Contemporaries with New Adult Heroines, Musicians, & More

  • Anything but Sweet

Anything but Sweet by Candis Terry

Anything but Sweet by Candis Terry is $1.99! This contemporary romance features a cowboy hero and a city slicker heroine, plus a plot that revolves around a makeover reality TV show taking place in a small town. A few readers found the stubborn cowboy a little too stubborn for their liking, though many lovers of small town romances enjoyed the blend of setting and sweet romance. It’s the first in the Sweet, Texas series and it has a 3.9-star rating on GR. If you’re in the mood to stock up, book two – Sweetest Mistake ( A | K | AB | Au ) – and book three – Something Sweeter ( A | K | AB | Au ) – are also on sale for $1.99! That’s three books for less than $6!

    A man who doesn’t like change . . .
For years Ex-Marine Reno Wilder managed to uphold his end of the Wilder Boys’ wild reputation. But the scars of war and the deaths of those he loved have flipped the switch on his point of view. Now, to keep tradition and memories alive, he’ll settle for a staid life of wash, rinse, repeat.

When the senior citizens of Sweet, Texas believe it’s time for their little town to become a destination for tourists they contact a new TV makeover show. Their community is chosen to participate and everyone is pleased–except Reno.

A woman who wants to change everything . . .
Beneath her headstrong desire to upend Reno’s peace and quiet, makeover show host and designer Charlotte Brooks has something to offer that has nothing to do with changing drapes and everything to do with showing him that change can be sexy, hot, and very, very sweet.

    Face-off for a happily-ever-after . . .
Neither of them saw coming. Who will stand their ground? Who will find common ground? And who will let go of their past and grab hold of a future full of promise?

  • Made in Nashville

Made in Nashville by Mandy Baggot

Made in Nashville by Mandy Baggot is 99c! This is a new adult contemporary romance that takes place in the world of country music. The heroine has PTSD after being attacked onstage during a performance, so this may be triggering for some readers. Readers compared the series to the TV show Nashville, saying if you like that, then you’ll definitely like this. Though there were some comments that the story was a little over the top at times. It had a 4-star rating on GR. Anyone read it? Because apparently it’s been on my GR TBR list for quite some time!

An on-stage attack left Honor Blackwood with more scars than just the one on her face. It’s been ten years since she left her spot as Nashville’s brightest country music star. Is now the time to return? And is she brave enough to do it?

Country rebel and rock star, Jared ‘Jed’ Marshall is hot property on the Tennessee music scene in more ways than one. He’s wild, he’s sexy and everybody wants a piece of him. But when he sets his sights on Honor, is it pure attraction or just distraction on his mind?

Honor’s record label sign the ex-boyfriend that dumped her and suddenly going back to her old life is harder than she thought. Can she get a new contract? Will she get to perform at the Marlon Festival? Or will Dan Steele destroy everything?

When a secret from the past becomes public knowledge it’s no longer just about the music. Are all the people in her life lying to her to get what they want? And who is really behind the anonymous gifts she keeps getting sent?

Join the country scene to find out!

  • Wallbanger

    Wallbanger by Alice Clayton

Wallbanger by Alice Clayton is $2.99! This is the first book in the Cocktail series and, if I’m not mistaken, the first two books follow the same couple and then the rest deviate to different couples each time. I’ve read this one in the series and I really liked it! I’d say that it deviates from the typical contemporary romance because it’s very tongue-in-cheek. I will warn you that while the book starts out very lighthearted and hilarious, it gets a little dramatic and tips towards the chick lit scale. It does, however, have a 4.1-star rating on GR!

Caroline Reynolds has a fantastic new apartment in San Francisco, a Kitchen Aid mixer to die for, and no O (and we’re not talking Oprah here, folks). She has a flourishing design career, an office overlooking the bay, a killer zucchini bread recipe, and no O. She has Clive (the best cat ever), great friends, a great rack, and no O. Adding insult to O-less, she also has an oversexed neighbor with the loudest late-night wallbanging she’s ever heard. Every moan, spank, and—was that a meow?—punctuates the fact that not only is she losing sleep, she still has—yep, you guessed it—no O. Enter Simon Parker. When the wallbanging threatens to literally bounce her out of bed, Caroline, clad in sexual frustration and a pink baby-doll nightie, confronts her heard-but-never-seen neighbor. Their late-night hallway encounter has…well…mixed results. Because with walls this thin, the tension’s gonna be thick. A delicious mix of silly and steamy, this is an irresistible tale of exasperation at first sight.

  • Lick

    Lick by Kylie Scott

Lick by Kylie Scott is $3.99! This is also a new adult contemporary romance with a music setting. It’s also book one in the Stage Dive series. Some of you may remember Elyse’s review way back in September. She wound up giving it a C+:

I liked Lick. It had some technical problems relating to the conflict at the end and the fact that without his point of view, David wasn’t always the most sympathetic. Evelyn has a strong voice though, she’s a relatable heroine, and the idea of being woo’d by a celebrity is pretty appealing.

For those who have read it, feel free to add your two cents! I know I’m always on the fence about books with music as a central theme to character.

Waking up in Vegas was never meant to be like this.

Evelyn Thomas’s plans for celebrating her twenty-first birthday in Las Vegas were big. Huge. But she sure never meant to wake up on the bathroom floor with a hangover to rival the black plague, a very attractive half-naked tattooed man in her room, and a diamond on her finger large enough to scare King Kong. Now if she could just remember how it all happened.

One thing is certain, being married to one of the hottest rock stars on the planet is sure to be a wild ride.

Oh God, I HATED Wallbanger. It was a DNF for me. The heroine was so, so annoying. A friend of mine who is a decade younger recommended it highly, though, so maybe it’s an age thing.

I read the sequel to Lick and found it really enjoyable.

  2. Amanda says:

@maybeimamazed02: I definitely think Wallbanger is one of those polarizing books, where people thought it was great and hilarious or found it to be ridiculous and frustrating. However, I usually shy away from sequels that follow the same main couple, so I haven’t gone on to continue the series.

  3. Lovecow2000 says:

Y’all do know that it started life as Twilight fanfic? It’s actually amazing just where folks take Edward and Bella.

  4. cleo says:

ARe is having a flash sale on Amber Quill Press books – a 25% rebate.

Darlene Marshall is my favorite Amber Quill Press author – Sea Change is a good one to start with (imo).

  5. Amanda says:

@Lovecow2000: I actually had no idea! I’m not really super plugged in to the goings on of fanfiction.

  6. bev says:

I liked Lick, but I loved Play the second book. The hero in Play,Mal, was one of my favorites last year.

  7. Heather Greye says:

I got Lick from the library when Elyse reviewed it and totally glommed the next 2 books in the series. I’m kind of madly in love with the series. Not sure where Lick falls if I rank the series, but I had a great time reading all three so far and have the next pre-ordered.

  8. Amanda says:

For those who have read Lick and the next books, can they be read as standalones?

  9. bev says:

I think you could. I’d start with Play and then Lead. I honestly did not remember a lot of details from Lick when I read Play.

  10. Katie Lynn says:

The Lick books are pretty good, enjoyable to read. Though I do recall coming up for air at one point and questioning some of the character’s movements, especially the prior heroines in subsequent books, before delving back in. It obviously wasn’t that much a problem for me as I think I read all three in less than a week.

  11. ChrisZ says:

I loved Wallbanger, as did the 4 people I forced to read it. LOL. I always really enjoy quirky humor between characters. Sadly, the second book in the series was a DNF.

I’ve really enjoyed the Stage Dive series as well. I’m not a huge lover of all things music, but for some reason, this type of books is total storynip for me.

  12. maybeimamazed02 says:

Play! That was the title of Lick’s sequel, thank you. 🙂 Mal was adorably funny.

  13. Made in Nashville . . . is a new adult contemporary romance”
    -and-
“It’s been ten years since she left her spot as Nashville’s brightest country music star.”

Was she a child star, or has the whole “New Adult” thing expanded to include “Adult Adult”? These subgenres are so confusing to me.

  14. Julia says:

@maybeimamazed02 Ok. Glad I’m not the only one. I’m not sure “hate” is the right word, but I DNF’d it pretty early on. I just didn’t care, didn’t believe, and didn’t find it sexy.

I really wanted to read something laugh out loud funny and sexy. People who hated Wallbanger, do you know any books that would fit the bill?

  15. Something really clicked for me with Anything But Sweet. It’s a bit expected with the city-girl-meets-small-town thing, but the author sells the story and I sunk into it.

  16. Vicki says:

Just wanted to mention that Someone Else’s Fairy Tale by E M Tippetts is free on Amazon and Kobo. This is a YA about a college student who meets a movie star and just wants to be friends. The heroine has a strong appealing voice and the interactions with the movie star and his star friends seem realistic. This is a comfort read for me and I do recommend it.
