  • Dear Haiti, Love Alaine

Dear Haiti, Love Alaine by Maika Moulite

Dear Haiti, Love Alaine by sisters Maika and Maritza Moulite is $2.99! This book was featured on both Cover Awe and Hide Your Wallet. I had the pleasure of meeting these authors at BEA a few years back and they were so incredibly nice and bubbly. This one is on my TBR pile, but we all know that thing is massive.

This exceptional debut novel captures a sparkling new voice and irrepressible heroine in a celebration of storytelling sure to thrill fans of Nicola Yoon, Ibi Zoboi and Jenna Evans Welch!

When a school presentation goes very wrong, Alaine Beauparlant finds herself suspended, shipped off to Haiti and writing the report of a lifetime…

You might ask the obvious question: What do I, a seventeen-year-old Haitian American from Miami with way too little life experience, have to say about anything?

    Actually, a lot.

Thanks to “the incident” (don’t ask), I’m spending the next two months doing what my school is calling a “spring volunteer immersion project.” It’s definitely no vacation. I’m toiling away under the ever-watchful eyes of Tati Estelle at her new nonprofit. And my lean-in queen of a mother is even here to make sure I do things right. Or she might just be lying low to dodge the media sharks after a much more public incident of her own…and to hide a rather devastating secret.

All things considered, there are some pretty nice perks…like flirting with Tati’s distractingly cute intern, getting actual face time with my mom and experiencing Haiti for the first time. I’m even exploring my family’s history—which happens to be loaded with betrayals, superstitions and possibly even a family curse.

You know, typical drama. But it’s nothing I can’t handle.

  • The Gown

    The Gown by Jennifer Robson

The Gown by Jennifer Robson is $1.99! Elyse reviewed this one and gave it C+. She felt too many things were added on for length, but still had good things to say:

If you love to sew or embroider or knit and if you love the history of those things, then I think The Gown may work beautifully for you. It’s a lovely work about female friendships that are forged in shared creativity…

The Gown is marvelous and moving, a vivid portrait of female self-reliance in a world racked by the cost of war.”–Kate Quinn, New York Times bestselling author of The Alice Network

From the internationally bestselling author of Somewhere in France comes an enthralling historical novel about one of the most famous wedding dresses of the twentieth century—Queen Elizabeth’s wedding gown—and the fascinating women who made it.

“Millions will welcome this joyous event as a flash of color on the long road we have to travel.”

—Sir Winston Churchill on the news of Princess Elizabeth’s forthcoming wedding

London, 1947: Besieged by the harshest winter in living memory, burdened by onerous shortages and rationing, the people of postwar Britain are enduring lives of quiet desperation despite their nation’s recent victory. Among them are Ann Hughes and Miriam Dassin, embroiderers at the famed Mayfair fashion house of Norman Hartnell. Together they forge an unlikely friendship, but their nascent hopes for a brighter future are tested when they are chosen for a once-in-a-lifetime honor: taking part in the creation of Princess Elizabeth’s wedding gown.

Toronto, 2016: More than half a century later, Heather Mackenzie seeks to unravel the mystery of a set of embroidered flowers, a legacy from her late grandmother. How did her beloved Nan, a woman who never spoke of her old life in Britain, come to possess the priceless embroideries that so closely resemble the motifs on the stunning gown worn by Queen Elizabeth II at her wedding almost seventy years before? And what was her Nan’s connection to the celebrated textile artist and holocaust survivor Miriam Dassin?

With The Gown, Jennifer Robson takes us inside the workrooms where one of the most famous wedding gowns in history was created. Balancing behind-the-scenes details with a sweeping portrait of a society left reeling by the calamitous costs of victory, she introduces readers to three unforgettable heroines, their points of view alternating and intersecting throughout its pages, whose lives are woven together by the pain of survival, the bonds of friendship, and the redemptive power of love.

  • The Inheritance Games

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes

The Inheritance Games by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is $2.99! I picked this for a previous Hide Your Wallet as it gave me major Westing Game and Knives Out. The sequel is out today, though I’m unsure if the series is merely a duology or if there will be more after book two.

A Cinderella story with deadly stakes and thrilling twists, perfect for fans of One of Us is Lying and Knives Out.

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why–or even who Tobias Hawthorne is. To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man’s touch–and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes.

Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a con-woman, and he’s determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather’s last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

  • A Lady’s Guide to Etiquette and Murder

A Lady’s Guide to Etiquette and Murder by Dianne Freeman

A Lady’s Guide to Etiquette and Murder by Dianne Freeman is $2.99! This is book in the A Countess of Harleigh Mystery series. If you’ve exhausted all of your historical mystery with romantic subplot options, try this one. It was also mentioned in the comments of The Rec League: Mysteries with Romance Crossover Appeal.

In this exciting historical mystery debut set in Victorian England, a wealthy young widow encounters the pleasures—and scandalous pitfalls—of a London social season . . .

Frances Wynn, the American-born Countess of Harleigh, enjoys more freedom as a widow than she did as a wife. After an obligatory year spent mourning her philandering husband, Reggie, she puts aside her drab black gowns, leaving the countryside and her money-grubbing in-laws behind. With her young daughter in tow, Frances rents a home in Belgravia and prepares to welcome her sister, Lily, arriving from New York—for her first London season.

No sooner has Frances begun her new life than the ghosts of her old one make an unwelcome appearance. The Metropolitan police receive an anonymous letter implicating Frances in her husband’s death. Frances assures Inspector Delaney of her innocence, but she’s also keen to keep him from learning the scandalous circumstances of Reggie’s demise. As fate would have it, her dashing new neighbor, George Hazelton, is one of only two other people aware of the full story.

While busy with social engagements on Lily’s behalf, and worrying if Reggie really was murdered, Frances learns of mysterious burglaries plaguing London’s elite. The investigation brings death to her doorstep, and Frances rallies her wits, a circle of gossips, and the ever-chivalrous Mr. Hazelton to uncover the truth. A killer is in their midst, perhaps even among her sister’s suitors. And Frances must unmask the villain before Lily’s season—and their lives—come to a most unseemly end . . .

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Currently in the Kindle Store, KEEP THIS PROMISE, an anthology featuring eight full-length romances, for $3.99. The books are:

A Kiss to Tell by Willow Winters
Perfectly Adequate by Jewel E Ann
Black Tangled Heart by Samantha Young
    Fair Game by Monica Murphy
Waking Up in Vegas by Natasha Preston
Love, in English by Karina Halle
    Moto by M Never
    Wardrobe Malfunction by Samantha Towle

Even if you’ve read a couple of these (as I have), $3.99 is a pretty good price for the ones you haven’t, and it’s a good introduction to some new-to-you/me writers.

  2. DiscoDollyDeb says:

I should add that 100% of the profits of KEEP THIS PROMISE will be donated to Live A Thousand Lives, a charity that donates audio players (equipped with hundreds of hours of reading material) to low-to-no mobility patients in nursing facilities and hospitals.

  3. Todd says:

The Gown was fascinating; I bought it because it was on sale (through SBTB, of course) and thought it might be sort of interesting, but was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. It’s one of those books that has two time tracks – the present and the past – and you get background on who the characters were and who they became.

One thing – the design of the gown was a deep, dark secret. Norman Hartnell, the designer, even had paper pasted over the windows so no one could see in to find out the design. The women working on it had reporters basically stalking them and trying to bribe them to talk about the design. I kept thinking that one of the women could take the money, which in post-war London was significant, say she’ll only say one thing about it and, in the most conspiratorial tone possible, say, “it’s white.”

  4. squee_me says:

The Wolf and the Dove by Kathleen Woodiwiss is on sale for $1.99. I haven’t read it but I know it’s a book that gets mentioned a lot as an old skool classic.

  5. Susan/DC says:

One thing to note about Robson’s “The Gown” is that it provides a HEA for a secondary character in “Goodnight from London”. “The Gown” isn’t a sequel, but it was nice nonetheless to have this character pop up to get a well-deserved romance.

  6. Darlynne says:

@squee_me: I can still remember some of the dialog from this old skool book, I read it that many times back in the dark ages. Goodness. I probably wouldn’t want to pick it up now, but I’ll never forget it.

  7. Dottiebears says:

I loved the whole “A ladies guide to ____” series. They were fun and just a little bit different. The whole series was available on kindle unlimited not too long ago, but it looks the freebies are gone.
