Some readers advise reading the series in order for a richer experience, while others say you could jump into this as a standalone. What did you think of the Netflix adaption of this one? Carrie really loved the heroine and the introduction to some awesome and strong women. However, she felt the romance was rather weak and there was a plot twist she didn’t quite care for.

If you can pick up the Julie Anne Long Palace of Rogues series on sale they’re entertaining. Book 1-2 really set up the location, after that the sequence is less important.

I liked but did not love every one of today’s featured books.
Regarding the adaptation, I liked the book a smidge better I think because while the Penelope actress is divine, I found the Colin actor a dud, plus she had such delightful chemistry with Eloise I was hoping for a different outcome. I do think it helps to read the first two books because that draws out Penelope and Colin’s backstory so you are more invested in their HEA – but that first book is such a doozy it’s hard to get past. So maybe not.
another YES vote for the Julie Anne Long Palace of Rogues series. I’m slowly collecting them all. I like the setup and the class interaction and how she writes.
I too found Netflix Colin to be a colossal dud. Penelope deserved better. That season was my least favorite, despite it being my favorite book. I love TV Benedict but am thoroughly frightened they will ruin his season as well.

The Palace of Rogues is a massively enjoyable series. The boardinghouse setting is funny and full of cozy vibes. I’m reading Book 7 right now and it is excellent
I really enjoyed Strange Practice. It managed to feel fairly cozy despite some fairly gruesome things happening.
The Palace of Rogues series was just what I needed this winter as an escape from everything going on in the world. However, after reading four of the books in 2 weeks, some aspects started to annoy me, especially the glorification of the nobility and men who ruthlessly work to acquire wealth. Less of an escape after all.
I read Romancing Mister Bridgerton a long time ago and it was my favorite of the book series, but I do want to note that the book had some fat shaming, iirc – I think book Pen lost weight before getting her hea.
And I have a the general warning that if you discovered Bridgerton from the tv series, be prepared that the books are exclusively white and straight, unlike the show.
The other big difference is that book Pen and Colin are older than tv Pen and Colin – there was a time jump after book 3. I actually really liked older Pen, my favorite scenes were with her and Lady Danbury, reflecting on how she survived her first couple seasons.
