  • A Duke in Shining Armor

A Duke in Shining Armor by Loretta Chase

RECOMMENDED: A Duke in Shining Armor by Loretta Chase is $1.99! Carrie absolutely loved this one and gave it an A:

I should have been able to read A Duke in Shining Armor in a day. Instead, it took me a week. And do you know why? Because I purposely kept putting it down once I realized that eventually I would RUN OUT OF BOOK. How DARE this book be over?

Not all dukes are created equal. Most are upstanding members of Society. And then there’s the trio known as Their Dis-Graces.

Hugh Philemon Ancaster, seventh Duke of Ripley, will never win prizes for virtue. But even he draws the line at running off with his best friend’s bride. All he’s trying to do is recapture the slightly inebriated Lady Olympia Hightower and return her to her intended bridegroom.

For reasons that elude her, bookish, bespectacled Olympia is supposed to marry a gorgeous rake of a duke. The ton is flabbergasted. Her family’s ecstatic. And Olympia? She’s climbing out of a window, bent on a getaway. But tall, dark, and exasperating Ripley is hot on her trail, determined to bring her back to his friend. For once, the world-famous hellion is trying to do the honorable thing.

So why does Olympia have to make it so deliciously difficult for him . . . ?

  • Wahala

    Wahala by Nikki May

Wahala by Nikki May is $1.99! I remember the former cover being a beautiful purple pattern, but I like this redesign as well. I think it makes it look more fun. However, whether that’s the tone of the book, I have no idea. Shana mentioned this one on a previous Hide Your Wallet.

An incisive and exhilarating debut novel following three Anglo-Nigerian best friends and the lethally glamorous fourth woman who infiltrates their group—the most unforgettable girls since Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha.

Ronke wants happily ever after and 2.2. kids. She’s dating Kayode and wants him to be “the one” (perfect, like her dead father). Her friends think he’s just another in a long line of dodgy Nigerian boyfriends.

Boo has everything Ronke wants—a kind husband, gorgeous child. But she’s frustrated, unfulfilled, plagued by guilt, and desperate to remember who she used to be.

Simi is the golden one with the perfect lifestyle. No one knows she’s crippled by impostor syndrome and tempted to pack it all in each time her boss mentions her “urban vibe.” Her husband thinks they’re trying for a baby. She’s not.

When the high-flying, charismatic Isobel explodes into the group, it seems at first she’s bringing out the best in each woman. (She gets Simi an interview in Shanghai! Goes jogging with Boo!) But the more Isobel intervenes, the more chaos she sows, and Ronke, Simi, and Boo’s close friendship begins to crack.

A sharp, modern take on friendship, ambition, culture, and betrayal, Wahala (trouble) is an unforgettable novel from a brilliant new voice.

  • The Vagina Bible

The Vagina Bible by Jennifer Gunter

RECOMMENDED: The Vagina Bible by Dr. Jen Gunter is $2.99! We had Dr. Gunter on her own podcast episode and it’s definitely worth a listen. There have been discussions in the comments last time we featured this one and this does not address all issues people with vaginas have, especially when it comes to the trans community.

Does eating sugar cause yeast infections? Does pubic hair have a function?

Should you have a vulvovaginal care regimen?

Will your vagina shrivel up if you go without sex?

What’s the truth about the HPV vaccine?

So many important questions, so much convincing, confusing, contradictory misinformation! In this age of click bait, pseudoscience, and celebrity-endorsed products, it’s easy to be overwhelmed–whether it’s websites, advice from well-meaning friends, uneducated partners, and even healthcare providers. So how do you separate facts from fiction? OB-GYN Jen Gunter, an expert on women’s health–and the internet’s most popular go-to doccomes to the rescue with a book that debunks the myths and educates and empowers women. From reproductive health to the impact of antibiotics and probiotics, and the latest trends, including vaginal steaming, vaginal marijuana products, and jade eggs, Gunter takes us on a factual, fun-filled journey.

    Discover the truth about:

    – The vaginal microbiome
    – Genital hygiene, lubricants, and hormone myths and fallacies

  • The Book of Gothel

The Book of Gothel by Mary McMyne

The Book of Gothel by Mary McMyne is $2.99! I mentioned this one on a previous Get Rec’d. If you like dark fairy tales and villain origin stories, try this one. However, definitely check for trigger warnings through Google or the book cataloging site of your choice.

Everyone knows the story of Rapunzel in her tower, but do you know the story of the witch who put her there? Mary McMyne’s spellbinding debut reveals the truth behind the fairy tale—the truth they never wanted you to know, as only a witch might tell it.

“Smart, swift, sure-footed and fleet-winged, The Book of Gothel launches its magic from a most reliable source: the troubled heart. Mary McMyne is a magician.”—Gregory Maguire, NYT bestselling author of Wicked

Germany, 1156. With her strange black eyes and even stranger fainting spells, young Haelewise has never quite fit in. Shunned by her village, her only solace lies in the stories her mother tells of child-stealing witches, of princes in wolf-skins, and of an ancient tower cloaked in mist, where women will find shelter if they are brave enough to seek it.

When her mother dies, Haelewise is left unmoored. With nothing left for her in her village, she sets out to find the legendary tower her mother spoke of—a place called Gothel, where she meets a wise woman willing to take Haelewise under her wing. There, she discovers that magic is found not only in the realm of fairy tales.

But Haelewise is not the only woman to seek refuge at Gothel. It’s also a haven for a girl named Rika, who carries with her a secret the church strives to keep hidden. A secret that reveals a dark world of ancient spells and murderous nobles, behind the world Haelewise has always known.

“McMyne’s shimmering debut… is a sprawling epic, full of magic, love, and heartbreak. Fans of Circe and The Wolf and the Woodsman will devour this taut, empowering fairy tale.”—Publisher’s Weekly (starred review)

Common Goal by Rachel Ried is on sale in the Amazon Kndle store for $1.99. I have no idea how long the sale will last. This isn’t on any of the amazon ebook deal lists, I just happened to look up the title and found this. I’ve been a kindle user for a while but have never figured out how to find all deals. If anyone found this on a list or a link, please share which one.

  2. HeatherS says:

    @J.T. Alexis:

You can see the Kindle deals (both daily and monthly) here: https://www.amazon.com/b/?ie=UTF8&node=11552285011&ref_=sv_kstore_8

Or go to the Amazon homepage, click on the three little lines “All” in a box on the top left side, click “Books”, then “Kindle Books”. The third link option should say “Kindle Deals”. If you click on that, it will take you to see all the Kindle deals, starting with the daily deals and then the “limited time” deals. There may be a simpler way to access it, but I have such a backlog of Kindle books that I rarely go to the Kindle Store to see what’s on sale.

  3. J.T Alexis says:

    @HeatherS:
Thank you. I go to the kindle deals page almost daily but, for some reason this book didn’t show up when I first looked. Now it does. This has happened before but it may be something in my (aging) PC’s settings that isn’t refreshing right.

“How dare this book be over?” is my reaction to almost every Loretta Chase book I’ve ever read.

I thought A DUKE IN SHINING ARMOR was pretty meh. What I couldn’t really figure out is why, if people keep saying Ashmont sucks and Olympia shouldn’t marry him, Ripley is friends with him? It just didn’t make sense to me. I didn’t like the ending (as Carrie’s review notes, it gets settled with violence; unlike Carrie, I found it repellent rather than funny) and even the dog didn’t do it for me.
