  • Bringing Down the Duke

Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore

RECOMMENDED: Bringing Down the Duke by Evie Dunmore is $1.99! This may be the first time it’s been on sale. Carrie read this one and gave it a B+:

This story excels in terms of entertaining characters, and I’d love to see a spin-off story about almost every single one of them.

A stunning debut for author Evie Dunmore and her Oxford Rebels, in which a fiercely independent vicar’s daughter takes on a duke in a fiery love story that threatens to upend the British social order.

England, 1879. Annabelle Archer, the brilliant but destitute daughter of a country vicar, has earned herself a place among the first cohort of female students at the renowned University of Oxford. In return for her scholarship, she must support the rising women’s suffrage movement. Her charge: recruit men of influence to champion their cause. Her target: Sebastian Devereux, the cold and calculating Duke of Montgomery who steers Britain’s politics at the Queen’s command. Her challenge: not to give in to the powerful attraction she can’t deny for the man who opposes everything she stands for.

Sebastian is appalled to find a suffragist squad has infiltrated his ducal home, but the real threat is his impossible feelings for green-eyed beauty Annabelle. He is looking for a wife of equal standing to secure the legacy he has worked so hard to rebuild, not an outspoken commoner who could never be his duchess. But he wouldn’t be the greatest strategist of the Kingdom if he couldn’t claim this alluring bluestocking without the promise of a ring…or could he?

Locked in a battle with rising passion and a will matching her own, Annabelle will learn just what it takes to topple a duke…

  • Her Royal Spyness

Her Royal Spyness by Rhys Bowen

Her Royal Spyness by Rhys Bowen is $2.99! This is the first book in a series of the same name, and I know Sarah has been enjoying these books both on paper and audio. She gave this one a B-:

The allure of the story wasn’t the mystery so much as it was Georgie and her friends. I loved her ingenuity and her way of managing people and situations, her determination and her sense of humor, and especially her friendships.

London 1932. Narrator Lady Victoria Georgiana Charlotte Eugenie, 34th in line for the throne, is flat broke. She bolted from Scotland — and engagement to Fishface (Prince Stiegfriend) — for London, where she has:

    a) built a fire in the hearth
    b) fallen for an absolutely unsuitable Irish peer
    c) made a few quid housekeeping incognita, and
    d) been summoned by the Queen to spy on her playboy son

When an arrogant Frenchman trying to swipe our family estate winds up dead in my bathtub, how can I clear my very long family name?

  • Tall, Dark, and Vampire

Tall, Dark, and Vampire by Sara Humphreys

Tall, Dark, and Vampire by Sara Humphreys! This is the first book in the Dead in the City paranormal romance series and it seems like most of the series is at a reduced price. It has a hero and heroine who are both vampires, which I think is a great change. It’s also a second chance romance.

    He’s dying to have her…

She always knew Fate was cruel…

The last person Olivia Hollingsworth expected to see at her Greenwich Village vampire club was her one true love, Doug Paxton—whom she believed to be dead for centuries. Olivia thought she had moved on, but when Doug reappears, her heart knows she’d rather die than lose him again.

But this is beyond the pale…

Ever since Doug can remember, a red-haired siren has haunted his dreams. He never thought she could be real until he goes to investigate a murder at Olivia’s night club. However, as the bodies keep piling up at her feet, he must fight to prove her innocence—even if it costs him his life…

  • Earthseed: The Complete Series

Earthseed: The Complete Series by Octavia Butler

Earthseed: The Complete Series by Octavia E. Butler is $2.99! This is a Kindle Daily deal so get it while you can! This series collects both The Parable of the Sower and the Parable of the Talents. If you’ve been meaning to read Butler or just want to have these on your Kindle, it’s a pretty good deal.

A multiple Hugo and Nebula Award winner’s powerful saga of survival and destiny in a near-future dystopian America.

One of the world’s most respected authors of science fiction imagines an apocalyptic near-future Earth where a remarkable young woman discovers that her destiny calls her to try and change the world around her. Octavia E. Butler’s brilliant two-volume Earthseed saga offers a startling vision of an all-too-possible tomorrow, in which walls offer no protection from a civilization gone mad.

Parable of the Sower: In the aftermath of worldwide ecological and economic apocalypse, minister’s daughter Lauren Oya Olamina escapes the slaughter that claims the lives of her family and nearly every other member of their gated California community. Heading north with two young companions through an American wasteland, the courageous young woman faces dangers at every turn while spreading the word of a remarkable new religion that embraces survival and change.

Parable of the Talents: Called to the new, hard truth of Earthseed, the small community of the dispossessed that now surrounds Lauren Olamina looks to her—their leader—for guidance. But when the evil that has grown out of the ashes of human society destroys all she has built, the prophet is forced to choose between preserving her faith or her family.

The Earthseed novels cement Butler’s reputation as “one of the finest voices in fiction—period” (TheWashington Post Book World). Stunningly prescient and breathtakingly relevant to our times, this dark vision of a future America is a masterwork of powerful speculation that ushers us into a broken, dangerously divided world of bigotry, social inequality, mob violence, and ultimately hope.

If you haven’t read the Earthseed books I highly recommend them but also be aware they can be a difficult read right now (or really, anytime). That being said there is an excellent podcast doing a chapter by chapter deep dive which is excellent.
