  • A Morbid Taste for Bones

A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters

RECOMMENDED: A Morbid Taste for Bones by Ellis Peters is $3.99 at Amazon! This is book one in The Chronicles of Brother Cadfael series, which I remember Sarah enjoying. Here’s what she said:

This book and the next few books of the series got me through the scariest parts of early Quarantimes.

On an expedition to acquire a saint’s remains, Brother Cadfael instead finds intrigue and murder

It is 1137, and the ambitious head of Shrewsbury Abbey wishes to acquire the remains of Saint Winifred for the glory of his Benedictine order. Brother Cadfael is part of the expedition sent to the saint’s final resting place in Wales, where he finds the villagers divided over the Benedictines’ quest.

When the leading opponent to moving the grave is shot dead with a mysterious arrow, some believe Winifred herself delivered the blow. Brother Cadfael knows that an earthly hand did the killing. But he doesn’t know that his plan to root out a murderer may dig up a case of love and justice, where the waves of sin may be scandal—or his own ruin.

Rules for Heiresses by Amalie Howard is $1.99! This is book two in the Daring Dukes series. Book four just came out. The heroine is an heiress who wants to avoid marriage at any cost, but seems to enter into a mutually beneficial marriage of convenience.

USA Today bestselling author Amalie Howard whisks you away with a historical romance full of drama, true love, and the perfect happily ever after. Readers will devour this tale

A rebellious heiress determined to be independentA shunned duke forced to return to his family estateAnd a scandal between them that will have the whole town aflutterSometimes, finding love means flouting the rules…

Born to a life of privilege, Lady Ravenna Huntley rues the day that she must marry. She’s refused dozens of suitors and cried off multiple betrothals, but running away—even if brash and foolhardy—is the only option left to secure her independence.

Lord Courtland Chase, grandson of the Duke of Ashvale, was driven from England at the behest of his cruel stepmother. Scorned and shunned, he swore never to return to the land of his birth. But when a twist of bad luck throws a rebellious heiress into his arms, at the very moment he finds out he’s the new Duke, marriage is the only alternative to massive scandal.

Both are quick to deny it, but a wedding might be the only way out for both of them. And the attraction that burns between them makes Ravenna and Courtland wonder if it’ll truly only be a marriage of convenience after all…

  • Witches Get Stuff Done

Witches Get Stuff Done by Molly Harper

Witches Get Stuff Done by Molly Harper is $1.99! This is a small town paranormal romance between a witch and a librarian. Sounds a little too twee for me, but it could be right up your alley.

Juggling newfound witchy powers, a house full of ghosts, and verbal battles with the handsome local librarian is almost too much for a new witch to manage. A new witch with a coven, however, can get so much more done…

From the moment Riley Everett set foot in Starfall Point, magic bubbled inside of her. But with only her late aunt’s journals and a cantankerous live-in ghost butler to instruct her on all things witchy—including her newly inherited Victorian haunted house—Riley seeks out a coven for sisterhood and support. The last person she expects to be drawn to is the town’s frustrating, yet ridiculously attractive head librarian.

Edison Held knows almost everything there is to know about Starfall Point, but Shaddow House was always off-limits, thanks to its elusive owner. If he can convince the new owner, Riley, to let him take a peek inside, there’s so much he could learn. But as he gets closer to Riley, he’s fascinated by her dazzling wit and fiery spirit. Edison will do whatever he can to help Riley keep her family legacy alive, especially if it means spending more time with the captivating new witch in town.

Bestselling author Molly Harper wields a magical pen in this hilarious, delightful witchy romcom perfect for readers of The Ex Hex and Payback’s a Witch.

  • Miss Buncle’s Book

Miss Buncle’s Book by D.E. Stevenson

RECOMMENDEDMiss Buncle’s Book by D.E. Stevenson is $2.99! Carrie loved this book and gave it an A:

For the most part, Miss Buncle’s Book is not a laugh out loud book. Its humor is gentle and understated but very funny nonetheless. It’s also a delightful ode to the power of the written word.

Barbara Buncle is in a bind. Times are harsh, and Barbara’s bank account has seen better days. Stumped for ideas, Barbara draws inspiration from fellow residents of her quaint English village, writing a revealing novel that features the townsfolk as characters. The smashing bestseller is published under the pseudonym John Smith, which is a good thing because villagers recognize the truth. But what really turns her world around is when events in real life start mimicking events in the book. Funny, charming, and insightful, this novel reveals what happens when people see themselves through someone else’s eyes.

  1. Elizabeth says:

Miss Buncle is LOL funny – love the book!

  2. Empress of Blandings says:

If you like Cate C Wells, or want to give her books a go for the low, low price of free, Nicky the Driver is free until Wednesday. I’ve enjoyed everything she’s read, and while this isn’t my favourite, even Wells’s not amazing books tend to be very well written.

It does have some gritty bits (and possible CW: I think it might have scenes about an eating disorder, although it’s been a while since I read it).

  3. Darlynne says:

Brother Cadfael is light and hope in dark times, a believer in the power of love, and an adept, thoughtful detective. For a long time, this first book wasn’t readily available in the US. The day I found a copy for my SIL and her reaction to seeing it convinced me I needed to start the series.

  5. Maureen says:

D.E. Stevenson is one of my all time favorite authors! I highly recommend Miss Buncle, and truly all her other books. It makes me so happy so many of her titles are being re-released.

  6. DiscoDollyDeb says:

To follow up @Empress of Blandings comment re Cate C. Wells’s NICKY THE DRIVER: it’s a very good book, but the heroine’s disordered eating is a big part of the plot (as is the generational trauma of domestic violence and rigid gender roles). Anything Wells writes is worthy of a look, but please exercise caution if the subjects mentioned above would be upsetting for you.

  9. Ely says:

I did my usual quick 1 to 2 page read of a new-to-me author for WITCHES GET STUFF DONE, and found this sentence on the second page (about a pre-teen wondering if the FMC is going to be sea-sick again):

His obvious half-agonizing, half-hopeful state, made Riley think of untold Jane Austen adaptations involving evil zombie children.

I don’t think I’ve ever been convinced to buy a book this quickly before.

  10. LisaM says:

I don’t know why, but I just can’t connect with D.E. Stevenson’s books. It’s frustrating when so many people love and recommend them so enthusiastically, and they should be my bookish catnip. I keep trying them in hopes I’ll catch the magic.
