  • Devil in Spring

Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas

RECOMMENDED: Devil in Spring by Lisa Kleypas is $3.99 and part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals! So many readers were looking forward to this book when it first released, and Carrie gave it a B+:

Devil in Spring was so delightful that I read it slowly because I had to take frequent squee breaks. I truly cannot sufficiently express how overjoyed this book made me. That said, I don’t think it will be everyone’s catnip, because the main character sometimes seems overly young and naïve, even given her character quirks.

    An eccentric wallflower…

Most debutantes dream of finding a husband. Lady Pandora Ravenel has different plans. The ambitious young beauty would much rather stay at home and plot out her new board game business than take part in the London Season. But one night at a glittering society ball, she’s ensnared in a scandal with a wickedly handsome stranger.

    A cynical rake…

After years of evading marital traps with ease, Gabriel, Lord St. Vincent, has finally been caught-by a rebellious girl who couldn’t be less suitable. In fact, she wants nothing to do with him. But Gabriel finds the high-spirited Pandora irresistible. He’ll do whatever it takes to possess her, even if their marriage of convenience turns out to be the devil’s own bargain.

    A perilous plot…

After succumbing to Gabriel’s skilled and sensuous persuasion, Pandora agrees to become his bride. But soon she discovers that her entrepreneurial endeavors have accidentally involved her in a dangerous conspiracy-and only her husband can keep her safe. As Gabriel protects her from their unknown adversaries, they realize their devil’s bargain may just turn out to be a match made in heaven…

  • Blamed

    Blamed by Edie Harris

RECOMMENDED: Blamed by Edie Harris is 99c! I loved this romantic suspense, especially the part where the heroine thinks the hero is dead and the moment where they reunite. But I will warn you that it’s incredibly violent. I gave it an A-:

This book was an amazingly pleasant surprise and I lost track of the number of good book noises I made while reading it. I’m still getting my feet wet when it comes to romantic suspense, but I picked a good book to try out.

Born into a long line of spies, sanctioned killers and covert weapons developers, Beth Faraday carried out her first hit-for-hire when she was still a teenager.

That part of her life—the American spy royalty part—ended one year ago, with a job gone wrong in Afghanistan. The collateral damage she caused with a single shot was unfathomable and, for Beth, unforgivable. She’s worked hard to build a new life for herself, far away from the family business.

But someone, somewhere, hasn’t forgotten what Beth did in Kabul. And they want revenge.

As the Faraday clan bands together to defend Beth and protect their legacy, Beth is forced to flee her new home with the unlikeliest of allies—MI6 agent Raleigh Vick, the only man she’s ever loved. And the one she thought she’d killed in the desert.

  • The Queen of Blood

The Queen of Blood by Sarah Beth Durst

RECOMMENDEDThe Queen of Blood by Sarah Beth Durst is $2.99! It earned an A grade from Carrie:

It’s a beautiful and at times harrowing book that is overwhelmingly about the lives of women and their relationships to each other. Best of all, it preserves the beauty and terror of fantasy while avoiding many of fantasy’s clichés.

An idealistic young student and a banished warrior become allies in a battle to save their realm in this first book of a mesmerizing epic fantasy series, filled with political intrigue, violent magic, malevolent spirits, and thrilling adventure

Everything has a spirit: the willow tree with leaves that kiss the pond, the stream that feeds the river, the wind that exhales fresh snow . . .

But the spirits that reside within this land want to rid it of all humans. One woman stands between these malevolent spirits and the end of humankind: the queen. She alone has the magical power to prevent the spirits from destroying every man, woman, and child. But queens are still just human, and no matter how strong or good, the threat of danger always looms.

With the position so precarious, young women are chosen to train as heirs. Daleina, a seemingly quiet academy student, is under no illusions as to her claim to the throne, but simply wants to right the wrongs that have befallen the land. Ven, a disgraced champion, has spent his exile secretly fighting against the growing number of spirit attacks. Joining forces, these daring partners embark on a treacherous quest to find the source of the spirits’ restlessness—a journey that will test their courage and trust, and force them to stand against both enemies and friends to save their land . . . before it’s bathed in blood.

  • Taming the Legend

Taming the Legend by Kat Latham

Taming the Legend by Kat Latham is 99c! This is the fourth book in the London Legends series, which features rugby playing heroes. This one has a second chance romance, and the third book is also on sale. I enjoyed this series, but it’s been a hot minute since I’ve read it.

When retiring rugby star Ash Trenton considered his next career move, coaching troubled teens at his ex-girlfriend’s California camp wasn’t on the list. But when Camila Morales reappears after eighteen years, begging for his help, he can’t say no to his first and only love.

Camila was just sixteen when Ash moved on to start his rugby career, leaving her heartbroken…and on her own to make a life-changing decision. Now she needs his help to win a tournament prize and save her camp. Relying on Ash is the last thing she wants. But while it’s hard to get over being dumped for a sport, it’s even harder to ignore the rush of attraction that has only gotten stronger after so many years apart.

Coaching teens is the hardest job Ash has ever had, and the task becomes personal when he begins to fall for Camila all over again. But when he is offered his dream job, will he choose the job–or the woman whose heart he already sacrificed once?

  1. Qualisign says:

Interesting story ensues when the titles are lined up just right.

“Taming the Legend: The Queen of Blood Blamed [the] Devil in Spring.”

  2. CarolynM says:

@Qualisign: I like the way your brain thinks, lol.

  3. FashionablyEvil says:

Ugh, Devil in Spring. I wanted to like it, but I was so frustrated that Pandora’s “I don’t want to marry; I will lose all my legal rights!” is so quickly trumped by “well, here’s a hot duke.” I felt like Kleypas was undermining Pandora—aww, isn’t she adorable with her ideas about women’s rights?

  4. HeatherS says:

I really loved “The Queen of Blood”. I read all four books in the series back to back and they were all Bad Decisions Book Club reads, but the first book was especially compelling, imho.

  5. NT says:

I loved Devil in Spring! Pandora’s ADHD and self-awareness of her character “flaws” were very well drawn … She’s my favorite romance heroine ever! And Gabriel’s courtship was heart-stopping (that gift of waltzing … I DIED right there).

This being 2020, I don’t need anymore dark angsty heroes or random SECRETS.

The story was so refreshing, especially when they realized they were exactly what each other needed but didn’t know until then.

GAH I HEART this book so much!!

  6. Elena says:

Blamed by Edie Harris is wonderful, I wish more people knew about her work. It’s been a couple years since I read it, but I think if you like Carolyn Crane’s “The Associates” series, you’ll like Edie Harris’s work.

  7. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Elena: That sound you hear is me one-clicking BLAMED. You had me at “If you like Carolyn Crane’s The Associates…” I sure wish Crane (aka, Annika Martin) would continue that series.

  8. Annie Kate says:

@FashionablyEvil I had the exact same problem with Devil In Spring. It felt almost like the book didn’t want to acknowledge just *how* real Pandora’s concerns were, which read as incredibly condescending. Combining it with the Evil Ex trope meant the whole book just annoyed the crap out of me.

  9. Lisa F says:

I enjoyed Blamed as well, too!

  10. Kareni says:

I too enjoyed The Queen of Blood by Sarah Beth Durst.

  11. Phoebe says:

Lisa Kleypas is at the top of my author list, and I really liked Devil in Spring. One of the things I like about Kleypas is that her couples have a very even relationship, and need and take care of each other, even though the males are pretty strong characters. It’s a tricky balance, and she rarely disappoints.
