  • Bellewether

    Bellewether by Susanna Kearsley

Bellewether by Susanna Kearsley is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily Deal. We did a Cover Reveal for this one, since it was such an interesting departure from Kearsley’s usual covers. Some readers felt this one was slow to start, while others loved Kearlsey’s beautiful writing. It has a 3.9-star rating on Goodreads.

“The house, when I first saw it, seemed intent on guarding what it knew; but we all learned, by the end of it, that secrets aren’t such easy things to keep.”

It’s late summer, war is raging, and families are torn apart by divided loyalties and deadly secrets. In this complex and dangerous time, a young French Canadian lieutenant is captured and billeted with a Long Island family, an unwilling and unwelcome guest. As he begins to pitch in with the never-ending household tasks and farm chores, Jean-Philippe de Sabran finds himself drawn to the daughter of the house. Slowly, Lydia Wilde comes to lean on Jean-Philippe, true soldier and gentleman, until their lives become inextricably intertwined. Legend has it that the forbidden love between Jean-Philippe and Lydia ended tragically, but centuries later, the clues they left behind slowly unveil the true story.

Part history, part romance, and all kinds of magic, Susanna Kearsley’s latest masterpiece will draw you in and never let you go, even long after you’ve closed the last page.

  • The Afterward

    The Afterward by E.K. Johnston

RECOMMENDED: The Afterward by E.K. Johnston is $2.99! Carrie review this one and gave it a B+:

It was a solid romance, a solid fantasy, and a lovely case of representation with an all-woman team of adventurers of various skin tones and sexualities. I would read this book again and again and I wish that there was more of it.

Classic high fantasy with a twist from the acclaimed and bestselling author of Star Wars: Ahsoka and Exit, Pursued by a Bear.Johnston’s fans and fantasy devotees will find delightful and inspiration in a brilliant cast of lady knights dealing with fame and difficult choices in the aftermath of a successful quest.

In the year since Sir Erris Quicksword and her fellow lady knights used the mysterious Godsgem to free the king from the Old God’s spell, the people of Cadrium have enjoyed peace and prosperity and the brave lady knights who completed the quest have basked in the glow of their new fame as heroes of the realm–all except the youngest two. Olsa Rhetsdaughter has discovered that the price of fame is her ability to ply her trade as a thief. She’s much too recognizable to make her living picking pockets now, and regular meals on the quest finally jumpstarted puberty so she can no longer pass for a boy when she needs to. And for Apprentice Knight Kalanthe Ironheart, the end of the quest has meant the beginning of her search for a husband–a match that first and foremost must bring with it a bride-price sufficient to pay the debt she took on to train as a knight. To make matters worse, in the year they spent together on the quest, the pickpocket and the knight-in-training fell in love. Meanwhile, the mages entrusted with keeping the Godsgem from falling into the wrong hands have found the task less simple than they imagined, and Cadrium’s golden age may be short-lived if her band of heroes doesn’t act quickly and save the realm once again.

Combining Johnston’s deep affection for the classic quest fantasy of Tolkien, David Eddings, and Tamora Pierce and her unwavering commitment to stories centered on women and LGBTQ characters, The Afterward is a thoroughly entertaining standalone fantasy with a remarkably fresh cast of characters and a delightfully optimistic worldview.

  1. Teresa says:

That is a deal for Belleweather. Lovely novel in her typical style but based in the United States. Inclusive, beautiful historical fiction. Loved it.

  2. Tam says:

My middle schooler who loves Edgar Allan Poe is going to be VERY happy to see the Adler compilation.

  3. Lisa F says:

Oh, I’ve read all of these! The Andrews is a delight, as is the Poe collection and Belleweather. The Afterward is a lot of fun too!

  4. LN says:

I love Susanna Kearsley’s books. They are intelligent and compelling and they make a simple kiss as hot as the most graphic sex scene. Bellewhether is no exception. They usually have a dual timeline with parallel romances and unusually both romances are good. The historical details are also always interesting and based on real events.

  5. Joy says:

The whole Hidden Legacy series by Ilona Andrews is a lot of fun. Great world creation, lots of interesting characters and lots of action and magic. Catalina is delightful–drawn to Alessandro Sagredo but super responsible for her family (her House). You can plunge in with this novel but I recommend the whole series for the “back story”.
