  • The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie

The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley

RECOMMENDED: The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie by Jennifer Ashley is $1.99! I loved this book and give it five stars on Goodreads. It’s easily one of my favorite historical romance and it recently showed up in the comments of our Rec League: Unassuming, Underestimated Heroes post. However, some readers didn’t feel any love necessarily between the hero and heroine. For those who have read this, what did you think?

The year is 1881. Meet the Mackenzie family–rich, powerful, dangerous, eccentric. A lady couldn’t be seen with them without ruin. Rumors surround them–of tragic violence, of their mistresses, of their dark appetites, of scandals that set England and Scotland abuzz.

The youngest brother, Ian, known as the Mad Mackenzie, spent most of his young life in an asylum, and everyone agrees he is decidedly odd. He’s also hard and handsome and has a penchant for Ming pottery and beautiful women.

Beth Ackerley, widow, has recently come into a fortune. She has decided that she wants no more drama in her life. She was raised in drama–an alcoholic father who drove them into the workhouse, a frail mother she had to nurse until her death, a fussy old lady she became constant companion to. No, she wants to take her money and find peace, to travel, to learn art, to sit back and fondly remember her brief but happy marriage to her late husband.

And then Ian Mackenzie decides he wants her.

  • The Beautiful Ashes

The Beautiful Ashes by Jeaniene Frost

The Beautiful Ashes by Jeaniene Frost is $1.99! This is the first book in her Broken Destiny series, which is a New Adult paranormal romance/urban fantasy. I like the new cover design, despite the model looking like he’s mid Thanos snap.

Sometimes, falling in love really is the end of the world… don’t miss this fan-favorite tale from New York Times bestselling author Jeaniene Frost.

Ivy has always seen things that she cannot explain. Strange things. Otherworldly things. But when her sister goes missing, Ivy discovers the truth is far worse–her hallucinations are real, and her sister is imprisoned in a realm beyond Ivy’s reach. The one person who can help her is the dangerously attractive rebel who’s bound by an ancient legacy to betray her.

The fate Adrian has fought to escape is here – but he never expected the burning need he feels for Ivy. With destiny on one side and desire on the other, Adrian must help Ivy search for the powerful relic that can save her sister. Yet he knows what Ivy doesn’t: the truth about her own destiny, and a war that could destroy the world. Sooner or later, it will be Ivy on one side, Adrian on the other, and nothing but ashes in between…

  • What a Duke Dares

What a Duke Dares by Anna Campbell

What a Duke Dares by Anna Campbell is $2.99! This is the third book in the Sons of Sin series and seems to have a lot of catnip: a road trip and childhood friends! Readers say this can be read out of order, but warn there is a lot of emphasis on virginity in this one.

    A REPUTATION AT RISK

What woman in her right mind would say no to marrying the dashing Duke of Sedgemoor? Miss Penelope Thorne, that’s who. She’s known Camden Rothermere since they were children-and she also knows she’d bring nothing but scandal to his name.

Cam can hardly believe Penelope turned down his proposal. But if she wants to run off to the Continent and set the rumor mill ablaze, he can’t stop her. Then her brother’s dying request sends him to bring home the one woman he thought he’d finally gotten over.

The only way they’ll both get back to London without their reputations in tatters is to pretend they’re married during the journey. That means kissing like they mean it and even sharing a bed-until it becomes hard to tell where the game ends and true desire begins . . .

  • Believe in Me

Believe in Me by Ella Quinn

Believe in Me by Ella Quinn is $1.99 at Amazon! This is a Kindle Daily Deal and hasn’t been price matched just yet. This is also the sixth book in the Worthingtons series. I get the general sense that Quinn’s historical romances are hit or miss. Which camp do you fall into?

Even the Worthington least likely to wed may find her perfect match . . .

Marriage has worked out quite nicely for her older sisters, yet Lady Augusta Vivers is certain it would end her studies in languages and geography, and stop her from travelling. But when her mother thwarts her plan to attend the only university in Europe that accepts women—in Italy—she is forced to agree to one London Season. Spending her time at parties proves an empty diversion—until she encounters the well-traveled Lord Phineas Carter-Wood. Still, Europe awaits . . .

Phineas has studied architecture all over the world, yet Augusta is his most intriguing discovery yet. How can he resist a woman who loves maps and far-off lands? But her longing for all things foreign hinders any hope of courtship. When he learns her cousins have offered a trip to Europe, he secretly arranges to join their party. For he is determined to show Augusta that a real union is a thrilling adventure of its own. And when their journey is beset by dangerous obstacles, he gets far more opportunity than he bargained for . . .

  1. Kareni says:

The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie is a favorite, and I’ve reread the book numerous times.

  2. FashionablyEvil says:

I don’t recall any details about The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie, but I did give it 4 stars on Goodreads which means I really liked it. (I’m one of those people who reserves 5 stars for life-changing books only.)

(I did not care for the next two books in the series, though: Lady Isabella’s Scandalous Marriage and The Many Sins of Lord Cameron were both meh.)

  3. Varian Ross says:

Maybe I’m getting my books mixed up, but didn’t The Madness of Lord Ian Mackenzie also have a mystery sub-plot to it?

I remember being distinctly unimpressed, but I could be remembering the wrong book.

  4. KitBee says:

WHO’S THAT EARL by Susanna Craig is free on Kindle Unlimited, but it’s also $0.99 at Barnes & Noble today.

WELL PLAYED by Jen DeLuca is $1.99 on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

  5. Darlynne says:

Avery Cockburn writes the Glasgow Lads series, described thusly: “They’re out. They’re proud. They’re a wee bit daft. Meet the Warriors, an all-LGBT football/soccer team from Glasgow, Scotland, as they seek and find love, one lad at a time.”

I have read at least three, maybe four of these books and enjoyed them so much. Besides being funny, there is also the reality of coming out/being out for some of the characters, navigating life and being happy.

I mention this because a set of books 1-3 and an “essential short story” are on sale at Amazon US for $4.99, at Amazon UK for GBP 3.99. Individual books are not particularly expensive either, all opportunities to read some fun books with likable characters.

  6. Lauren says:

The Madness of Lord Ian McKenzie did not work for me. I’m one of the ones who didn’t feel a connection between the leads, probably because I felt Ian came off as very immature. I also did not care for his family and felt like they manipulated him. I just didn’t like the whole family dynamic and chose not to continue with the series.

  7. oceanjasper says:

I remember Lord Ian McKenzie as a memorable character but I wished there was more nuanced emotion in the way the hero and heroine come together. Their relationship seems to be mostly based on sexual attraction.

  8. Lisa F says:

Some good picks here; I would buy TMOLM but I liked the Campbell and especially the Quinn as well.

  9. jz says:

    @Varin Ross

I haven’t read the first one, but the next book in the series, Lady Isabella’s Scandalous Marriage, has a mystery subplot. Someone is impersonating the hero and creating forgeries of his paintings.

I did NOT enjoy the resolution of that plot.

  10. ciem says:

“What a Duke Dares” is terrible. It’s the type of book that gets progressively worse such that you still finish because you are morbidly curious about the ending. I cannot imagine why the writer thinks we should root for the two main characters. The woman positively hates the man…because she loves him and he can’t love? It’s like the plot was out of some romance trope random generator where two outcomes were combined. Anyway. I know this is almost a week late but just had to share.
