  • Darling Beast

    Darling Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt

RECOMMENDED: Darling Beast by Elizabeth Hoyt is $1.99! This book seven in the Maiden Lane historical romance series, and hinted at a Beauty & the Beast theme. Elyse and Redheadgirl did a join review of the book and gave it an A-:

Elyse: For me it’s a solid B+. It was a good read, but lacked the Beauty and the Beast storyline I really wanted. Also Plot Moppets. And questionable choices on Apollo’s part.

Oh, there are great sex scenes though!

    So…maybe A-?

RHG: The sex scenes were great.  I’d agree with the A-.

    A MAN CONDEMNED…

Falsely accused of murder and mute from a near-fatal beating, Apollo Greaves, Viscount Kilbourne has escaped from Bedlam. With the Crown’s soldiers at his heels, he finds refuge in the ruins of a pleasure garden, toiling as a simple gardener. But when a vivacious young woman moves in, he’s quickly driven to distraction…

    A DESPERATE WOMAN…

London’s premier actress, Lily Stump, is down on her luck when she’s forced to move into a scorched theatre with her maid and small son. But she and her tiny family aren’t the only inhabitants-a silent, hulking beast of a man also calls the charred ruins home. Yet when she catches him reading her plays, Lily realizes there’s more to this man than meets the eye.

    OUT OF ASH, DESIRE FLARES

Though scorching passion draws them together, Apollo knows that Lily is keeping secrets. When his past catches up with him, he’s forced to make a choice: his love for Lily…or the explosive truth that will set him free.

  • Island of the Swans

Island of the Swans by Ciji Ware

Island of the Swans by Ciji Ware is $1.99! I’d say this falls more into historical fiction more than historical romance territory, but perhaps some Bitchery members can shed some light on that. Readers said the book has a strong start and a strong finish, though the middle gets a little muddy.

Re-issued in its original full length, this acclaimed and bestselling romantic historical novel by award-winning author Ciji Ware tells the true story of passionate and flamboyant Jane Maxwell, the 4th Duchess of Gordon (1749-1812). In love since childhood with Thomas Fraser, when she hears that he’s been killed in America, she marries the Duke of Gordon with disastrous results. But Fraser, very much alive, returns to England to claim her love.

In addition to telling a heart-wrenching love story, Island of the Swans also paints a fascinating portrait of a powerful and controversial woman and the tumultuous era in which she lived. Patroness of poet Robert Burns, advisor to King George, painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds, Jane Maxwell was a towering figure in her own time and is an unforgettable heroine.

  • David: Lord of Honor

David: Lord of Honor by Grace Burrowes

David: Lord of Honor by Grace Burrowes is $1.99! This is the ninth book in her Lonely Lords series, two of which have been nominated for this year’s RITA awards. The heroine is a courtesan and the hero is a former physician with two different colored eyes. Readers were torn on whether or not they loved or hated the amount of angst from the tortured hero. It has a 4-star rating on GoodReads.

David Worthington, Viscount Fairly, has inherited a brothel he does not want, but hesitates to sell for fear his employees will not be treated well by the establishment’s next owner. He hits upon the idea of hiring Letty Banks, a courtesan currently without protector, to serve as madam, but soon finds himself attracted to her on more than just a physical level.

When serious harm befalls Letty as a function of her role at David’s brothel, he realizes he cannot continue to exploit a woman he cares for. He arranges a way for Letty to return to obscure respectability, and prepares to walk out of her life, only to find he cannot leave her undefended against the trouble bearing down from her past.

  • Fitzwilliam Darcy, Rock Star

Fitzwilliam Darcy, Rock Star by Heather Lynn Rigaud

Fitzwilliam Darcy, Rock Star by Heather Lynn Rigaud is $1.99! Now…this isn’t a traditional historical, but it’s a re-imagining of Pride and Prejudice with a contemporary, rock star theme. Yep, you’ve read that right. Some readers thought this was a fun and hilarious version of Austen’s classic, while others compared it to fanfiction (and not the good kind). Anyone plan on taking a chance?

Darcy’s as hot as he is talented…

Fast music, powerful beats, and wild reputations-on and off stage-have made virtuoso guitarist Fitzwilliam Darcy’s band into rock’s newest bad boys. But they’ve lost their latest opening act, and their red-hot summer tour is on the fast track to disaster. Now Darcy and bandmates Charles Bingley and Richard Fitzwilliam are about to meet their match…

But she’s about to rock his world…

Enter Elizabeth Bennet, fiercely independent star of girl-band Long Borne Suffering. Elizabeth, her sister Jane, and friend Charlotte Lucas have talent to spare and jump at the opening band slot. Elizabeth is sure she’s seen the worst the music industry has to offer. But as the days and nights heat up, it becomes clear that everyone is in for a summer to remember.

I don’t know whether to be horrified or to buy this immediately. Probably both.

Oh, look, Fitzwilliam Darcy, Rock Star is on Scribd. Well, that’s going in the library…

  3. SusanL says:

I liked Fitzwilliam Darcy, Rock Star when I read It as fanfiction titled Slurry. Not perfect, but good. The same author also wrote Longbourne and Pemberley Go to War set in the SCA, which was a lot of fun.

  4. DidiB says:

I love Elizabeth Hoyt Maiden Lane Series. My biggest problem was this came after the best book in the series – Duke of Midnight with Artemis – the best heroine. That book is awesome and Darling Beast was a wee bit predictable but really any one of the book is a sure bet wonderful read in the historical romance genre.
