  • The Frangipani Tree Mystery

The Frangipani Tree Mystery by Ovidia Yu

RECOMMENDED: The Frangipani Tree Mystery by Ovidia Yu is 99c! You may have seen this mentioned on the site recently because Sarah is reading through the series. Here’s what she has to say:

I really enjoyed this one – the setting, historical period, and mix of cultures were new to me and wonderfully absorbing, and I really like the heroine, who is trying to see through everyone’s BS, and learning that she has some barriers to her own BS detection  that need to be removed. She also has master levels of polyglot, so she can communicate across so many cultural lines, and translate through and beneath them – it’s a terrific story.

First in a delightfully charming crime series set in 1930s Singapore, introducing amateur sleuth SuLin, a local girl stepping in as governess for the Acting Governor of Singapore.

1936 in the Crown Colony of Singapore, and the British abdication crisis and rising Japanese threat seem very far away. When the Irish nanny looking after Acting Governor Palin’s daughter dies suddenly – and in mysterious circumstances – mission school-educated local girl SuLin – an aspiring journalist trying to escape an arranged marriage – is invited to take her place.

But then another murder at the residence occurs and it seems very likely that a killer is stalking the corridors of Government House. It now takes all SuLin’s traditional skills and intelligence to help British-born Chief Inspector Thomas LeFroy solve the murders – and escape with her own life.

‘Simply glorious. Every nook and cranny of 1930s Singapore is brought richly to life, without ever getting in the way of a classic puzzle plot. But what’s a setting without a jewel? Chen Su Lin is a true gem. Her slyly witty voice and her admirable, sometimes heartbreaking, practicality make her the most beguiling narrator heroine I’ve met in a long while.’ Catriona McPherson

‘Charming and fascinating with great authentic feel. Ovidia Yu’s teenage Chinese sleuth gives us an insight into a very different culture and time. This book is exactly why I love historical novels.’ Rhys Bowen

  • Just Haven’t Met You Yet

Just Haven’t Met You Yet by Sophie Cousens

Just Haven’t Met You Yet by Sophie Cousens is $2.99! This was mentioned on a previous Hide Your Wallet. The cover is giving me Mhairi McFarlane vibes.

From the New York Times bestselling author of This Time Next Year comes a heartwarming and hilarious tale that asks: what if you pick up the wrong suitcase in an airport, only to fall head over heels for its unseen owner?

Laura’s business trip to the Channel Islands isn’t exactly off to a great start. After unceremoniously dumping everything in her bag in front of the most attractive man she’s ever seen in real life, she arrives at her hotel only to realize she’s grabbed the wrong suitcase from the airport. Her only consolation? The irresistibly appealing contents of the case: a copy of her favorite book; piano music; and a rugged, heavy knit fisherman sweater only a Ryan Gosling lookalike could pull off. The owner of this suitcase is Laura’s dream man–she’s sure of it. Now, all she has to do is find him.

The mix-up seems written in the stars. After all, what are the odds that she’d find The One on the same remote island where her mom and dad had first fallen in love, especially as she sets out to write an article about their epic romance? Commissioning surly cab driver Ted to ferry her around seems like her best bet in both tracking down the mystery suitcase owner and retracing her parents’ footsteps. And if beneath Ted’s gruffness lies a wit that makes their cab rides strangely entertaining, so much the better. But as Laura’s long-lost luggage soulmate proves difficult to find–and as she realizes that the love story she’s held on a pedestal all her life might not have been that perfect–she’ll have to rethink her whole outlook on love to discover what she really wants.

  • Bookish and the Beast

Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston

Bookish and the Beast by Ashley Poston is $2.99 and a Kindle Daily Deal! Carrie gave this YA romance a C:

Bookish and The Beast isn’t a WOW book, but it’s a comforting, often funny YA read for romance fans who are either geeks or geek-sympathetic and who enjoy Beauty and the Beast variations.

In the third book in Ashley Poston’s Once Upon a Con series, Beauty and the Beast is retold in the beloved Starfield universe.

Rosie Thorne is feeling stuck—on her college application essays, in her small town, and on that mysterious General Sond cosplayer she met at ExcelsiCon. Most of all, she’s stuck in her grief over her mother’s death. Her only solace was her late mother’s library of rare Starfield novels, but even that disappeared when they sold it to pay off hospital bills.

On the other hand, Vance Reigns has been Hollywood royalty for as long as he can remember—with all the privilege and scrutiny that entails. When a tabloid scandal catches up to him, he’s forced to hide out somewhere the paparazzi would never expect to find him: Small Town USA. At least there’s a library in the house. Too bad he doesn’t read.

When Rosie and Vance’s paths collide and a rare book is accidentally destroyed, Rosie finds herself working to repay the debt. And while most Starfield superfans would jump at the chance to work in close proximity to the Vance Reigns, Rosie has discovered something about Vance: he’s a jerk, and she can’t stand him. The feeling is mutual.

But as Vance and Rosie begrudgingly get to know each other, their careful masks come off—and they may just find that there’s more risk in shutting each other out than in opening their hearts.

  • Crazy Cupid Love

Crazy Cupid Love by Amanda Heger

Crazy Cupid Love by Amanda Heger is $3.82 or $3.99 depending on the vendor! I picked this one up because I’m a sucker for mythology elements. My final review landed on a B-, because it was just too twee and fluffy for me. However, if that’s typically your baseline for reading, it might work better for you!

Have you fallen deeply in love,
But get nervous approaching your dove?
    Don’t be stupid;
    Hire a cupid!
‘Cause sometimes love needs a shove.

Eliza Herman (a.k.a. The World’s Worst Cupid) has spent her entire life carefully avoiding her calling as a Descendant of Eros. After all, happily-ever-afters are nothing but a myth. But when a family crisis requires her to fill in at the local Cupid-for-hire shop, Eliza finds herself enchanting couples under the watchful eye of her assigned mentor, Jake Sanders…the one man she could never get out of her head.

Before long, Eliza is rethinking her stance on romance—until things start going terribly wrong with her enchantments. Now Eliza and Jake must fight to unravel a conspiracy that could destroy thousands of relationships, including their own…and spell the end of Love itself.

    No pressure, right?

  1. Jill Q. says:

I loved, loved JUST HAVEN’T MET YOU YET. Very much light fiction with romantic elements. It did have a few embarrassing farce moments so steer clear if that bothers you.
I think my favorite thing about it is that it explores the whole idea of the love stories we tell. The stories we tell others (how we met, etc) and the love stories we tell ourselves (this is what true love is). But lots of times those stories are very simplistic and sometimes downright misleading or harmful I felt like the author got into that in a deeper way than I expected. (but it is definitely not a super dark or angsty book).

A bunch of books that are free this week:

The link was sent via Cate C Wells’s newsletter, and her books Against a Wall and Heavy are both available for no charge, (although the latter isn’t available through the link)

I’ve been loving Ovidia Yu’s Crown Colony series and am thinking about getting hard copies!

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Empress of Blandings: thanks for the heads-up. I grabbed a couple of books I’ve been meaning to try—and the price is certainly right!

  5. Tam says:

I got the wrong suitcase at the airport once, when I was nineteen. I’d taken my grandmother’s 1970s ancient orange suitcase to Cleveland, convinced that nobody else would have a similar orange monstrosity, and boy, was I wrong. When I opened it up, it was full of mohair sweaters and shirts with kittens embroidered on and splendid grandma underpants.

This did not end in a love story. I got my own suitcase back at the airport without fanfare, as I imagine she was similarly dismayed by the contents of mine (knee boots and mini skirts and teeny strappy shirts, it was peak Buffy era.)
