t be Because of Miss Bridgerton because they younger brother who comes back comes with a bride (he wouldn’t be seeing if she wants to get married) and he comes back AFTER she has married the older brother I believe.

  8. Evelyn says:

I’m thinking Cathy Maxwell, but can pin it on one book.

  9. t-rex says:

I’m with everyone on Because of Miss Bridgerton.
(and now I want to read it again!)

  10. Ellie says:

There was more than one younger brother in Because of Miss Bridgerton. People had assumed she’d marry one of the younger ones, not the oldest brother.
