Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.

Hey there! Hello! It’s a slow site day, so we’re bringing you Wednesday Links bright and early. Some updates here: at SBTB HQ, we gathering together to play some Dungeons & Dragons. Elyse’s wonderful husband has volunteered to DM and I’m so excited to play again. I will be playing a dwarven fighter named Wilhelmina “Willa” Bronzeblade, who is just happy to be here! As of right now, we don’t have any plans to turn … Continue reading Links: Chuck Tingle, Failures, & More

Merry Christmas! Happy Hanukkah! Happy holidays! I tried to make this collection of links mostly feel-good, cute stuff if you need it today. We hope you’re able to spend your day doing something special for yourself. … Though this is a list of “Christmas cocktails,” I think many of these would be good for any season! … A Brooklyn cat cafe has a kitten cam! The kitties are rambunctious and so adorable. There’s a lovely … Continue reading Links: Cocktails, Kittens, & More

Summer TV Binge: Killing Eve

Killing Eve poster. A white woman has her arm loosely wrapped around Sandra Oh's neck.

Killing Eve is feminist, ethnically diverse, and LGBTQIA friendly. It features incredible clothes. It also, in the very first episode, includes the extremely violent and horrifying use of a hairpin. It is simultaneously glamorous (those clothes!) and gritty (Russian prison! Dour cubicles!). I watched six of the eight episodes in a single day (I watched the other two the day before). The series killed off my productivity with even more efficiency than it killed off … Continue reading Summer TV Binge: Killing Eve

Guest Review: Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, Season Two

Dirk Gently Season 2 poster

This guest squee/review comes from author Rhoda Baxter, who discovered the Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency adaptation on Netflix. It stars the adorable Elijah Wood! Rhoda writes contemporary romantic comedies with a hint of cynicism. She likes to write about smart women and nice guy heroes. She lives in East Yorkshire, England, where there are lots of excellent tea shops, which is just as well because Rhoda is fueled by tea and cake. Her latest … Continue reading Guest Review: Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency, Season Two

Links: Kickstarter, Cosplay, & Witches

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.

It’s Wednesday! But man, I wish we were closer to the weekend. My fall allergies have made a resurgence and Benadryl reduces me to a useless, blanketed lump. Hopefully your week is going better! … The Book Smugglers have started a Kickstarter campaign! Sarah has already backed the project and I probably will as well: In 2018, The Book Smugglers turns 10 years old—and it’s now time to level up! We want to do more. … Continue reading Links: Kickstarter, Cosplay, & Witches

Links: Tom Hardy, Edna Mode, & Women Who Draw

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses.

It’s the first links post of 2017! How are we feeling about the new year? Aside from starting 2017 being terribly sick, I’m feeling good about the next 12 months. How about you? … If you’ve ever watched The Incredibles, you’d probably agree with me that Edna Mode, fashion designer for superheroes, stole the show. Well one cosplayer attended a convention dressed as Edna and made sure to point out all the capes: So Emma decided … Continue reading Links: Tom Hardy, Edna Mode, & Women Who Draw

Guest Rant: BBC and 100 Years of Mills & Boon

Book Rant - Angry woman yelling into a cell phone with text that reads Unleashed Rage Goes Here

SB Sarah: This rant/review/analysis comes from Vedrana, who found a 2008 BBC movie about Mills & Boon, and watched it online. It would be an understatement to say she found it frustrating.  Dear Smart Bitches, I’m a listener from Australia, and I know how the Bitchery likes to pick apart representations of the romance genre, its authors and its readers in the media, so I was wondering whether anyone else had seen Consuming Passions: 100 … Continue reading Guest Rant: BBC and 100 Years of Mills & Boon

Poldark: Our Next TV Project

Aiden Turner as Poldark - windswept hair, open collared shirt above high buttoned vest, the works

Starting on Sunday, June 21st, PBS will start airing Poldark, a BBC miniseries starring Aidan Turner (The Hobbit, Being Human) and Eleanor Tomlinson (Death Comes to Pemberley).  We will be recapping and reviewing each episode, and wanted to let you know this was a thing! Poldark aired in the UK earlier this spring (with Tumblr being awash with gifs), and Masterpiece Classic is handling the US airing. (I swear, someday, they will succeed on getting me … Continue reading Poldark: Our Next TV Project
