  • Midnight Duet

    Midnight Duet by Jen Comfort

Midnight Duet by Jen Comfort is $2.49 at Amazon! I mentioned this on a previous Hide Your Wallet and was excited for this Phantom of the Opera retelling. However, I remember reading comment somewhere that it didn’t live up to the hype. Did you read it?

From The Astronaut and the Star author Jen Comfort comes a wildly electric romance about two musicians who collide on the stage of a Nevada opera house.

Self-professed diva Erika Greene has it all: a starring role on Broadway, legions of fans, spectacular natural talent. But after an accident on stage leaves her face scarred and her career in shambles, Erika retreats to Paris, Nevada, where she’s inherited a ramshackle opera house in desperate need of some TLC.

Erika pours her savings into the building, but it’s not enough to stave off casino developer Raoul Decomte’s avaricious gaze. With foreclosure imminent, she leases the space to some unexpected tenants: a German hair metal band, fronted by glam rock god Christof Daae.

Erika is tempted by Christof’s low-slung leather pants—and even more so by his ambitious drive to make Nacht Musik international superstars—but he’s off-limits. The rest of his band thinks he’s still dating their beloved keyboardist, who is conveniently not present on this jaunt to the American Southwest. When Erika finds out Christof’s been unceremoniously dumped and is trying to keep it under wraps, she makes a deal to keep his secret…for a price, of course.

Christof is desperate to hold the rest of the band together after his keyboardist’s departure, but he can’t maintain the charade forever. Nor can he resist the opera house’s mysterious proprietor, who tempts him with midnight singing lessons. It isn’t long before sensuous nighttime interludes turn into smoldering backstage encounters.

But can their newly ignited passion survive the searing light of day? Or will their beautiful duet turn into a brokenhearted power ballad for one?

  • A Touch of Darkness

A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair

A Touch of Darkness by Scarlett St. Clair is $2.99! This is a Hades & Persephone fantasy romance that skews more toward the erotic side. I know St. Clair gained a huge following in some of the self-pub/indie pub spaces. Have you read anything by her? Thoughts?

From bestselling author Scarlett St. Clair comes a dark and enthralling reimagining of the Hades and Persephone Greek myth.

“Let me worship you,” he said.
She remembered the words she had whispered to him in the back of the limo after La Rose. “You will worship me, and I won’t even have to order you.” His request felt sinful and devious, and she reveled in it.
    She answered, “Yes.”

Persephone is the Goddess of Spring in title only. Since she was a little girl, flowers have only shriveled at her touch. After moving to New Athens, she hoped to lead an unassuming life disguised as a mortal journalist. All of that changes when she sits down in a forbidden nightclub to play a hand of cards with a hypnotic and mysterious stranger.

Hades, God of the Dead, has built a gambling empire in the mortal world and his favorite bets are rumored to be impossible. But nothing has ever intrigued him as much as the goddess offering him a bargain he can’t resist.

After her encounter with Hades, Persephone finds herself in a contract with the God of the Dead, and his terms are impossible: Persephone must create life in the Underworld or lose her freedom forever. The bet does more than expose Persephone’s failure as a goddess, however. As she struggles to sow the seeds of her freedom, love for the God of the Dead grows—a love that is both captivating and forbidden.

  • Lord of the Last Heartbeat

Lord of the Last Heartbeat by May Peterson

Lord of the Last Heartbeat by May Peterson is $1.99! This is book one in the Sacred Dark fantasy romance series. I believe this series and the most recent book The Calyx Charm have been recommended a few times on the site. Have you read this one?

    Stop me. Please.

Three words scrawled in bloodred wine. A note furtively passed into the hand of a handsome stranger. Only death can free Mio from his mother’s political schemes. He’s put his trust in the enigmatic Rhodry—an immortal moon soul with the power of the bear spirit—to put an end to it all.

But Rhodry cannot bring himself to kill Mio, whose spellbinding voice has the power to expose secrets from the darkest recesses of the heart and mind. Nor can he deny his attraction to the fair young sorcerer. So he spirits Mio away to his home, the only place he can keep him safe—if the curse that besieges the estate doesn’t destroy them both first.

In a world teeming with mages, ghosts and dark secrets, love blooms between the unlikely pair. But if they are to be strong enough to overcome the evil that draws ever nearer, Mio and Rhodry must first accept a happiness neither ever expected to find.

  • Her Big City Neighbor

Her Big City Neighbor by Jackie Lau

Her Big City Neighbor by Jackie Lau is FREE! Yes, that’s right! You can start Lau’s Cider Bar Sisters series for the cost of nothing. This was mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet and Lau’s romances have usually been well reviewed here.

When small-town engineer Amy Sharpe inherits a house in Toronto, she decides it’s the perfect opportunity to start over and go back to school. Away from the family that takes her for granted, away from the ex who expected so much and gave little in return.

The new Amy enjoys wandering around the city and frequenting bubble tea shops, German beer halls, dim sum restaurants, and coffee bars serving Japanese pastries. She has a roommate with the same name as her favorite fictional character, and a group of friends who meet at a cider bar every couple of weeks.

The new Amy is also in lust with her brooding, tattooed next-door neighbor, Victor Choi, who is far from friendly but looks really hot cutting the grass without a shirt. Too bad the grass doesn’t grow faster.

As she starts telling him about her daily adventures—and as a little kissing in the garden becomes a regular activity—Amy finds her feelings are more than lust. But she fears she’s falling into her old patterns in relationships and refuses to let herself be underappreciated again.

Is Victor really more than a hot fling? And what’s he hiding behind that grumpy exterior?

  1. ReadKnitSnark says:

Miss Percy’s Pocket Guide (to the Care and Feeding of British Dragons) by Quenby Olson (the first miss percy guide book) is $2.49 on kindle. It’s in my TBR because it sounds charming… A spinster inherits a dragon egg, what’s not to love?

Unfortunately, my state of mind has been such lately that I’ve been mainlining comfort rereads and not giving new-to-me authors much of a chance. (Seriously, somebody inform me why I am in this handbasket… and where are we going again?)

  2. Darlynne says:

@ReadKnitSnark: I don’t know anyone who isn’t in some kind of hand basket going somewhere unknown. But then you pop up and mention a spinster inheriting a dragon egg, so maybe it’s not all bad news. At least we aren’t alone and our smartphones have flashlights.

  3. Kareni says:

I came here with the intent of posting about Miss Percy’s Pocket Guide (to the Care and Feeding of British Dragons) being on sale. I read it a year or two ago and quite enjoyed it.
Hope that my fellow handbasket travellers all fare well.

  4. Kareni says:

@Darlynne: no Smartphone here simply a flip phone. No wonder it’s so dark…!

  5. drewbird says:

@ReadKnitSnark – I am feeling this big-time. Between full-time work, pet-sitting (extra work), and a sick relative who needs lots of help, a shoulder injury that is preventing me from stitching (no knitting-zen!), not to mention general anxiety about EVERYTHING (Gaza, climate change, 2024 election, women’s/LGBTQIA+ rights, etc.), life right now seems all panic, no disco. So I am also comfort-binging my favorite re-reads and not giving new books much chance because I don’t need yet another un-known in my life right now. Yeah I might like it, but I also might get pissed off at the characters or the tropes or something. Better to just dive back in to my well-loved favorites that contain no surprises and all the cozy-comfort of well-known friends.

  6. chacha1 says:

I liked MIDNIGHT DUET quite a lot *except* for some pretty shitty treatment of the MMC by his bandmates / alleged friends and hilariously (unnecessarily?) compressed timeframe for Big After Story Success.

    – The Trouble with Whiskey: Dare Whiskey (The Whiskeys: Dark Knights at Redemption Ranch Book 1) by Melissa Foster
    – Corrupted by Sin (Touch of Evil Book 5) by Kennedy Layne

    $1.99:
    – Max: A Cold Fury Hockey Novel (Carolina Cold Fury Hockey Book 6)
    Sawyer Bennett

  9. DeborahT says:

@ReadKnitSnark, I’m also in a comfort reread place right now. It seems pretty crowded here in this handbasket…

  10. Lara says:

The Warden by Daniel M. Ford is $2.99 on Kindle for the rest of March. While not a romance (there’s a nascent queer crush with potential!), the heroine is a necromancer fresh out of magic college who thought she was going to get a cushy job in the city within walking distance of a good wine shop, but instead gets posted to a farming village out in the sticks and has to adjust.

I admit to bias because I know the author, but the story is fun, and Aelis (the heroine) has loads of self-confidence and is a joy to read about. Sequel comes out next month!

  11. Barbara L says:

I read A Touch of Darkness by St. Clair a year ago, and it was fine. A bit unpolished, but I enjoyed the Hades – Persephone retelling aspect.
