  • Mexican Gothic

    Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia is $2.99! It’s part of today’s Kindle Daily Deals, so grab this one if you can. I thought we ran a review, but I’m probably conflating it with all the great comments we had about it on Slack. We also recommended it in our Horror Romance Rec League.

From the author of Gods of Jade and Shadow comes a reimagining of the classic gothic suspense novel, a story about an isolated mansion in 1950s Mexico — and the brave socialite drawn to its treacherous secrets.

He is trying to poison me. You must come for me, Noemí. You have to save me.

After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find — her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region.

Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough, smart, and has an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.

Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family’s past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.

And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind.

  • Widow of Pale Harbor

Widow of Pale Harbor by Hester Fox

The Widow of Pale Harbor by Hester Fox is $2.99! Elyse enjoyed Fox’s first book, but gave this one a C-. While the book nailed the creepy atmosphere and Gothic elements, it failed in the romance department. If you pick this one up, temper those expectations on the smooching front.

Maine, 1846. Gideon Stone is desperate to escape the ghosts that haunt him in Massachusetts after his wife’s death, so he moves to Pale Harbor, Maine, where there is a vacancy for a new minister. Gideon and his late wife had always dreamed of building their own church, and Pale Harbor is the perfect opportunity.

But not all is as it seems in the sleepy town of Pale Harbor. Strange, unsettling things have been happening, and the townspeople know that only one person can be responsible: Sophronia Carver, a widow who lives with a spinster maid in the decaying Castle Carver on the edge of town. Sophronia is a recluse, rumored to be a witch who killed her husband.

When Gideon meets her, he knows the charming, beautiful woman cannot be guilty of anything. Together, Gideon and Sophronia realize that the mysterious events have one thing in common: they all contain an element from the wildly popular stories of Mr. Edgar Allan Poe. And when the events escalate to murder, Gideon and Sophronia must find the real killer, before it’s too late for them both.

  • The Good, the Bad, and the Duke

The Good, the Bad, and the Duke by Janna MacGregor

The Good, the Bad, and the Duke by Janna MacGregor is $1.99! This is book four in the Cavisham Heiresses series and seems to be a snowy, wintry romance (based upon the cover). For the most part, MacGregor’s historicals have been enjoyed on the site. Have you read any?

A lady with a noble mission. A duke looking for redemption. A forbidden love that cannot be denied…

Lady Daphne Hallworth is ready to celebrate the holidays with her family. But when they accidentally leave her home alone, Daphne uses the time to work on her dream—opening a home for unwed mothers. But her quest isn’t problem-free: She’s in a battle to win the property for the home against her brother’s best friend-turned-enemy, Paul Barstowe, Duke of Southart. And that’s not all: someone has stolen her personal diary, which holds secrets that could devastate her family. Daphne has always harbored private feelings for the man her family scorns…though perhaps striking a bargain with the handsome Duke will solve both their problems?

Paul, long considered good for nothing, aims to open a hospital to honor his brother and restore his reputation. So when a conflict over the land brings him straight into Daphne’s life, they make a deal: He will help her find her diary if Daphne can change her family’s opinion of him. But before he can win her family’s affection, he has to win hers first. Maybe love was the answer to their family feud all along?

  • The Making of a Marquess

The Making of a Marquess by Lynne Conolly

The Making of a Marquess by Lynne Connolly is 99c! This is book two in The Society for Single Ladies series. Book one is also on sale for 99c! The group of heroines is part of a crime-solving club. There are so many “clubs” in historical romance, that it gives me fluffier Warriors vibes. Just roving gangs of wallflowers with varying interests.

The Society for Single Ladies is a crime-solving club founded by the wealthiest woman in London. Yet even Miss Angela Childers’ charming detectives are not immune to the forces of love…

Dorothea Rowland attends a country house party to investigate a long-lost heir—not to find a husband. But when the dashing American claimant discovers her prowling for clues, she is startled—and then seduced—by his provocative kiss. It’s all Dorothea can do to remember her mission. Especially when a series of accidents adds up to something far more dangerous…

Benedict only meant to silence lovely Dorothea—not find himself enamored. What’s a gentleman to do but join forces—and propose to the clever beauty? Yet as Ben and Dorothea pursue the truth about his inheritance, their faux betrothal threatens to become the real thing. Soon, Ben’s plan to return to his life in America is upended—not only by his deepening bond with his bride, but by someone who wants his fortune badly enough to jeopardize his future—even end it. And Dorothea can’t let that happen. Not for the title, but for Ben…

A.S. Byatt’s POSSESSION is a $1.99 KDD today. It’s a brilliant, dual-timeline story about a 19th-century poet and the 20th-century scholars studying his life. I’ve seen it disparagingly referred to as a “literary bodice-ripper,” but it’s so much more than that: there’s mystery, romance, literary research, and how seemingly unrelated characters are actually connected in a number of ways. I think it’s Byatt’s best book. Highly recommended.

  2. Emily C says:

Highly recommend Mexican Gothic!! Gods of Jade and Shadow was good, but this was better. I read it back in August and it was spooky enough then, but would be a great October read. Inspired me to delve into gothic romances too.

“Roving gangs of wallflowers”..Paging Lin Manuel Miranda, I want to see this musical! (when you’re a jet you’re a jet for life)

  5. DiscoDollyDeb says:

The Wallflowers versus The Bluestockings: Rumble at Vauxhall Gardens! Watch out—they’ll cut you with those dance cards!

  6. Stefanie Magura says:

Not only should we page Lin-Manuel Miranda, but we need to get Stephen Sondheim in on this as well. 😉

  7. Laura says:

Not the DD, but is anyone else looking at the ad for Justified Misfortune and wondering WT actual F?

  8. Tam says:

I started ‘Possession’ half-bored to tears, and by the end of it, I was utterly hooked. I also think it may have one of the most memorable endings I’ve ever read. I get tears in my eyes every time.

  9. Susan/DC says:

Serendipity — I thought about “Possession” earlier today and how much I enjoyed it, only to see it mentioned here. It’s one of the few books I’ve read where people get drunk on the power of words and poetry and hold impassioned arguments about the role of literature in Life. Plus almost everyone finds love, the mystery is solved, and the characters are engaging – something for everyone.

  10. Lisa F says:

If you don’t own Mexican Gothic, grab it! It’s a must read in my opinion.
