  • Isn’t It Bromantic?

Isn’t It Bromantic? by Lyssa Kay Adams

Isn’t It Bromantic? by Lyssa Kay Adams is $2.99! This is book four in the Bromance Book Club series. I thought we may have had a review or mention of this one on the site, but couldn’t find anything. Have any of you kept up with the series?

With his passion for romance novels, it was only a matter of time before Vlad wrote one.

Elena Konnikova has lived her entire adult life in the shadows. As the daughter of a Russian journalist who mysteriously disappeared, she escaped danger the only way she knew how: She married her childhood friend, Vladimir, and moved to the United States, where he is a professional hockey player in Nashville.

Vlad, aka the Russian, thought he could be content with his marriage of convenience. But it’s become too difficult to continue in a one-sided relationship. He joined the Bromance Book Club to learn how to make his wife love him, but all he’s learned is that he deserves more. He’s ready to create his own sweeping romance—both on and off the page.

The bros are unwilling to let Vlad forgo true love—and this time they’re not operating solo. They join forces with Vlad’s neighbors, a group of meddling widows who call themselves the Loners. But just when things finally look promising, Elena’s past life intrudes and their happily ever after is cast into doubt.

  • Common Goal

    Common Goal by Rachel Reid

Common Goal by Rachel Reid is $1.99! Lara wrote a Lightning Review for this book and gave it a C+:

In its favour, the chemistry between the two main characters is palpable and they’re both genuine, lovely people. On the downside, the conflict was flimsy to start with and grew more tiresome towards the end of the book.

New York Admirals goalie Eric never thought his friends-with-benefits arrangement with much-younger Kyle would leave them both wanting more…

Veteran goaltender Eric Bennett has faced down some of the toughest shooters on the ice, but nothing prepared him for his latest challenge—life after hockey. It’s time to make some big changes, starting with finally dating men for the first time.

Graduate student Kyle Swift moved to New York nursing a broken heart. He’d sworn to find someone his own age to crush on (for once). Until he meets a gorgeous, distinguished silver fox hockey player. Despite their intense physical attraction, Kyle has no intention of getting emotionally involved. He’ll teach Eric a few tricks, have some mutually consensual fun, then walk away.

Eric is more than happy to learn anything Kyle brings to the table. And Kyle never expected their friends-with-benefits arrangement to leave him wanting more. Happily-ever-after might be staring them in the face, but it won’t happen if they’re too stubborn to come clean about their feelings.

Everything they both want is within reach… They just have to be brave enough to grab it.

  • Velvet Was the Night

Velvet Was the Night by Silvia Moren-Garcia

Velvet Was the Night by Silvia Moreno Garcia is $2.99! This is a noir/mystery novel set in Mexico during the 1970s. I believe this was also a Hide Your Wallet pick and I remember being super excited. Also, what a cool damn cover.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Mexican Gothic comes a “delicious, twisted treat for lovers of noir” about a daydreaming secretary, a lonesome enforcer, and the mystery of a missing woman they’re both desperate to find.

1970s, Mexico City. Maite is a secretary who lives for one thing: the latest issue of Secret Romance. While student protests and political unrest consume the city, Maite escapes into stories of passion and danger.

Her next-door neighbor, Leonora, a beautiful art student, seems to live a life of intrigue and romance that Maite envies. When Leonora disappears under suspicious circumstances, Maite finds herself searching for the missing woman—and journeying deeper into Leonora’s secret life of student radicals and dissidents.

Meanwhile, someone else is also looking for Leonora at the behest of his boss, a shadowy figure who commands goon squads dedicated to squashing political activists. Elvis is an eccentric criminal who longs to escape his own life: He loathes violence and loves old movies and rock ’n’ roll. But as Elvis searches for the missing woman, he comes to observe Maite from a distance—and grows more and more obsessed with this woman who shares his love of music and the unspoken loneliness of his heart.

Now as Maite and Elvis come closer to discovering the truth behind Leonora’s disappearance, they can no longer escape the danger that threatens to consume their lives, with hitmen, government agents, and Russian spies all aiming to protect Leonora’s secrets—at gunpoint.

I really liked Common Goal. Agree the conflict was a bit flimsy, and I also thought things resolved rather too quickly, maybe because the conflict was too thin? Nevertheless, a very enjoyable 4-star read for me, with a bit *more* to the story I would’ve given it 5. Both main characters are really likable and go through some interesting self reflection as the story progresses. I love every book of this series so take my rec with that in mind.

Drewsmina is a bananas name even by historical romance standards

  3. flchen1 says:

    Free:
    – Vella Day’s From Panic to Passion (romantic suspense)
    – Tessa Layne’s A Hero’s Devotion (Heroes of the Flint Hills 2)

  4. Lisa F says:

Velvet was the Night is my pick here, though I really enjoyed Common Goal. Bromantic was just okay and I have no memory of the Michaels.

I loooooved Velvet was the Night, I thought it was a great book about just, really difficult people. I really recommend it!

  8. Amy says:

I really enjoyed Isn’t It Bromantic. Vlad is a great character, even when he isn’t in the scene just for the comedic aspect.
