Links: Things on YouTube

Workspace with computer, journal, books, coffee, and glasses. It’s Wednesday!

I’m back from Florida and I’m seriously so happy to be back. My library just started doing curbside pickup and I’m so excited to go out and grab my holds. It’s the little things!

Today’s links are mostly YouTube videos and I hope they lead you down some wonderful rabbit holes!

Frolic has a list of romance characters that rank highly on their pool party guest list. It’s a really good list and though I hate pool parties, I wouldn’t mind attending this one. Who would you invite to your own summer party?

Meet The HU! They are a Mongolian, throat singing metal band. Author Grace Draven even invited them over for lunch!

Julie Nolke’s videos came up recently in my YouTube recommended list. Her comedy is a lovely blend of relatable and reassuring.

One of my absolute favorite YouTubers, RawBeautyKristi, just had some amazing news. After giving up on her infertility struggles for the past fifteen years, she unexpectedly got pregnant. She’s a beauty YouTuber, but her channel initially started out as a way to share her infertility journey.

If you need a happy cry, I highly recommend watching this.

I’ve been watching a lot of videos on death lately and if you ever wanted deep dives into death myths, I cannot recommend Caitlin Doughty’s channel and books enough.

Don’t forget to share what super cool things you’ve seen, read, or listened to this week! And if you have anything you think we’d like to post on a future Wednesday Links, send it my way!

The Hu are an amazing band. I was able to see them in concert and whooo-boy are those guys hot. So confident and accomplished in their music, so proud of their heritage and the energy of their performances are off the charts. The lead singer in the concert was heart-palpitating charismatic. A few weeks ago they were stuck in Australia after Mongolia closed it’s borders early on in the Pandemic, but hopefully they are home now, or will be soon. Check out their YouTube video collaborations with other artists too!

I never had fertility issues, but I didn’t get married until I was in my thirties and had my kids relatively late (obstetrically speaking) in life: my oldest when I was 35 and then twins (surprise!) at 40. After watching Kristi’s video, I want to wrap her up in cotton and make her stay on bed rest until her due date! I hope everything goes well for her and her baby.

I had watched Caitlin Doughty’s video on The Essex a little while ago … seriously scary. She’s done some interesting things – I also watched on on the lake that doesn’t give up its dead.

Hamilton has seriously made the big time: the musical has been parodied by Weird Al Yankovic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oNEdEDbhTQw

Coming Out, a sweet short film about a trans kid:

And if you’re not watching Say I Do on Netflix, why not? It’s as if Queer Eye (same creators) only did weddings. Bring sure to bring tissues.

Want to hear lots of entirely delightful quips and learn all the fascinating facts you never knew you wanted to know? Check out QI (stands for Quite Interesting) on YouTube. Each season of this British panel show, hosted by Stephan Fry for most of its run and then helmed by Sandi Toksvig, features topics beginning with the letter for that season. Season one begins with A, etc. They are now on Season R, so there are many, many episodes to enjoy. If you can find the XL episodes, they are the full 45 minutes long as opposed to the regular episodes at just under 30 minutes. Be choosy about whose feed you use–some have quality issues in the recording. Also, season 1 takes a bit for them to find their feet, but then there’s no stopping the hilarity!

  7. Ellie says:

    Caitlin Doughty’s books are phenomenal.

  8. ReadKnitSnark says:

Related to QI (that Nancy C mentioned above): The QI Elves (the fact finders) have a hilarious podcast about the most interesting facts they’ve uncovered each week called No Such Thing As A Fish. Highly recommended!

  9. San says:

A long chain of word-of-mouth showed me The Hu back last year, and it was super exciting! A lot of fun, great music. I’d also recommend Nine Treasures, another Mongolian group, because The Hu only have one album out so far and i know once i heard them, i wanted more!

I want to thank you for recommending that adorable Julie Nolke but I’m also kinda mad cuz I just spend a ridiculous amount of time watching them when I should be working…or meditating. Or working on my French…

  11. batgirl says:

Recently found Julie Nolke myself, with extra joy that she is Canadian. Can recommend another Canadian, Ryan George, both for his own “Firts Guy to –” series and for his Screen Rants “Pitch Meetings” series.

I’m not sure if I’m linking this correctly. If not, look for Funny or Die’s “Colombian Telenovelas are Hell” https://www.facebook.com/funnyordie/videos/702923120497230/

I know this is a few weeks ago now but… thanks! I’ve been binging Ask a Mortician. I find it weirdly relaxing.
