The Soldier’s Scoundrel

The Soldier’s Scoundrel by Cat Sebastian is $1.99! This is a gay historical romance with class differences, which readers seemed to really love in terms of the pairing. However, other reader mention having some problems with the book’s pacing.
A scoundrel who lives in the shadows
Jack Turner grew up in the darkness of London’s slums, born into a life of crime and willing to do anything to keep his belly full and his siblings safe. Now he uses the tricks and schemes of the underworld to help those who need the kind of assistance only a scoundrel can provide. His distrust of the nobility runs deep and his services do not extend to the gorgeous high-born soldier who personifies everything Jack will never be.
A soldier untarnished by vice
After the chaos of war, Oliver Rivington craves the safe predictability of a gentleman’s life-one that doesn’t include sparring with a ne’er-do-well who flouts the law at every turn. But Jack tempts Oliver like no other man has before. Soon his yearning for the unapologetic criminal is only matched by Jack’s pleasure in watching his genteel polish crumble every time they’re together.
Two men only meant for each other

Her Night with the Duke by Diana Quincy by 99c! This is the first in the Clandestine Affairs series. I remember seeing a lot of buzz for this one when it came out. Have you read this one?
Desire knows no reason…
When Lady Delilah Chambers finds herself stranded at a country inn on a rain-swept evening, she’s forced to fend off a group of ruffians with the help of a handsome gentleman. Irresistibly drawn to each other, Leela and the stranger spend one reckless night in each others’ arms—and then go their separate ways. But, the very next day, Leela receives the shock of her life when she meets the duke who is set on wedding her beloved stepdaughter.
When it finds two destined hearts…
One night isn’t enough with a woman as fierce, fiery, and brilliant as Leela. Elliot Townsend, Duke of Huntington, cannot believe his good fortune when their chance encounter leads to an unforgettable evening of passion. Yet Hunt’s luck runs out when he is introduced to his prospective mother-in-law. Dowagers aren’t supposed to look like this…
Leela and Hunt are determined to keep each other at arm’s length, which should be easy enough for two intelligent adults with reputations to uphold. The problem is, all logic is lost when it comes to a passion that refuses to be ignored.

Read Between the Lines by Rachel Lacey is $2.49! This is a contemporary f/f romance that has been mentioned on both Book Beat and Hide You Wallet. This is the first book in the Ms. Right series and the second is also on sale.
From award-winning author Rachel Lacey comes a playful romance about a Manhattan bookstore owner and a reclusive author who love to hate—and hate to love—each other.
Books are Rosie Taft’s life. And ever since she took over her mother’s beloved Manhattan bookstore, they’ve become her home too. The only thing missing is her own real-life romance like the ones she loves to read about, and Rosie has an idea of who she might like to sweep her off her feet. She’s struck up a flirty online friendship with lesbian romance author Brie, and what could be more romantic than falling in love with her favorite author?
Jane Breslin works hard to keep her professional and personal lives neatly separated. By day, she works for the family property development business. By night, she puts her steamier side on paper under her pen name: Brie. Jane hasn’t had much luck with her own love life, but her online connection with a loyal reader makes Jane wonder if she could be the one.
When Rosie learns that her bookstore’s lease has been terminated by Jane’s company, romance moves to the back burner. Even though they’re at odds, there’s no denying the sparks that fly every time they’re together. When their online identities are revealed, will Jane be able to write her way to a happy ending, or is Rosie’s heart a closed book?

The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry is $1.99! I read this one and was expecting some kind of eerie cryptid mystery. And while the writing was beautiful, it definitely had more of a Gothic historical fiction vibe than the paranormal mystery I was hoping for. There’s also an adaptation out with Tom Hiddleston and Claire Danes.
Set in Victorian London and an Essex village in the 1890’s, and enlivened by the debates on scientific and medical discovery which defined the era, The Essex Serpent has at its heart the story of two extraordinary people who fall for each other, but not in the usual way.
They are Cora Seaborne and Will Ransome. Cora is a well-to-do London widow who moves to the Essex parish of Aldwinter, and Will is the local vicar. They meet as their village is engulfed by rumours that the mythical Essex Serpent, once said to roam the marshes claiming human lives, has returned. Cora, a keen amateur naturalist is enthralled, convinced the beast may be a real undiscovered species. But Will sees his parishioners’ agitation as a moral panic, a deviation from true faith. Although they can agree on absolutely nothing, as the seasons turn around them in this quiet corner of England, they find themselves inexorably drawn together and torn apart.
Told with exquisite grace and intelligence, this novel is most of all a celebration of love, and the many different guises it can take.

“The Soldier’s Scoundrel” is Cat’s first book. I loved it.
“Read Between The Lines” is delightful, especially if you’re a “You’ve Got Mail” fan (even Rosie’s dog is named Brinkley). I found it charming and enjoyed it so much that I bought a print copy for my keeper shelf.
I really enjoyed the Cat Sebastian. I generally do. There are plenty of romances with class differences which generally resolve with Cinderella’s absorption to a ruling echelon, and I appreciate that Sebastian does not idealize a supposed aristocracy.
I read The Essex Serpent, went to make a note that I loved it because I had never run across anything quite like it, only to discover that I had indeed read something exactly like it, because I had read and absolutely hated it previously – yet somehow forgotten so entirely that at no point in my unintentional reread had it seemed even vaguely familiar. So… I guess it depends on what sort of mood you’re in lol?

The Soldier’s Scoundrel by Cat Sebastian is quite good, but it’s her first published novel and it shows. There are some pacing issues and there’s also a lot of plot that gets a little unwieldly, compared to her later works.
