  • Someone to Care

Someone to Care by Mary Balogh

Someone to Care by Mary Balogh is $1.99 and part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals! This is book four in the Westcott series and I thought there was a review for this one, but nope. Sometimes everything just blurs together. If you’re new to Balogh or count her as one of your faves, I highly recommend this guest post.

The legendary New York Times bestselling author is back with a new Westcott novel about the dispossessed countess and wife of the late Earl of Riverdale, who throws all caution to the wind when adventure calls in the form of a handsome aristocrat.

No one has felt the death of the Earl of Riverdale more keenly than his wife, the now dispossessed countess Viola Kingsley. On her way home alone from Bath, Viola meets an adventurous aristocrat at a country inn. Since she is being forced to stay for a day and night, she goes to the village fair with him and impulsively gives in to his suggestion that they run away together for a while–a brief respite from their lives of duty and responsibility. What they discover together is the last thing Viola would have ever expected…

  • A Taste of Heaven

A Taste of Heaven by Penny Watson

A Taste of Heaven by Penny Watson is 99c! This cover is making me so hungry. This is a contemporary romance with an older hero and heroine (late 40s) and a food competition show. Readers loved the heroine and her relationship with the grumpy Scottish chef hero. However, some readers felt the action of the book happened a little too quickly. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

    “Create one perfect bite.”

Good little widow Sophia Brown always follows the rules. When the producer of a cooking competition requests an amuse-bouche, the chefs stick with proteins. Sauces. A savory concoction. She has only one shot to impress the judges on A Taste of Heaven. But in a moment of defiance, she creates an extraordinary dessert, one that combines both the bitter and the sweet, just like her own life.

    That one bite changes everything.

After a year grieving for her dead husband, forty-seven-year-old Sophia is finally ready to break out of her shell. Unfortunately, there is a large, angry obstacle standing in her way. Scottish chef Elliott Adamson has a chip on his shoulder the size of Loch Ness, and he’s blocking her path to victory.

Spurred by her daughters, she embarks on a poignant adventure that takes her from the wildflower fields of Vermont to the wind-swept vista of North Berwick, Scotland. Fear, courage, and inspiration from unlikely places will mark this journey, and Sophia is determined to persevere until the very end.

  • Tall, Duke, and Dangerous

Tall, Duke, and Dangerous by Megan Frampton

Tall, Duke, and Dangerous by Megan Frampton is $1.99 and another KDD! This is book two in the Hazards of Dukes historical romance series and feature a grumpy hero. Grumpy characters are my catnip! However, some readers warn the romance and plot progression is incredibly slow.

Megan Frampton returns with the second book in the Hazards of Dukes series, a series that made Sarah MacLean say “Make Megan Frampton your next read!”

    He needs a bride…

Nash, the “dangerous” Duke of Malvern, has always bristled against the rules of English society. Hot tempered and fearful of becoming like his brutish late father, he lives a life of too much responsibility and too little joy. And although he’s vowed to never marry, a duke has a duty—and there’s only one way to get himself an heir and a spare. So Nash reluctantly takes a look around at society’s available young ladies to see who might be willing to put up with his one-word answers and frequent glowers.

    She longs for love…

After the death of her father and wicked stepmother, Ana Maria goes from virtual servant to lady-in-training, and while society life has its benefits—gorgeous gowns!—its restrictive rules stifle her sprit. And when her independent actions put her in danger, her half-brother insists Nash teach her some self-defense. While most of London’s ladies find Nash intimidating, she only sees a man who needs introducing to all the joys life has to offer. So although officially they are coming together for fighting lessons, unofficially their physical contact begins to blur the line between friendship and begins to grown into something more…

  • Magnate

    Magnate by Joanna Shupe

RECOMMENDEDMagnate by Joanna Shupe is $1.99! This historical romance takes place in the Gilded Age of New York, which is a pretty cool setting. Redheadedgirl read this one and gave it a B:

    TL;DR: NEEDS MORE GROVEL.

New York City’s Gilded Age shimmers with unimaginable wealth and glittering power. The men of the Knickerbocker Club know this more than anyone else. But for one millionaire, the business of love is not what he expected…

Born in the slums of Five Points, Emmett Cavanaugh climbed his way to the top of a booming steel empire and now holds court in an opulent Fifth Avenue mansion. His rise in stations, however, has done little to elevate his taste in women. He loathes the city’s “high society” types, but a rebellious and beautiful blue-blood just might change all that.

Elizabeth Sloane’s mind is filled with more than the latest parlor room gossip. Lizzie can play the Stock Exchange as deftly as New York’s most accomplished brokers—but she needs a man to put her skills to use. Emmett reluctantly agrees when the stunning socialite asks him to back her trades and split the profits. But love and business make strange bedfellows, and as their fragile partnership begins to crack, they’ll discover a passion more frenzied than the trading room floor…

  1. Laurel says:

I love Mary Balogh’s more recent works. The Westcott series is a good one, and there are lots of characters to keep track of. Thankfully, she has a family tree at the beginning to help. You don’t necessarily have to read these books in order, but things will make a lot more sense if you do. Someone to Care was a solid B for me. (The previous book, Someone to Wed, is I think the best book in the series, and I rated it an A.)

I also enjoyed A Taste of Heaven, and it was also a solid B. I don’t think Penny Watson is writing anymore, or at least not under that name, which is a shame. She’s a great writer.

  2. Kareni says:

I, too, enjoyed A Taste of Heaven.

  3. Darlynne says:

There were moments in A TASTE OF HEAVEN that bothered me, particularly Elliott’s self-centered behavior and bullying of Sophia. Everything ended well, he seemed to come to his senses and gain an awareness of what an asshat he’d always been. I would still recommend the book, but probably won’t re-read it.

  4. Laura says:

The Westcott series is desert island reading. As an older reader I loved that Viola had her own book. Unlike Violet Bridgerton who is confined to sexless mother

  5. Jennifer in FL says:

The fifth Veronica Speedwell book A MURDEROUS RELATION is on sale for $1.99. It doesn’t seem to be a KDD, but I don’t know how long it will last. That’s a smokin’ deal!

  6. Magically delicious says:

Eh there is a novella for Violet. Considering her husband died young some might not want to get into a full length book knowing her husband died while she was pregnant with her youngest

  7. One of the Ms. M's says:

Magnate is fun as a change of scene historical, but oh, did I struggle when the hero, a steel baron, had to go on a business trip to “handle” a conflict in West Virginia. YIKES, dude, just let me pretend there aren’t Pinkertons and smooch away!

  8. Marissa says:

Viola Kingsley of Mary Balogh’s Westcott series, and Violet Bridgerton of Julia Quinn’s Bridgerton series, are two different characters. Someone to Care is about Viola Kingsley, who was not widowed while pregnant, and this story takes place while she is a widow in her forties.

  9. Michelle says:

I discovered Balogh during the pandemic and have adored binging her works.
