If you’re looking for a Victorian historical with a heroine who is brave despite herself, in a book that won’t rip your heart out or drag you through rivers of angst and misery, then I think you’ll enjoy this romance.
The Duchess Takes a Husband by Harper St. George is $1.99! This is a KDD and is book four in the Gilded Age Heiresses series. This last book in the series features Camille, whose wedding to a terrible man is what kicks off book one.
What Moves the Dead by T. Kingfisher is $2.99! This was mentioned in a previous Hide Your Wallet. Kingfisher is a bit of an auto-buy around you. Did any of you pick this one up?

RECOMMENDED: How to Tame a Wild Rogue by Julie Anne Long is $1.99! This made our Best of Reviews 2023 list at number five. There are also many of Long’s books ons ale, including book one, Perils of Pleasure, in her Pennyroyal Green series. Lara gave this a Squee grade:
This book made me swoon IRL. Reading it was a fever dream and not just because of the sex scenes. I was so immersed in it that the real world and its troubles didn’t even occur to me for the duration of the book. (I am anxious by nature, so this is a feat.)
I’m Only Wicked with You by Julie Anne Long is $1.99! This was mentioned in a Hide Your Wallet post and a Cover Snark post. How often does that happen?! This is book three in the Palace of Rogues historical romance series.
Romancing Mister Bridgerton by Julia Quinn is $1.99! This is book four in the Bridgertons series, which is much loved around the Bitchery. Some readers advise reading the series in order for a richer experience, while others say you could jump into this as a standalone. What did you think of the Netflix adaption of this one? Is it the best one so far?
How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kuang is $1.99! This released last spring and was mentioned in Hide Your Wallet. I believe Kuang is the one adapting and directing Emily Henry’s Beach Read as well.

This romance just hit too many of my favourite buttons for me to be objective. For me, the highest praise I can give a romance novel is that it is original, and this book is that in every possible sense. Do not hesitate over that one-click button; I can guarantee reading satisfaction. Oh, to read this book again for the first time. I swoon!
