  • A Splindle Splintered

A Splindle Splintered by Alix Harrow

RECOMMENDED: A Spindle Splintered by Alix E. Harrow is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily deal today. Tara gave this one an A-:

I’m a gigantic sucker for retellings, whether they’re of fairy tales, myths, or classic novels, and A Spindle Splintered might be my favourite so far. Its take on a multiverse feels fresh because there are no superheroes, only badass girls saving themselves.

USA Today bestselling author Alix E. Harrow’s A Spindle Splintered brings her patented charm to a new version of a classic story.

It’s Zinnia Gray’s twenty-first birthday, which is extra-special because it’s the last birthday she’ll ever have. When she was young, an industrial accident left Zinnia with a rare condition. Not much is known about her illness, just that no one has lived past twenty-one.

Her best friend Charm is intent on making Zinnia’s last birthday special with a full sleeping beauty experience, complete with a tower and a spinning wheel. But when Zinnia pricks her finger, something strange and unexpected happens, and she finds herself falling through worlds, with another sleeping beauty, just as desperate to escape her fate.

  • The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix is $1.99! This is another Kindle Daily Deal. Carrie review this one and gave it a B:

Truthfully, if I had known what I was getting into, I doubt I would have read this book. And yet I’m so glad I did, because this, among other things, is a story about reading whatever the heck we want to read and the power of women when they decide to unite, both of which are themes that are Relevant to my Interests, Oh, Yeah.

Fried Green Tomatoes and Steel Magnolias meet Dracula in this Southern-flavored supernatural thriller set in the ’90s about a women’s book club that must protect its suburban community from a mysterious and handsome stranger who turns out to be a blood-sucking fiend.

Patricia Campbell had always planned for a big life, but after giving up her career as a nurse to marry an ambitious doctor and become a mother, Patricia’s life has never felt smaller. The days are long, her kids are ungrateful, her husband is distant, and her to-do list is never really done. The one thing she has to look forward to is her book club, a group of Charleston mothers united only by their love for true-crime and suspenseful fiction. In these meetings, they’re more likely to discuss the FBI’s recent siege of Waco as much as the ups and downs of marriage and motherhood.

But when an artistic and sensitive stranger moves into the neighborhood, the book club’s meetings turn into speculation about the newcomer. Patricia is initially attracted to him, but when some local children go missing, she starts to suspect the newcomer is involved. She begins her own investigation, assuming that he’s a Jeffrey Dahmer or Ted Bundy. What she uncovers is far more terrifying, and soon she–and her book club–are the only people standing between the monster they’ve invited into their homes and their unsuspecting community.

  • Who’s That Earl

Who’s That Earl by Susanna Craig

RECOMMENDED: Who’s That Earl? by Susanna Craig is 99c! Catherine wrote a Lightning Review for this and gave it a B:

In fact, Who’s That Earl manages the feat of being low-tension and low-conflict while still having plenty of story and heart to keep you reading. If you are looking for something to read that is charming and relaxing and fun and won’t stress you out too much, this is the book for you.

Miss Jane Quayle excels at invention. How else could the sheltered daughter of an English gentleman create lurid gothic novels so infamous someone wants their author silenced forever? Fortunately, Jane has taken steps to protect herself, first by assuming a pen name, and second, by taking up residence at remote Dunnock Castle, surrounded by rugged scenery that might have been ripped from the pages of one of her books. Her true identity remains a secret, until one dark and stormy night…

After years of spying for the British army, Thomas Sutherland doubts the Highlands will ever feel like home again. Nevertheless, thanks to a quirk of Scottish inheritance law, he’s now the Earl of Magnus, complete with a crumbling castle currently inhabited by a notorious novelist. When the writer turns out to be the woman Thomas once wooed, suspicions rise even as mutual sparks reignite. As danger closes in, can Jane and Thomas overcome their pasts to forge a future together?

  • The Takeover Effect

The Takeover Effect by Nisha Sharma

The Takeover Effect by Nisha Sharma is $1.99! This is our third KDD in today’s sales. It’s the first book in the Singh Family Trilogy. Both Aarya and I reviewed this one. I gave it a B-Aarya gave it a C-. Have you read this one?

Hemdeep Singh knows exactly what he wants. With his intelligence and determination, he has what it takes to build his own legacy away from Bharat, Inc. and the empire his father created. But when his brother calls him home, Hem puts his dreams on hold once again to help save the company he walked away from. That’s when he encounters the devastating Mina Kohli in the Bharat boardroom, and he realizes he’s in for more than he had bargained.

Mina will do whatever it takes to recover control of her mother’s law firm, even if it means agreeing to an arranged marriage. Her newest case assignment is to assist Bharat in the midst of a potential takeover. It could be the key to finally achieving her goal while preventing her marriage to a man she doesn’t love—as long as her explosive attraction to Hem doesn’t get in the way.

As Mina and Hem work to save Bharat, they not only uncover secrets that could threaten the existence of the company, but they also learn that in a winner-takes-all game, love always comes out on top.

  2. FashionablyEvil says:

Ooh, that’s a great list, omphale. I’ve read the Lau, the Romain, and the St. John Mandel and would recommend them all.

  3. Susan says:

Book 3 of Mary Robinette Kowal’s Lady Astronaut series has been on sale on Kindle for $2.99 for a few days now. I’ve really enjoyed the first book in the series and so snapped this one up.

  4. flchen1 says:

Lady Rogue by Theresa Romain is also currently $1.99, but books 1 and 2 (Fortune Favors the Wicked, Passion Favors the Bold) are currently showing as not available in Kindle right now for me…

  5. Lena Brassard/Ren Benton says:

@flchen1: Her publisher reverted rights on a lot of her books. She’s been self-publishing them, but given the number that are missing (!!!) that undertaking is going to take a while.

  6. flchen1 says:

@Lena Brassard/Ren Benton Thank you, that makes sense! Republishing is definitely quite involved!

  7. Lora says:

About Who’s that Earl? I read it twice. Meaning that I had read
It previously, forgot it, and purchased it again bevause it seemed like something I’d like. I realized three chapters in that I’d read it before and I regret to say I found it as forgettable as I did the first time.

  8. TLB says:

Read A Spindle Splintered Big wish that it had been a bit more fleshed out. The notion that there are multiple versions of the tale is a great starting point.

Reminded me of Heinlein’s Number of the Beast theory that all tales are to be found in the multiverse and that author’s tap into the alternative realities.
