  • Goddess with a Blade

Goddess with a Blade by Lauren Dane

Goddess with a Blade by Lauren Dane is $2.99! This is an urban fantasy novel with an ass-kicking heroine and vampires. Readers complain that it’s slow to start, which I think is a common problem with any first book in a new UF series. Many, though, loved the heroine and thought she had a great blend of humor, badassery, and sexiness.

Rowan Summerwaite is no ordinary woman. Physical vessel to the Celtic Goddess Brigid and raised by the leader of the Vampire Nation, she’s a supercharged hunter with the power to slay any vampire who violates the age-old treaty.

A recent string of murders has her at odds with Las Vegas’s new Scion, the arrogant and powerful Clive Stewart. The killings have the mark of Vampire all over them, and Rowan warns Clive to keep his people in line—or she’ll mete out her own brand of justice.

Though her dealings with Clive are adversarial to say the least, Rowan is intensely aware of her attraction to him. But she can’t let it distract her from her duty—to find and battle the killer before more women die.

  • Star Wars The High Republic: Into the Dark

Star Wars The High Republic: Into the Dark by Claudia Gray

Star Wars The High Republic: Into the Dark by Claudia Gray is 99c! We had a great guest review for this one yesterday and Crystal Anne with an E has recommended Gray’s Star War books previously. So if you want to keep the May the Fourth energy going, pick this one up before the sale suddenly expires!

Long before the First Order, before the Empire, before even The Phantom Menace…Jedi lit the way for the galaxy in The High Republic.

Padawan Reath Silas is being sent from the cosmopolitan galactic capital of Coruscant to the undeveloped frontier―and he couldn’t be less happy about it. He’d rather stay at the Jedi Temple, studying the archives. But when the ship he’s traveling on is knocked out of hyperspace in a galactic-wide disaster, Reath finds himself at the center of the action.

The Jedi and their traveling companions find refuge on what appears to be an abandoned space station. But then strange things start happening, leading the Jedi to investigate the truth behind the mysterious station, a truth that could end in tragedy…

  • The Zig Zag Girl

The Zig Zag Girl by Elly Griffiths

The Zig Zag Girl by Elly Griffiths is $2.99! This is book one in the Magic Men Mysteries series. It’s a post-WWII historical mystery with magicians. Readers found the book to be fun, but mentioned it wasn’t as engaging as Griffith’s Ruth Galloway series.

    Brighton, 1950.

When the body of a girl is found, cut into three, Detective Inspector Edgar Stephens is reminded of a magic trick, the Zig Zag Girl.

The inventor of the trick, Max Mephisto, is an old friend of Edgar’s. They served together in the war as part of a shadowy unit called the Magic Men.

Max is still on the circuit, touring seaside towns in the company of ventriloquists, sword-swallowers and dancing girls. Changing times mean that variety is not what it once was, yet Max is reluctant to leave this world to help Edgar investigate. But when the dead girl turns out to be known to him, Max changes his mind.

Another death, another magic trick: Edgar and Max become convinced that the answer to the murders lies in their army days. When Edgar receives a letter warning of another ‘trick’, the Wolf Trap, he knows that they are all in danger…

  • The Devilish Duke

The Devilish Duke by Maddison Michaels

The Devilish Duke by Maddison Michaels is 99c! This is the first book in the Saints & Scoundrels series. This one has a marriage of convenience and the hint of a mystery. Readers really loved the heroine, but found the pacing uneven. It has a 4-star rating on Goodreads.

Devlin Markham, the notorious “Devil Duke” of Huntington, needs a woman. And not just any woman. If he can’t woo one of the most eccentric bluestockings of the Ton within the month, he can kiss his hard-earned fortune goodbye. But he’s always thought love a wasted emotion and marriage an inconvenience at best. And oddly enough, Lady Sophie Wolcott seems unmoved by his charm…

When Sophie learns her beloved orphanage is in imminent danger, she will do anything to save it. Even marry a ruthless rake who takes what he wants in business and pleasure. A man who’s everything she’s always feared most—but whom she reluctantly begins yearning for.

Then Sophie becomes the target of a killer lurking from the dark shadows of Devlin’s past. And they find not only their lives in jeopardy but their very hearts.

Also the first book in her Frozen Hearts series, Arctic Sun is $1.99.

I’ve read all of these and enjoyed them. This author is great about including lesser known or used sexual orientations such as pansexual, demisexual, and grey ace in her books.

  2. SusanE says:

My notes on The Devilish Duke say the writing was good but there are sadistic murders on page. YMMV but I won’t read it again.

  3. Carole says:

Agree Book 1 of Goddess with a Blade starts the world-building and I absolutely LOVE the Series which gets better with each book. Rowan is a kick-ass snarky heroine who has a hidden softer side. I especially liked the spiritual mystical Goddess and ritual aspects of Rowan channeling and embodying Celtic Goddess Brigid. I also appreciated the complexity of her closest relationships with men in her life – her friend Jack, her lover Clive and her Foster Father. All these relationships are not without friction, but there is underlying affection, maturity and respect in all of them. The romance that develops through several books starts as a red hot steamy hook-up, but becomes a sighworthy romance and balanced supportive partership in the later books. All the books in the series were A or A+ Ratings for me. I think fans of the Kate Daniels Series by Ilona Andrews would thoroughly enjoy this series. Highly recommend.

  4. GraceElizabeth says:

I’m not sure I can cope with the sexy vampire hero being called Clive. I might have to get over it as the series sounds great.

  5. Puddleglum says:

Oh, but just think of Clive Owen. He’s make a great vampire.

  6. Cristie says:

@Carole–you sold me on Goddess with a Blade–so I’m off to one click. Thank you!

  7. Lisa F says:

The Zig Zag girl is pretty good – memorable setting, enjoyable lead characters, good mystery.
