Three Historical Romances & a Hot Contemporary!

  • The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie

The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley

RECOMMENDED: The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley is $1.99! I loved this book and give it five stars on Goodreads. It’s easily one of my favorite historical romance and it recently showed up in the comments of our Rec League: Unassuming, Underestimated Heroes post. However, some readers didn’t feel any love necessarily between the hero and heroine. For those who have read this, what did you think?

The year is 1881. Meet the Mackenzie family–rich, powerful, dangerous, eccentric. A lady couldn’t be seen with them without ruin. Rumors surround them–of tragic violence, of their mistresses, of their dark appetites, of scandals that set England and Scotland abuzz.

The youngest brother, Ian, known as the Mad Mackenzie, spent most of his young life in an asylum, and everyone agrees he is decidedly odd. He’s also hard and handsome and has a penchant for Ming pottery and beautiful women.

Beth Ackerley, widow, has recently come into a fortune. She has decided that she wants no more drama in her life. She was raised in drama–an alcoholic father who drove them into the workhouse, a frail mother she had to nurse until her death, a fussy old lady she became constant companion to. No, she wants to take her money and find peace, to travel, to learn art, to sit back and fondly remember her brief but happy marriage to her late husband.

And then Ian Mackenzie decides he wants her.

  • The Bride

    The Bride by Julie Garwood

RECOMMENDED: The Bride by Julie Garwood is $1.99 at selection vendors! This is another one of my favorite historical romances and was one of my gateway reads to the genre, if you’ve listened to the latest podcast. It has a 4.2-star rating on Goodreads and the next book in the series is also on sale!

By edict of the king, the mighty Scottish laird Alec Kincaid must take an English bride. His choice was Jamie, youngest daughter of Baron Jamison…a feisty, violet-eyed beauty. Alec ached to touch her, to tame her, to possess her…forever. But Jamie vowed never to surrender to this highland barbarian.

He was everything her heart warned against—an arrogant scoundrel whose rough good looks spoke of savage pleasures. And thought Kincaid’s scorching kisses fired her blood, she brazenly resisted him…until one rapturous moment quelled their clash of wills, and something far more dangerous than desire threatened to conquer her senses…

  • Her Highness and the Highlander

Her Highness and the Highlander by Tracy Anne Warren

Her Highness and the Highlander by Tracy Anne Warren is $1.99! This is a romance between a princess and the dude she hires to be her bodyguard while she heads home. Readers warn that if you’re looking for historical accuracy, this isn’t really the book for you, as the heroine is a princess of a fictional country. However, others liken the book to a Disney story but for adults (and by that, I mean it contains sex).

From New York Times bestselling author Tracy Anne Warren comes the second novel in an enchanting new trilogy about three princesses brought together by friendship and fate. This is Princess Mercedes’s story…

While journeying home from Scotland, Princess Mercedes of Alden’s coach is set upon and her personal guard is killed. Barely escaping with her life, Mercedes seeks help at a nearby inn. But since she has no money and looks little better than a beggar, her claim that she is a princess is dismissed by the townsfolk as a far-fetched tale. Utterly forsaken, Mercedes wonders what is to become of her.

After years of soldiering, dispossessed Laird Daniel MacKinnon is finally coming home. While at an inn, he is confronted by a bedraggled young woman claiming to be of royal blood. Daniel doesn’t believe her wild tale, but when she asks for his protection, he agrees to serve as her bodyguard; in turn she promises to reward him handsomely once they reach London.

But Mercedes is still being pursued by ruthless hunters whose motives remain unclear. The danger increases, as does the desire that she and Daniel feel for each other, until the two of them must face the greatest danger of all: falling in love.

  • Up in Smoke

Up in Smoke by Tessa Bailey

Up in Smoke by Tessa Bailey is 99c! This is the second book in her Crossing the Line series, so if you picked up the first book when we featured it, now you can grab the next one! Some readers found the romance to be a bit over the top, but others really loved the tough, mouthy heroine. Any fans of the series in the Bitchery?

    Never start a fire you can’t control…

Connor Bannon is supposed to be dead. Dishonorably discharged from the Navy SEALs, he’s spent the last two years working as a street enforcer in Brooklyn for his cousin’s crime ring. Through a twist of fate, he’s now in Chicago, working undercover to bust criminals. But when a cute little arsonist joins the team—all combat boots, tiny jean shorts, and hot-pink hair—Connor’s notorious iron control slips.

Erin “she’s getting away” O’Dea knows two things. She hates authority. And… Nope, that’s it. When she’s forced to operate on the “right” side of the law, her fear of being confined and controlled blazes to the surface. The last thing she expects is a control freak like Connor to soothe her when she needs it most. Worse, something behind the sexy ex-soldier’s eyes ignites a dangerous inferno of desire. One that invites Erin to play with fire. And one that could get them both killed…

  5. Cordy (not stuck in spam filter sub-type) says:

“THE MADNESS OF LORD IAN MACKENZIE” is a book I’ve reread parts of a couple of times but, overall, have mixed feelings about. It feels like there’s a really great book somewhere inside of it that was executed in a basically-okay way. Parts of it are really interesting, unique, and moving. And other parts are kind of phoned in or something, like the author didn’t quite know what came next, or didn’t know how to exploit the fairly unique emotional dynamic she sets up. So… I like it, but I also wish it were the best version of itself, which I think would be a really amazing book.

  6. pamelia says:

I rank Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie among my top 10 historically and have read it about 5 times (probably more). The romance was quiet on the surface, but I really really felt it and unlike Cordy, think it’s rather perfect. I can see someone not enjoying it– it’s certainly very different, but I love it to bits.

Also on FREE is book three of the Royal Romances series (I’m a major fan of book 2). The Royal Rake is about an American girl running a tea room in Bath, England who meets a prince. I know it’s free today on Kindle.https://www.amazon.com/Royal-Rake-Romances-Book-ebook/dp/B01F2LEGMY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1467118217&sr=8-1&keywords=royal+rake#nav-subnav

I’m another who really likes The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie; I’ve reread it a number of times.

  12. Anonymous says:

I’m another with very mixed feelings about The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie. I absolutely adored Ian, and I thought he was a great character, but the rest of the novel didn’t live up to him for me, and Beth’s characterisation bothered me. She just sort of seemed to be what the plot needed her to be at any moment, rather than an actual person, and she was so overshadowed by Ian that I ended up thinking I’d have liked the book a lot better if it hadn’t been a romance.
