SW: This review is from Lara, who so loved The Diabolical Miss Hyde, she couldn’t wait to read the sequel. Because she discovered the series here (yay!) she asked to guest review The Devious Dr. Jekyll for us. Welcome, Lara! After reading Elyse’s review of the first book in Viola Carr’s Electric Empire series, I broke my no-impulse-buying rule and bought The Diabolical Miss Hyde. I loved it. LOVED IT! I soon began a countdown to the … Continue reading The Devious Dr. Jekyll by Viola Carr →
I just read Bitch Planet: Extraordinary Machine and now I want to run through the mall shrieking, “NON-COMPLIANT! NON-COMPLIANT!” at the top of my lungs. This comic is a huge rush and I adored it. I love comics, but I prefer to binge them rather than read one issue at a time, so I’m a little late to the Bitch Planet party (I was waiting for the first collected volume, which came out in October). … Continue reading Bitch Planet by Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentine De Landro →
Oh, Game Plan. How do I love thee. Let me count the ways. The newest book in the Game On series is about a man-bunned, tattooed, and bearded virgin football player. And that was all that anyone needed to tell me before I one-clicked so hard that I pulled a muscle. I should also note that this is my first book by Kristen Callihan, and readers are totally okay to jump right into the series with this … Continue reading The Game Plan by Kristen Callihan →
Forever Red is a young adult novel about the Marvel character, Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff). While I think my teenaged self would have adored this book, my adult self thought it was…OK. It had some great moments, mostly courtesy of Tony Stark, and some good action, but it wasn’t incredibly engrossing. The story involves Ava and Alex. Ava, like Natasha, spent time in the Red Room being tortured by Ivan Somodorov. Natasha rescued Ava when … Continue reading Forever Red by Margaret Stohl →
It’s pretty easy to write a glowing review or a scathing review – but writing a “meh” review is truly tricky. No one wants to read a review that goes, “IDK, it was fine, whatever.” However, my feelings about Newt’s Emerald are basically, “IDK, it was fine, whatever.” Newt’s Emerald is a Regency romance with magic, which is totally my catnip. It also has a heroine who dresses as a guy for strategic reasons, which … Continue reading Newt’s Emerald by Garth Nix →
Well, this didn’t take long. It has been brought to our attention that the ever-reliable Chuck Tingle has a new book out, Oppressed in the Butt by My Inclusive Holiday Coffee Cups. Because I feel that parody coffee cup porn is the perfect response to the ridiculous Starbucks coffee cup outrage, I volunteered to review the 4,700 word “book.” I even kind of enjoyed it. My mother must be so proud. I’m just going to … Continue reading Oppressed in the Butt by My Inclusive Holiday Cups by Chuck Tingle →
The Lake House by Kate Morton is part historical fiction, part gothic mystery and part family saga–which means it’s 100% Elyse-bait. The mystery that binds this book together involves the disappearance of an eleven-month-old baby, Theo Edevane, in 1933. The Edevanes were a prominent family in England, and they were hosting their annual Midsummer’s Night party at their summer home in Cornwall the night he vanished from his nursery. The book centers around three women: Alice … Continue reading The Lake House by Kate Morton →
Let me start by saying that The Rogue Not Taken by Sarah MacLean is my favorite book of hers to date. If you’ve read her, or know me, then you know that I just said a thing. I mean, there is a scene in this book where the hero sensually rubs honey on the heroine’s body while she dreamily describes the bookstore she’ll own one day. Damn. The Rogue Not Taken is the first in … Continue reading The Rogue Not Taken by Sarah MacLean →
I’ll read any Beauty and The Beast themed book; y’all know that. And this one had promise- Bella is the daughter of a archeologist-adventurer, and Miles is a duke that’s turned his back on the world because ~reasons~ and spends all his time and energy with his house full of precious Egyptian artifacts. With the help of a fairy godmother of sorts and some magic shoes, will Bella melt his heart? I have not read … Continue reading Bella and the Beast by Olivia Drake →
I don’t know why I even bother reviewing Rainbow Rowell books. They always affect me the same way. The book is announced, I squee, I get the book, I jump around, I read the book, I cry lakes of tears. At this point Rowell could publish the phone book (remember phone books?) and my review would be, “This listing of names and numbers was so poignant, it really spoke to my soul, I cried a … Continue reading Carry On by Rainbow Rowell →
Carmilla is an early vampire novel (it heavily influenced Dracula, which was written twenty-six years later). More specifically, it is Victorian Lesbian Vampire Erotica. People who think the Victorians were prudes clearly haven’t read Carmilla, in which a lesbian vampire seduces her victim night after night and day after day with “languid” movements and many “caresses.” To be honest, I pretty much just summed up the plot for you in the paragraph above. The narrator, Laura, is … Continue reading Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu →
