RECOMMENDED: A Week to Be Wicked by Tessa Dare is 99c! This is the second book in the Spindle Cove series and I absolutely love it. It might be my favorite Dare, but I think I need to read this one and When a Scot Ties the Knot back to back to make a full assessment. Carrie gave this book an A-:

Remarkably Bright Creatures
Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt is $2.99! If you want a tender, but also still an emotional wallop of a book, I cannot recommend this one more. It’s very good.

I second the recommendation for Remarkably Bright Creatures. It was such an emotionally satisfying story. And if you enjoy audiobooks, this one was delightful!
I don’t know about the “For fans of …” language in blurbs. I found Remarkably Bright Creatures to be a poignant delight which I would never have picked up if I read the “For fans of A Man Called Ove” recommendation. I found A Man Called Ove to be absolute shite of a story. Some editorial reviews really highlight the idea that each reader reads a different book. Charm? Hysterically funny? Confetti?
RE: Remarkably Bright Creatures – I HIGHLY encourage reading the sample first. The book has a lot of fans, including on this forum, but the anthropomorphism in this book did not work for me at all – it sounded like a wise/grumpy old man, not an octopus, and that took me entirely out of the story. I am the minority on this so it may not bother others, but check the sample first if you think this might be an issue for you.
@drewbird: Out of curiosity, what would have worked for you in terms of an octopus voice/tone?
The Tessa Dare is great. Which only reminds me that she hasn’t published anything in years and maybe, maybe one day THE BRIDE BET will finally come out? A girl can dream.
@Amanda – partly it was all the things that the octopus knew the human terms for and used them that threw me off? But also Octopus/Cephalopods are SO foreign to us brain/intelligence-wise – I don’t presume to know what it would sound like, but like an articulate, intelligent human was not it for me. The voice sounded interchangeable to an octogenarian tired of being cooped up in assisted living but philosophical that the end was near- knew all the lingo including “plaque”, counted things by human measurements, used words like preposterous, and this is an animal that doesn’t have ears and isn’t good at hearing, so how would it be able to listen in to the humans naming it? Again, this is very much a YMMV, but I read a book that did anthropomorphism well (Hollow Kingdom by Kira Jane Buxton), where the animals had to described and interpreted human things in animal ways (and the animals were crows – known to pick up human lingo, and pets, so the species were far closer to us and didn’t have a water sound barrier), and this one just went “oh, octopus are smart, so they must sound wise and know everything”… but animal intelligence is not having a robust vocabulary (unless you are a parrot) – it is puzzle solving and memory of caching spots, etc., not human-perceived wisdom.
To be totally fair, I noped out pretty quick so it might get better, but it felt like a gimmick (octopus are so cool and intelligent, how fun would it be to have a wise octopus as a character) with no effort to appreciate/articulate the complete difference in thought processes they would have. For the vast majority of readers this did not bother them at all – I know because I looked at the reviews to see if anyone had my take on it! But I have an animal behavior background and a love of cephalopods, so I was really excited for this one and then immediately turned off :/
