Help A Bitch Out

HaBO: Homeless Musician Hero

This HaBO is from Lauren, who is trying to find a romance that’s lost in her Kindle collection:

I’m trying to remember the name/author of a book that I’ve only read a review of, but would like to read. Sadly, I’m also fairly sure that I own it, but I apparently have 1200 books on my Kindle account and it seems impractical to go through all of them.

I believe the book came out a few years ago, and the hero was both homeless and a musician (violin, I think?). The heroine would walk past and listen to him play. I want to say one of their names started with a J.

Oh, those pesky Kindle collections!

  1. Jen M. says:

Some of the details don’t fit (it’s newer, it’s a guitar not a violin, and the names don’t start with J), but the description made me think of Christina Lauren’s Roomies.

  2. Bronte says:

Still life with strings? LH Cosway?

  3. Holly says:

I thought of Roomies by Christina Lauren, too!

  4. cleo says:

Huh, I think I’ve read a similar sounding mm. If only I could remember it.

  5. cleo says:

@cleo – pretty sure the mm with the homeless violinist I was thinking of is St Nacho’s by Z.A. Maxfield

  6. Betsydub says:

Is it “Always” (2017) by Sarah Jio? Here’s a brief description:
Encountering a ragged homeless man on her way to a romantic dinner with her fiancee, Kailey Crane discovers that the man is the ex she never got over and confronts an impossible choice against a backdrop of the 1990s music scene in Seattle. – (Baker & Taylor)
Probably not (the homeless ex’s name is Cade, and this book came out last year). But I bet there are plenty of readers who re-watch “Singles” every year and remember when…

  7. A says:

I also thought of Christina Lauren’s Roomies. She goes to the subway specifically to listen to him play and he is apparently some sort of musical genius who she gets a role in a Hamilton-like production.

  8. Regina says:

I literally just finished this. Roomies by Christina Lauren.

  9. Critterbee says:

Carrie did a rant about Roomies a few weeks ago!

  10. Lauren says:

Hey y’all! Lauren here. Thank you for all the suggestions!
I can tell you that it’s definitely NOT Roomies by Christina Lauren, since I also just read that recently and that’s what got me thinking about this book in the first place!

Bronte- I will check out Still Life With Strings! That sounds the most likely, though I could have sworn the hero was literally homeless, which doesn’t seem to be the case there… but it is aways possible I’m getting things mixed up.

  11. Heather says:

Hey Lauren could it be mm? The description you provided sounds exactly like a book someone recommended me~ turned out a bit differently ~ guy walks home from work everyday- sees a guy playing guitar- guitar guy has aphasia. It’s short & cute.
    Speechless- Kim Fielding

  12. Elaine says:

I haven’t read it, but Debra Anastasia’s “Poughkeepsie” has a homeless hero. Not sure if he’s a musician, though.

  13. mwikali says:

is there magic in it? I’ve read a book with a similar flavor that starts in Scotland and has some viscous fairies. Wait, no that was Singer of Souls and he was only sort of homeless.

  14. Demi says:

@Betsydub I got extremely 1-clickey over the 90’s music scene romance…where has this book been?!

No idea about the homeless musician book though…unfortunately…
there should be a turbo search feature on Amazon for our Kindle libraries, so we could search key words.

  15. Sarah says:

Did it take place in New Orleans? If so, I read the same book.

  16. PamG says:

Viscous Fairies is the name of my new band.

  17. Laurie says:

My first thought was Debra Anastasia’s Poughkeepsie….
