  • My One and Only Duke

My One and Only Duke by Grace Burrowes

My One and Only Duke by Grace Burrowes is $1.99! This is part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals, and wow there are a lot of them. This is the first book in the Rogues to Riches series, and the description compares it to a Cinderella story. There is a mystery element to this romance, which some readers loved and others didn’t.

New York Times bestselling author Grace Burrowes introduces us to the unconventional Wentworth family in this charming Regency romance with a Cinderella twist.

A funny thing happened on the way to the gallows…
One minute, London banker Quinn Wentworth is facing execution. The next, he’s declared the long-lost heir to a dukedom. Quinn has fought his way up from the vilest slums, and now he’s ready to use every dirty trick he knows to find the enemy who schemed against him.

There was just one tiny problem…
Jane Winston, the widowed, pregnant daughter of a meddlesome prison preacher, crosses paths with Quinn in jail. Believing his days are numbered, Quinn offers Jane marriage as a way to guarantee her independence and provide for her child. Neither thinks they’ll actually have a future together.

    They were wrong.
He’s a wealthy gutter rat out for vengeance. She’s a minister’s daughter who must turn a marriage of desperation into a proper ducal union. Are they doomed from the start or destined for a happily-ever-after?

  • Jane Doe

Jane Doe by Victoria Helen Stone

RECOMMENDEDJane Doe by Victoria Helen Stone is still available for $1.99 at Amazon! Elyse and Sarah jointly review the book today and gave it a B+. They thought it was an empowering book, but felt the ending was a bit rushed. Please be warned that this book deals with all forms of abuse and abuse against a child. I’ve also heard other readers recommend the audiobook.

A double life with a single purpose: revenge.

Jane’s days at a Midwest insurance company are perfectly ordinary. She blends in well, unremarkably pretty in her floral-print dresses and extra efficient at her low-level job. She’s just the kind of woman middle manager Steven Hepsworth likes—meek, insecure, and willing to defer to a man. No one has any idea who Jane really is. Least of all Steven.

But plain Jane is hiding something. And Steven’s bringing out the worst in her.

Nothing can distract Jane from going straight for his heart: allowing herself to be seduced into Steven’s bed, to insinuate herself into his career and his family, and to expose all his dirty secrets. It’s time for Jane to dig out everything that matters to Steven. So she can take it all away.

Just as he did to her.

  • Ascension

    Ascension by A.S. Fenichel

Ascension by A.S. Fenichel is $2.99! This is a historical romance with paranormal elements and the first book in the Demon Hunters series. Readers definitely say the heroine has a Buffy vibe, but others wanted more in terms of the world building. If the series interests you, the second book is also 99c!

When demons threaten London, Lady Belinda answers the call.

Lord Gabriel Thurston returns home from war to find his fiancée is not the sweet young girl he left behind. She’s grown into a mysterious woman who guards her dark secrets well. When he sees her sneaking away from a ball, he’s convinced it’s for a lover’s rendezvous. Following her to London’s slums, Gabriel watches in horror as his fiancée ruthlessly slay a man.

Lady Belinda Carlisle’s only concern was her dress for the next ball—until demons nearly killed her and changed everything. A lady by day, and a demon hunter by night, she knows where her duty lies. Ending her betrothal is the best way to protect Gabriel from death by a demon’s hand.

Gabriel soon realizes, like him, Belinda has been fighting for her country. He joins in the fight, determined to show her that their love can endure, stronger than ever.

  • Sometimes a Rogue

Sometimes a Rogue by Mary Jo Putney

Sometimes a Rogue by Mary Jo Putney is $1.99! This historical romance is part of the Lost Lords series. Based on the description, there seems to be a bonkers false identity plot. However, fans of Putney have said this one isn’t her best.

    Sometimes…

Even the most proper young lady yearns for adventure. But when the very well bred Miss Sarah Clarke-Townsend impulsively takes the place of her pregnant twin, it puts her own life at risk. If the kidnappers after her sister discover they’ve abducted Sarah instead, she will surely pay with her life…

    A Rogue…

Rob Carmichael survived his disastrous family by turning his back on his heritage and becoming a formidable Bow Street Runner with a talent for rescuing damsels in distress. But Sarah is one damsel who is equal to whatever comes. Whether racing across Ireland with her roguish rescuer or throwing herself into his arms, she challenges Rob at every turn.

  1. WS says:

Lady Belinda Carlisle? “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” and “We Got the Beat” Belinda Carlisle? I’m not going to be able to get past that.

If it were even just spelled differently or something.

  2. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@WS: That reminds me of another historical romance where the hero—a Scottish laird—was named David Cameron! Hello, Editor!

A couple of years ago, I started a book, but I immediately had to DNF when I realized the hero had the exact same name (first and last) as one of my daughter’s ex-boyfriend. I knew I wasn’t going to be able to read a romance with THAT visual n my head. Lol

  3. WS says:

@DiscoDollyDeb I don’t dislike Belinda Carlisle (which at least is not your situation), but the association is just so burned into my mind that I wouldn’t be able to read it without actively picturing the singer and having her music run on a loop inside my head.

  4. Michael I says:

    @WS

Weird note. It’s probably just the power of suggestion, but the cover image somehow kind of looks like Belinda Carlisle to me.

  5. Jill Q. says:

I read a Harlequin Romance a while ago where the heroine was named Melissa Etheridge and yes, it came out well after she was famous. And I love Melissa Etheridge, but seemed like a weird choice for a very hetero whitebread story. . .
Lots of times when I come up with a name in a story, I google it, just in case. And I write for fun, not for publication!

  6. Star says:

Jo Goodman had a secondary character named Fiona Apple in one of her more recent novels. I could not get past this.

  7. Varian Ross says:

I *always* google character names! I write for fun (with aim of being published) and I always google both character and setting names.

  8. hng23 says:

I had some difficulty reading A Duke by Default because the MC is the Duke of Edinburgh. Not sexy!
