Close Up
Close Up by Amanda Quick is $1.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals, so snap this one up! This is book four in the Burning Cove series, which has historical settings, mystery, and romance. Are you a fan of the series?
Welcome to Burning Cove, California where 1930s Hollywood glamour conceals a ruthless killer…
Vivian Brazier never thought life as an art photographer would include nightly wake-up calls to snap photos of grisly crime scenes or headshots for aspiring male actors. Although she is set on a career of transforming photography into a new art form, she knows her current work is what’s paying the bills.
After shooting crime scene photos of a famous actress, the latest victim of the murderer the press has dubbed the “Dagger Killer,” Vivian notices eerie similarities to the crime scenes of previous victims—details that only another photographer would have noticed—details that put Vivian at the top of the killer’s target list.
Nick Sundridge has always been able to “see” things that others don’t, coping with disturbing dreams and visions. His talent, or as he puts it—his curse—along with his dark past makes him a recluse, but a brilliant investigator. As the only one with the ability to help, Nick is sent to protect Vivian. Together, they discover the Dagger Killer has ties to the glitz and glamour of Hollywood royalty and high society. It is a cutthroat world of allure and deception that Vivian and Nick must traverse—all in order to uncover the killer who will stop at nothing to add them to their gallery of murders.

Someone to Watch Over Me
Someone to Watch Over Me by Lisa Kleypas is $1.99! This is book one of her Bow Street Runners series, and features a courtesan, amnesia, and a hero who is kind of grumpy. Some readers loved him, others found it difficult to forgive him his assumptions about the heroine. You can also grab the second book for $2.99! Plus a few other older titles are discounted.
Grant Morgan is one of London’s most eligible and unattainable bachelors. He’s also a powerful member of the Bow Street Runners, and when he’s called to the waterfront late one night to investigate a drowning victim, Grant is stunned to recognize the face of Vivien Rose Duvall, a well-known woman of the night. He’s even more startled when he realizes that she’s alive. With no one to care for her, Grant carries Vivien to his home and revives her, only to learn that she is suffering from amnesia.
Vivien hesitantly accepts her handsome rescuer’s claim that she is his mistress, despite her misgivings about her true identity. Nevertheless, she can’t deny the marks on her throat that prove her near-drowning in the Thames was not an accident, and now she must trust the man who claims her as his paramour, for her life is in danger. As Grant searches for Vivien’s attacker, the two find themselves falling in love, all the while struggling to stay one step ahead of the evil forces that will stop at nothing to see Vivien dead.

Goddess Born
Goddess Born by Karie Edgren is $1.49! This is the first book in the Goddess Born series and seems to have an interesting premise. Some readers mentioned that the writing took a while to get used to, though others found the plot really delivered in execution.
Pennsylvania, 1730
Selah Kilbrid keeps a dangerous secret: she has the power to heal.
A direct descendent of the Celtic goddess Brigid, it’s Selah’s sacred duty to help those in need. But as the last of the Goddess Born living in the New World, she learned from an early age to keep her supernatural abilities hidden. The Quaker community of Hopewell has always been welcoming, but there’s no doubt they would see her hanged if her gift was revealed.
When a prominent minister threatens to try her with witchcraft unless she becomes his wife, Selah has only one hope–that her betrothed, a distant cousin from Ireland, arrives as planned. Marrying Samuel would keep her secret safe, preserve her sacred bloodline, and protect her from being charged as a witch.
But when news of Samuel’s death reaches the Colonies, Selah is truly on her own. Terrified, she faces an impossible choice–forfeit her powers and marry the loathsome Nathan? Or find an imposter to pose as her husband and preserve her birthright?

Lady Danger
Lady Danger by Glynnis Campbell is FREE! This is book one in The Warrior Maids of Rivenloch series. This one had me at both “free” and “warrior maids.” But also, stop holding blades on covers!
THE WARRIOR MAIDS OF RIVENLOCH….
Damsels in shining armor…riding to the rescue!
Deirdre, Helena, and Miriel, three kick-arse Scots wenches, aren’t about to become any man’s chattel, until they meet heroes who are strong enough to tame their wild ways and worthy enough to win their wayward hearts.
Born to the blade and raised to fear no one, Deirdre of Rivenloch never shies away from a fight and never turns her back on a threat to her land or her family. But she’s never met a man like Sir Pagan Cameliard, the bold and powerful knight who comes at the king’s command to make a marriage alliance with Rivenloch. To save her younger sister, Deirdre tricks Pagan into marrying her instead, and now she faces a new kind of enemy who crosses swords with her by day and lays siege to her heart by night.

I mis-read the hero’s name in Lady Danger as “Pagan Camelid” and was disappointed that he wasn’t some kind of mystical camel/llama shifter running around ancient Scotland.
I just randomly stumbled into a free bundle of three books by Saffron A. Kent: The Unrequited, Gods & Monsters, Medicine Man. “Forbidden Tales: A Three Book Collection” on Amazon (.com, at least).

I enjoyed SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME, though it felt overwritten and over-detailed at times (YMMV). I’m not sure I got the grovel I wanted out of Grant, but if you favor alpha heroes as I do, it will likely work for you. I appreciated the twists in the story. Thanks for the tip that the second one is on sale, I just clicked.
@Suze in NE – I misread your misreading of Camelid as cameleopard, which is an oldish English term for a giraffe. So many possibilities…
I did not leave notes on Goodreads, but apparently I gave SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME one star (which is pretty rare for me.) I seem to recall it being pretty wonky about virginity and heavy on the Madonna/whore complex?
About that blade on the cover of “Lady Danger”: my tai chi instructor would have a heart attack! I’ve learned several weapons forms, and the first rule is to hold a weapon properly and with respect. No live person in their right mind would grasp a double edged weapon like that, let alone rest it on their shoulders. It’s supposed to be used against your enemies, not yourself!
Problem solved if the cover doesn’t include a weapon…
Okay, so my misreading of the day was GODDESS PORN (instead of GODDESS BORN), which, when one reads the blurb, might not be much of a misreading. Definitely not as elegant or erudite as PAGAN CAMELID OR CAMELOPARD.
Spoiler for Someone to Watch Over Me
As I recall (it’s been a looong time), it’s a mistaken identity romance. The heroine isn’t the courtesan Vivien. She’s her twin/look-alike.
I picked up Lady Danger for free a while back, and if I recall correctly although I rolled my eyes a bunch due to “plucky heroine-itis”* and the realism scale was at about a 2/10, it was definitely a fun read, especially for the price of $0.00.
*I don’t quite know how to describe this: the heroine will do things just because she’s plucky/strong/brave/good at fighting, not always but especially if a man tells her not to/it’s a bad idea and the book expects us to applaud her for it regardless of how much sense it actually makes. However, it doesn’t quite fall into the TSTL category, making it eye-rolling rather than a deal-breaker.
I’m deeply fond of the Burning Cove romantic mysteries and have found them fun, but YMMV; this Kleypas wasn’t a favorite of mine, and I need to read the other two.
