  • Witches Get Stitches

Witches Get Stitches by Juliette Cross

Witches Get Stitches by Juliette Cross is $2.49 at Amazon! This is book three in the Stay a Spell series and book two is also in sale. I feel like if you want fun, small town romance with a quirk paranormal feel, this could tick all of those boxes.

Violet Savoie has a plan. A dream, rather. To open her own tattoo shop, which caters to supernaturals in need of permanent charms. As a powerful Seer, she has the potent magic to cast every kind of spell. Except the kind to give werewolves control over their beastly side. And her business partner Nico needs help in the worst kind of way.

Nico Cruz has a secret. A motive, rather. To subtly stalk and seduce Violet until she finally recognizes they are fated to be together. Ever since their heated encounter in Austin on New Year’s Eve two years earlier, he’s been dying to get his hands—and his tongue—back on her body. He knows a woman like Violet can’t be courted in the usual way. Luckily, Nico has no scruples about misbehaving to get what he wants.

But when his former pack roams into town, and an old friend is far too interested in Violet, his focus shifts to the threat venturing into his territory. Nico may come across as the quiet, broody one, but the intruders are about to regret stepping foot in New Orleans. And when Violet goes missing, no charm or spell can keep Nico’s wolf at bay.

  • The Witch King

The Witch King by H.E. Edgmon

The Witch King by H.E. Edgmon is $1.99! Ellen was originally really excited about the premise of this one, though gave it a C:

So, while there were aspects of the reading experience I enjoyed, The Witch King kind of bummed me out. This is almost certainly partly a result of me having too high of expectations since I was so excited by the idea of reading a fae romantic fantasy with a trans main character. Your mileage may vary but I hope I’ve helped you better figure out by how much!

To save a fae kingdom, a trans witch must face his traumatic past and the royal fiancé he left behind. This debut YA fantasy will leave you spellbound.

Wyatt would give anything to forget where he came from—but a kingdom demands its king.

In Asalin, fae rule and witches like Wyatt Croft…don’t. Wyatt’s betrothal to his best friend, fae prince Emyr North, was supposed to change that. But when Wyatt lost control of his magic one devastating night, he fled to the human world.

Now a coldly distant Emyr has hunted him down. Despite transgender Wyatt’s newfound identity and troubling past, Emyr has no intention of dissolving their engagement. In fact, he claims they must marry now or risk losing the throne. Jaded, Wyatt strikes a deal with the enemy, hoping to escape Asalin forever. But as he gets to know Emyr, Wyatt realizes the boy he once loved may still exist. And as the witches face worsening conditions, he must decide once and for all what’s more important—his people or his freedom.

  • The Astronaut and the Star

The Astronaut and the Star by Jen Comfort

RECOMMENDED: The Astronaut and the Star by Jen Comfort is $1.99 at Amazon! Carrie gave this one a B:

This book is uneven, but it is also so much fun. If you want a grumpy heroine and cinnamon roll hero, some science stuff, and a lot of funny dialogue, I recommend this book. Don’t overthink it, and you’ll have a good time!

An out-of-this-world romantic comedy featuring an astronaut tasked with training a Hollywood actor for a space flick.

Astronaut Regina “Reggie” Hayes wants to be the first woman on the moon—it’s all she’s ever dreamed of. But after a PR disaster, Reggie is off the list for a lunar mission. To rehabilitate her reputation with NASA, she agrees to a different kind of assignment: astronaut “training” with a Hollywood action hero.

Jon Leo is a charmer. With credits that include an underperforming sitcom and a campy action flick called Space Dude, his upcoming role in a prestigious movie could prove he’s a star. But Jon isn’t just big muscles and an otherworldly smile—he’s also a total space nerd. He’s pumped about his own personal space camp…until he meets ice-cold Reggie.

Although Reggie and Jon are polar opposites, their mutual attraction is undeniable, and it only takes a few weeks in close quarters for them to give in to its magnetic force. Jon is set on convincing Reggie this is a match made in the heavens, but her future is in space, and his is among stars of the Hollywood kind. The odds of successfully launching a real relationship outside the confines of the training base are anything but optimal.

Reggie, content with keeping things casual, is forced by a sudden turn of events to confront the possibility of losing Jon forever. Now, she’ll do whatever it takes to win both the man and the moon.

  • Stiletto

    Stiletto by Daniel O'Malley

RECOMMENDED: Stiletto by Daniel O’Malley is $2.99! This is the much-anticipated sequel to O’Malley’s Rook, and if you’ve been waiting to add a digital copy to your library, now’s your chance. Carrie gave the book an A grade:

Stiletto has a slow pace with a lot of digressions for storytelling. It’s clear that the author loves filling in all the corners of this world with the side stories of characters and bits of trivia about life in this version of Britain. This would be unbearably self-indulgent were it not so darn good: the writing is sublime.

In this spirited sequel, The Rook returns to clinch an alliance between deadly rivals and avert epic—and slimy—supernatural war.

When secret organizations are forced to merge after years of enmity and bloodshed, only one person has the fearsome powers—and the bureaucratic finesse—to get the job done. Facing her greatest challenge yet, Rook Myfanwy Thomas must broker a deal between two bitter adversaries:

The Checquy—the centuries-old covert British organization that protects society from supernatural threats, and The Grafters—a centuries-old supernatural threat.

But as bizarre attacks sweep London, threatening to sabotage negotiations, old hatreds flare. Surrounded by spies, only the Rook and two women, who absolutely hate each other, can seek out the culprits before they trigger a devastating otherworldly war.

STILETTO is a novel of preternatural diplomacy, paranoia, and snide remarks, from an author who “adroitly straddles the thin line between fantasy, thriller, and spoof.”

  1. Karin says:

My One and Only Duke by Grace Burrowes is .99. I enjoyed this more than many of her recent books. It’s the “marriage of convenience because the hero is about to be die but then he doesn’t” plot, which I am a sucker for. A bit different than Burrowes’s usual tropes.

  2. MaryK says:

I remember liking the first book in the Stay a Spell series but I lost track of the rest of the series. I guess that’s a hazard of reading books as they come out instead of waiting for the series to be complete. Although, I’m not great at keeping track of where I am in completed series either.

I’d love to see a discussion of how other readers keep track of books they want to read, especially series. I’ve just started tracking my reading but haven’t worked out a way to include future reads in my record.

  3. Darlynne says:

STILETTO is one of my forever keepers, but I strongly recommend reading THE ROOK first. Even though Myfanwy Thomas makes a brief appearance in STILETTO, her entire backstory is told in THE ROOK and she is formidable. YMMV.

  4. Jessi says:

I recommend Stiletto on audiobook as well!

  6. Jennifer says:

The Rook definitely needs to be read before Stiletto so you get what’s going on with the rival organizations. The Rook is one of my top favorites.

    Just bought the astronaut book!

  7. Laurie says:

And O’Malley’s third book in the series, Blitz, is coming out in October!!

  8. ElsieEm says:

For the Rook/Stiletto fans, book three in the series is out in October!

  9. Lauren says:

@Jcp – thank you for the links! I had no idea the Little Free Libraries were formally linked, let alone chartered. I’ve noticed them here and there in the past and now I’m wondering where I could put one to serve the book-reading community at large.

  10. Laura George says:

Another vote here for ROOK and STILETTO — and another reader who cannot wait for the next book to come out in October. My sister HATES fantasy of any kind but somehow read these and told me: you HAVE to read these. She was right. The characters, the world building, plot and pacing are all top notch. I’m looking forward to rereading ROOK and STILETTO this fall to get ready for book #3. Reading them all in order will be totally worth your while. And my sister would say, even if you hate fantasy, you will love these stories.
