Love Songs for Skeptics by Christina Pishiris is $1.99! This is a contemporary romance that seems to have a lot going on. What I’m unsure of is whether there’s a true love triangle here with the introduction of work enemy Nick versus childhood friend Simon. Have you read this one?

A warning that these romances on the darker side and feature abusive and violent backstories. Definitely check for specific triggers. I was halfway through Under Her Skin when I bought By Her Touch. If you like angsty characters trying to rebuild their lives, check out this series.

The Footman and I by Valerie Bowman is $2.49! This is book one in The Footmen’s Club series. I’m not sure if that means all the hero’s are footmen. The hero in this one is posing as a footman to find a wife and wants one who isn’t interested in marrying him for money.

I don’t see any lady of the gentry or above marrying a footman. It doesn’t mean she’s a fortune hunter, but most of the time, everyone stays in their own class.
How do you EVENTUALLY realize you have someone else’s dog? I’d know my cat anywhere.
@Michelle, I know, right? My doggie niece has a very common coat pattern for an American pitbull terrier, but I’ve yet to mistake her for one of her litter mates. Not too mention your dog knows you. Maybe a unicolor dog like a retriever would make you take a second look, but the uniquely patterned dalmations as pictured? Not a chance.
Also, Andriana Anders Blank Canvas series was great reading. You do not need to have read the first one. They all pretty much stand on their own.
Love Songs for Skeptics is a great title. Have you noticed how many of the songs in public spaces are about love? Hoping for a properly snarky take on that.
Alpha (Ghost Mountain Wolf Shifters Book 1) by Audrey Faye is $2.49 today. I enjoyed it after seeing it recommended in the comments here.
THE MUSHROOM TREE MYSTERY by Ovidia Yu, the most recent in the Su Lin series set in 1930s Singapore, is $2.99.
You can get the full 3-book boxed set of the footman series on Amazon for $1.99 (less than the sale price of book 1!) Sounds like it’s 3 titled heroes who all masquerade as servants (for varying reasons) at the same houseparty. I bought the boxed set because I do enjoy the character in disguise/mistaken identity tropes, but I hope the heroes actually DO some really drudgerous houeshold tasks. I can only imagine how much additional work their ruses created for the real servants of the house.
I can’t imagine a lady speaking to someone else’s footman, let alone falling in love with one. Surely he would be fired for being overly familiar, and she’d lose her reputation if anyone saw them flirting or even just talking.

I ended up getting the first 3 books in the Footman series. Personally, my favorite was the first one. The others overlap and continue the story which started with “The Footman and I”.
There are 3 more books in the series and I don’t know if I’ll continue the series.
The question for me re the hero masquerading as a footman is why no one at the house party recognized him. I would hope the author has a good answer: was he a third cousin from somewhere in the country who wasn’t expected to inherit and had never been to London? Were all of the other guests somehow paid off not to out him as an aristocrat? Had he lost/gained significant weight so looked totally different? Enquiring minds want to know.
@Susan/DC The answer is that no one in the ton/aristocracy pay any attention to the help at all. The help is interchangeable and indistinguishable. For example, calling the coachman John Coachman.
In this Duke’s mind, he was looking for someone who was kind, not a gold digger. FMC saw him as a person first. Didn’t hurt he was a cutie, LOL!
It’s a cute read.
@Michelle One time I read a news story about a woman who lost her dog and then got a call that the shelter had him. She went down to the shelter, reclaimed the dog, went on with her life…only to later end up reunited with her ACTUAL dog because the dog they identified as hers was some other dog, and she could not tell the difference. Both dogs were solid black, but I didn’t think they looked identical side by side at all in the photos! I would never mix up my dogs with canine strangers, but I guess not everyone pays as much attention to their pets. (PS I think she kept both dogs though I’m not positive since I read the story years ago.)

In the Amazon excerpt, one of the hero’s friends tells him “Most people don’t really look at servants” to explain why the plan might actually work.
(Also a lot of the guests are current season debutantes who haven’t actually met the hero.)
