  • Babel

    Babel by R.F. Kuang

Babel by R.F. Kuang is $2.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals, as are all of today’s featured sales. Definitely check out the big list, as there is more worth grabbing. This one was both highly anticipated and ended up being a major seller. Did any of you pick this one?

A novel that grapples with student revolutions, colonial resistance, and the use of language and translation as the dominating tool of the British empire.

Traduttore, traditore: An act of translation is always an act of betrayal.

1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he’ll enroll in Oxford University’s prestigious Royal Institute of Translation—also known as Babel.

Babel is the world’s center for translation and, more importantly, magic. Silver working—the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation using enchanted silver bars—has made the British unparalleled in power, as its knowledge serves the Empire’s quest for colonization.

For Robin, Oxford is a utopia dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge. But knowledge obeys power, and as a Chinese boy raised in Britain, Robin realizes serving Babel means betraying his motherland. As his studies progress, Robin finds himself caught between Babel and the shadowy Hermes Society, an organization dedicated to stopping imperial expansion. When Britain pursues an unjust war with China over silver and opium, Robin must decide…

Can powerful institutions be changed from within, or does revolution always require violence?

  • Electric Idol

    Electric Idol by Katee Roberts

Electric Idol by Katee Robert is $2.99! It’s book two in the Dark Olympus series and is a retelling of Psyche and Eros. A few of the subsequent books are also on sale as Kindle Daily Deals.

He was the most beautiful man in Olympus.
And if I wasn’t careful, he was going to be my death.

*A scorchingly hot modern retelling of Psyche and Eros that’s as sinful as it is sweet.*

In the ultra-modern city of Olympus, there’s always a price to pay. Psyche Dimitriou knew she’d have to face Aphrodite’s jealous rage eventually, but she never expected her literal heart to be at stake…or for Aphrodite’s gorgeous son to be the one ordered to strike the killing blow.

Eros has no problem shedding blood. Raised to be his mother’s knife in the dark, he’s been conditioned to accept that he’s more monster than man. But when it comes time to take out his latest target…he can’t do it. Confused by his reaction to Psyche’s unexpected kindness, he does the only thing he can think of to keep her safe: he binds her to him, body and soul.

Psyche didn’t expect to find herself married to the glittering city’s most dangerous killer, but something about Eros wakens a fire inside her she’s never felt before. As lines blur and loyalties shift, Psyche realizes Eros might take her heart after all…and she’s not sure she can survive the loss.

  • For the Wolf

For the Wolf by Hannah Whitten

For the Wolf by Hannah Whitten is $2.99! This is a dark romantic fantasy that was featured in Hide Your Wallet and was highly anticipated by me and Aarya. I remember starting it but finding it a little slow.

The first daughter is for the Throne.
The second daughter is for the Wolf.

For fans of Uprooted and The Bear and the Nightingale comes a dark fantasy novel about a young woman who must be sacrificed to the legendary Wolf of the Wood to save her kingdom. But not all legends are true, and the Wolf isn’t the only danger lurking in the Wilderwood.

As the only Second Daughter born in centuries, Red has one purpose-to be sacrificed to the Wolf in the Wood in the hope he’ll return the world’s captured gods.

Red is almost relieved to go. Plagued by a dangerous power she can’t control, at least she knows that in the Wilderwood, she can’t hurt those she loves. Again.

But the legends lie. The Wolf is a man, not a monster. Her magic is a calling, not a curse. And if she doesn’t learn how to use it, the monsters the gods have become will swallow the Wilderwood-and her world-whole.

I got Babel on sale; it look great. And the Jemisin book is very good.

  2. kkw says:

Love love love The City We Became. It’s not a romance but there is romance. Which is minimal, and yet it is everything. The book not only tells a great story, it is so well crafted that it would be a joy to read purely for the technique. Smart, funny, I can’t gush enough. Obviously. Also, and this is more about me than the book, but I never resented it for being meaningful. Because it’s never tiresome or self important. It’s just phenomenally entertaining and satisfying. And like, I don’t handle anger well. I get about two minutes of pure righteous fury and then I just feel sick and I start crying and it’s stupid and I hate it. But this somehow taps into fury and sustains and rewards it. It’s like magically harnessing lightning for good. I do not know how it is possible for a writer to be so talented!

  3. Floating Lush says:

Both Babel and The City We Became are FABULOUS on audio, highly recommended.

  4. LML says:

@kkw, I have exactly zero interest in SF, but your comment/review made me think “Hmm. Perhaps I should read this book.”

  5. Emily C says:

Just here to second everything that kkw said about The City We Became. I listened to it on audio and it was a transporting experience even for someone who’s only been to New York a handful of times. It’s just powerfully good!!

  6. Lisa F says:

I found Electric Idol to be super disappointing because it misses out on several key elements of the Cupid/Psyche myth. I know it’s an alternate, modern retelling of the story but it, but some of those elements ought to exist in the narrative no matter what. The City We Became and Babel are great.
