  • This Side of Murder

This Side of Murder by Anna Lee Huber

RECOMMENDED: This Side of Murder by Anna Lee Huber is $2.99! Sarah has been a huge fan of Huber’s historical mysteries and had this to say:

If you like smart, clever, extremely competent women sleuths with a handful of secrets and a crap ton of inner resilience this is a terrific start to a mystery series. Good for fans of Huber’s other series, and of historical mysteries.

The Great War is over, but in this captivating new mystery from award-winning author Anna Lee Huber, one young widow discovers the real intrigue has only just begun . . .

England, 1919. Verity Kent’s grief over the loss of her husband pierces anew when she receives a cryptic letter, suggesting her beloved Sidney may have committed treason before his untimely death. Determined to dull her pain with revelry, Verity’s first impulse is to dismiss the derogatory claim. But the mystery sender knows too much—including the fact that during the war, Verity worked for the Secret Service, something not even Sidney knew.

Lured to Umbersea Island to attend the engagement party of one of Sidney’s fellow officers, Verity mingles among the men her husband once fought beside, and discovers dark secrets—along with a murder clearly meant to conceal them. Relying on little more than a coded letter, the help of a dashing stranger, and her own sharp instincts, Verity is forced down a path she never imagined—and comes face to face with the shattering possibility that her husband may not have been the man she thought he was. It’s a truth that could set her free—or draw her ever deeper into his deception . . .

  • A Holiday by Gaslight

A Holiday by Gaslight by Mimi Matthews

A Holiday by Gaslight by Mimi Matthews is 99c! This is a historical romance novella set during a house party during the holidays. Sarah reviewed this one and gave it a C+. Here are some of the good things she said:

I liked the central romance, and I really liked Sophie and Ned. I liked the contrast in their conversations from before they agreed to be mutually candid and afterward. There were some moments I found incredibly charming, and some development of the story that was heartfelt and genuine.

    A Dutiful Daughter

Sophie Appersett is quite willing to marry outside of her class to ensure the survival of her family. But the darkly handsome Mr. Edward Sharpe is no run of the mill London merchant. He’s grim and silent. A man of little emotion–or perhaps no emotion at all. After two months of courtship, she’s ready to put an end to things. After all, even a dutiful daughter has her limits.

    A Taciturn Tradesman

Ned has come a long way since his days working as a draper’s assistant. He’s wealthy, ambitious, and eager to take a wife. But the courtship advice issued in The Gentlemen’s Book of Etiquette isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Though he’s followed it to the letter, Miss Appersett still doesn’t wish to see him again. Frustrated and hurt, he’s more than happy to oblige her.

    A Christmas Courtship

Severing ties with her former beau isn’t as straightforward as Sophie envisioned. Her parents are outraged. And then there’s Charles Darwin, Prince Albert, and that dratted gaslight. What’s a girl to do except invite Mr. Sharpe to the annual Christmas party at Appersett House and give him one more chance to win her? But this time there’ll be no false formality. This time they’ll get to know each other for who they really are.

  • Sweet Talk

    Sweet Talk by Julie Garwood

Sweet Talk by Julie Garwood is $2.99! This is the tenth installment in the Buchanan-Renard romantic suspense series, though I believe it can be read as a standalone. Admittedly, I’ve never been able to get into Garwood’s contemporaries, but I have friends who are big fans.

Attorney and IRS agent Olivia Mackenzie is the kind of tough, wise-cracking, powerful woman fans expect from a Garwood protagonist—but this time she has outdone herself. Olivia is not just any woman, she is every woman; flawed in the familiar ways so many of us are.

On the trail of an elaborate Ponzi scheme, one that threatens to ruin the lives of naïve and unsuspecting victims, Olivia suddenly finds her own life is in danger after she asks questions of the wrong people. She is accustomed to fighting for the underdog, but being vulnerable herself is a very different story. Smart enough to know when enough is enough, Olivia calls for reinforcements.

When she meets FBI Agent Grayson Kincaid there is an immediate and obvious attraction, palpable on both sides. Together they make an excellent team to fight corruption but Olivia is also fighting the immediate and intense attraction she feels for Agent Kincaid, and that may be a battle she is bound to lose.

  • Not My Father’s Son

Not My Father’s Son by Alan Cumming

Not My Father’s Son by Alan Cumming is $2.99! This is a highly recommended memoir and readers say that if you didn’t want to give Alan Cumming a hug before, you’ll want to give him one after you finish this book. However, others felt the memoir started off strong, but their interest lapsed during the second half. Have you read this one?

In his unique and engaging voice, the acclaimed actor of stage and screen shares the emotional story of his complicated relationship with his father and the deeply buried family secrets that shaped his life and career.

A beloved star of stage, television, and film—“one of the most fun people in show business” (Time magazine)—Alan Cumming is a successful artist whose diversity and fearlessness is unparalleled. His success masks a painful childhood growing up under the heavy rule of an emotionally and physically abusive father—a relationship that tormented him long into adulthood.

When television producers in the UK approached him to appear on a popular celebrity genealogy show in 2010, Alan enthusiastically agreed. He hoped the show would solve a family mystery involving his maternal grandfather, a celebrated WWII hero who disappeared in the Far East. But as the truth of his family ancestors revealed itself, Alan learned far more than he bargained for about himself, his past, and his own father.

With ribald humor, wit, and incredible insight, Alan seamlessly moves back and forth in time, integrating stories from his childhood in Scotland and his experiences today as a film, television, and theater star. At times suspenseful, deeply moving, and wickedly funny, Not My Father’s Son will make readers laugh even as it breaks their hearts.

  1. DiscoDollyDeb says:

Rachel Van Dyken’s STEALING HER is a $1.99 KDD today. It’s the first book in Van Dyken’s Covet duet; the second book, FINDING HIM, was one of my favorite books of 2020 (it was a KDD last week—go figure). I don’t think STEALING HER is quite as good as FINDING HIM, but if you like the “wrong/right twin” trope, these two books (the heroes are identical twins) will activate your catnip center.

    @ DDD
Rachel Van Dyken’s book Dangerous Exes is on sale for 99 cents. Plus, if you have Kindle Unlimited, Dirty Exes, Dangerous Exes, Stealing Her and Finding Him are all included–as are the audiobooks! For free!

  3. Carrie G says:

I liked Holiday by Gaslight better than Sarah did. I gave it a B. I liked the development of the characters, and I like how they go from stiff and distant to falling in love. For anyone with Audible Escape, this is included and is narrated by Alex Wyndham, who is wonderful. You have a couple of weeks to take advantage.

  4. Gloriamarie Amalfitano says:

I have come to rely on the ratings given and refuse to spend money on anything less than a B+ unless of course, it is a paranormal about dragons.

I have noticed that in the Christmas romances I have read that there seems to be a drop in the quality of the writing. It often feels to me that an otherwise excellent author rushes through the process, or somehow all the Christmas stuff feels forced.

I don’t know how to explain it any better.

  5. Lisa F says:

Holiday by Gaslight is pretty nice – and Cuming’s autobio is pretty fantastic.

  6. Verity W says:

Is absolutely a spoiler for the Alan Cumming book if you watch it, but he talks about his grandfather and the experience of the genealogy show in his cabaret show and sings a tribute song to his grandfather and sufferers of PTSD in his concert show – YouTube has a clip here. I saw him do it live and it’s heartbreaking and brilliant. In fact the whole show was wonderful.
