  • Nettle & Bone

Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher

RECOMMENDED: Nettle & Bone by T. Kingfisher is $2.99! Carrie gave this one an A-, and I’d definitely agree with that grade:

It is a fairytale that is, mostly, about grown-ups, many of whom have Seen Some Shit. It isn’t always pretty, but it’s always emotionally gripping, new, and wonderful.

With her signature mix of the grim and the delightful, award-winning author T. Kingfisher takes the old bones of fantasy and fairytale and makes them into something entirely new in this enchanting adventure.

After years of seeing her sisters suffer at the hands of an abusive prince, Marra—the shy, convent-raised, third-born daughter—has finally realized that no one is coming to their rescue. No one, except for Marra herself.

Seeking help from a powerful gravewitch, Marra is offered the tools to kill a prince—if she can complete three impossible tasks. But, as is the way in tales of princes, witches, and daughters, the impossible is only the beginning.

On her quest, Marra is joined by the gravewitch, a reluctant fairy godmother, a strapping former knight, and a chicken possessed by a demon. Together, the five of them intend to be the hand that closes around the throat of the prince and frees Marra’s family and their kingdom from its tyrannous ruler at last.

Nettle & Bone is the kind of book that immediately feels like an old friend. Fairytale mythic resonance meets homey pragmatism in this utterly delightful story. It’s creepy, funny, heartfelt, and full of fantastic characters I absolutely loved!” —Melissa Caruso, author of The Tethered Mage

  • The Roommate

    The Roommate by Rosie Danan

RECOMMENDED: The Roommate by Rosie Danan is $1.99! I liked this one and gave it a B+. Ellen also read the follow-up and gave that on a similar grade. I’m sure we’re both excited to see what’s next!

    House Rules:
    Do your own dishes
    Knock before entering the bathroom
Never look up your roommate online

The Wheatons are infamous among the east coast elite for their lack of impulse control, except for their daughter Clara. She’s the consummate socialite: over-achieving, well-mannered, predictable. But every Wheaton has their weakness. When Clara’s childhood crush invites her to move cross-country, the offer is too much to resist. Unfortunately, it’s also too good to be true.

After a bait-and-switch, Clara finds herself sharing a lease with a charming stranger. Josh might be a bit too perceptive—not to mention handsome—for comfort, but there’s a good chance he and Clara could have survived sharing a summer sublet if she hadn’t looked him up on the Internet…

Once she learns how Josh has made a name for himself, Clara realizes living with him might make her the Wheaton’s most scandalous story yet. His professional prowess inspires her to take tackling the stigma against female desire into her own hands. They may not agree on much, but Josh and Clara both believe women deserve better sex. What they decide to do about it will change both of their lives, and if they’re lucky, they’ll help everyone else get lucky too.

  • How to Fake It in Hollywood

How to Fake It in Hollywood by Ava Wilder

How to Fake It in Hollywood by Ava Wilder is $2.99! I picked this one up on a recommendation from a romance loving friend, Estelle! Estelle works in romance publishing and has been a guest on the podcast.

A talented Hollywood starlet and a reclusive A-lister enter into a fake relationship . . . and discover that their feelings might be more than a PR stunt in this sexy debut for fans of Beach Read and The Unhoneymooners.

Grey Brooks is on a mission to keep her career afloat now that the end of her long-running teen soap has her (unsuccessfully) pounding the pavement again. With a life-changing role on the line, she’s finally desperate enough to agree to her publicist’s scheme . . . faking a love affair with a disgraced Hollywood heartthrob who needs the publicity, but for very different reasons.

Ethan Atkins just wants to be left alone. Between his high-profile divorce, his struggles with drinking, and his grief over the death of his longtime creative partner and best friend, he’s slowly let himself fade into the background. But if he ever wants to produce the last movie he and his partner wrote together, Ethan needs to clean up his reputation and step back into the spotlight. A gossip-inducing affair with a gorgeous actress might be just the ticket, even if it’s the last thing he wants to do.

Though their juicy public relationship is less than perfect behind the scenes, it doesn’t take long before Grey and Ethan’s sizzling chemistry starts to feel like more than just an act. But after decades in a ruthless industry that requires bulletproof emotional armor to survive, are they too used to faking it to open themselves up to the real thing?

  • Wicked Beauty

    Wicked Beauty by Katee Robert

Wicked Beauty by Katee Robert is $2.24 at Amazon and $2.99 elsewhere! This is book three in the Dark Olympus series. It’s a menage romance featuring Helen of Troy, Achilles, and Patroclus. How do you feel about the series?

She was the face that launched a thousand ships,
The fierce beauty at the heart of Olympus,
And she was never ours to claim.

*A scorchingly hot modern retelling of Helen of Troy, Achilles, and Patroclus that’s as sinful as it is sweet.*

In Olympus, you either have the power to rule…or you are ruled. Achilles Kallis may have been born with nothing, but as a child he vowed he would claw his way into the poisonous city’s inner circle. Now that a coveted role has opened to anyone with the strength to claim it, he and his partner, Patroclus Fotos, plan to compete and double their odds of winning.

Neither expect infamous beauty Helen Kasios to be part of the prize…or for the complicated fire that burns the moment she looks their way.

Zeus may have decided Helen is his to give to away, but she has her own plans. She enters into the competition as a middle finger to the meddling Thirteen rulers, effectively vying for her own hand in marriage. Unfortunately, there are those who would rather see her dead than lead the city. The only people she can trust are the ones she can’t keep her hands off—Achilles and Patroclus. But can she really believe they have her best interests at heart when every stolen kiss is a battlefield?

  1. Mary Beth says:

    T. Kingfisher is an outstanding author! Nettle & Bone is another great book by her.

  2. Laurel says:

Nettle & Bone is fantastic, as is everything that T. Kingfisher writes. Don’t be put off by any descriptions of it as horror – I am very squeamish about such things and loved it. Think of it more as something along the lines of the original fairy tales. Things can be grim, but there is also lots of humor. There is nothing that makes you worry after you turn out the light. I highly recommend this book. It was a five star read for me, and I very rarely rate anything five stars. I really hope she writes more stories in this world, although I also want her to write more books in her Saint of Steel series too!

  3. Lena Brassard says:

If you’re dying for more necromancy, The Bone Orchard by Sara A. Mueller is $2.99. “A fascinating whodunit set in a lush, gothic world of secrets and magic—where a dying emperor charges his favorite concubine with solving his own murder, and preventing the culprit, which undoubtedly is one of his three terrible sons, from taking control of an empire.” A review says it’s “Napoleonic steampunk,” if that is or isn’t your jam.

  4. FashionablyEvil says:

Loved NETTLE AND BONE (have I read any T. Kingfisher I haven’t like? No, I have not.) I don’t think I can post a photo in here, but I saw a bone dog while I was at a festival recently! It made me very pleased. Also, do heed Carrie’s CW: stillbirth and death of infants, domestic violence including rape (all of these are alluded to but not shown or explicitly described).

I read one of the other books in Katee Robert’s Dark Olympus series (NEON GODS), and I found it competent, but basically written at a fourth grade reading level (aside from, you know, all the sexy parts.) The short declarative sentences and super short paragraphs often read as stilted to me.

  5. LML says:

I think the cover of Wicked Beauty is eye catching and gorgeous. What is wrong with romance that most covers are so unadventurous and cartoonish?

  6. Neile says:

Wow–for a change I’ve read all four of these from the library and liked all of them, despite how different they are.

NETTLE & BONE was the A on this list: inventive and beautifully written, though yeah a little dark for me.

The others were solid Bs for different reasons. I liked the sex-positive THE ROOMMATE, though if I had to choose sex-industry boyfriends it would be the character from Mariana Zapata’s LINGUS–the MCs there were more complex (though it’s also a much longer book). This is an enjoyable contemporary romance with the sex-positive twist.

HOW TO FAKE IT IN HOLLYWOOD was a B/B+ for me, but I’m a sucker for celebrity stories. I liked the chemistry and angst here, and the need to fix their careers and their emotional lives. Yeah, I bought this one.

I enjoyed WICKED BEAUTY for what it is: a hot MMF story about expanding a couple and politics amongst the gods and a Helen who wants her own political power and to be more than simply a manipulated beauty. It’s an entertainment, and good at being what it is.

  7. Lostshadows says:

Throwing in another rec for Nettle & Bone. I guarantee it will be the best book you read that’s dedicated to chicken.

While they’re not on sale, I’d also recommend her fantasy romances if you like N&B. (Except for the Clockwork Boys/Wonder Engine duology, I believe they’re all stand alones.)

  8. Kareni says:

I’m yet another one who enjoyed Nettle & Bone. I was leery of reading it because I’d heard it described as horror, but I found it a fine read (with a few icky parts).

  9. Ely says:

NETTLE & BONE was the first Kingfisher I’ve read that I don’t love. SWORDHEART is my all time favorite book, so I’m a huge fan. I don’t know if it was the headspace I was in (I read it in the midst of a really shitty period this year), but every time I think about N&B, I want to cry. It’s lovely, and beautiful and found family and all the wonderful T. Kingfisher things, but for some reason this particular incarnation is just too heartbreaking.

WICKED BEAUTY was a fun read, but I wouldn’t recommend starting the series with this one. Too much of the politics and motivations will make zero sense (and are pretty flimsy even with the backstory). This book has 3 POVs if that’s not your jam, but I found that each one has a distinct voice, which is pretty rare.

  10. Ely says:

Ack, posted before I finished. NEON GODS, the first in the Olympus series by Katee Robert was surprisingly enjoyable (WICKED BEAUTY is the third). The hero, who was described as dark and broody, turned out to be an absolute teddy bear. Not quite cinnamon roll status, but definitely not the anti-villain alphahole I was expecting.

  11. Linda says:

I want to buy Nettle and Bone, but when I clicked the link, it’s 12.99 not 2.99.

  12. Amanda says:

@Linda: Sorry about that! These were a collection of Kindle Daily Deals from yesterday, meaning they were only good for Sunday.
