HaBO: Snooping Governess

This HaBO comes from Jen, who is looking for a historical romance:

I’m looking for a historical/Regency romance. I read it within the last 2-3 years. I can’t remember if I finished the whole book and what I do remember is kind of vague.

The heroine is possibly a governess, other employee, or guest in the hero’s home. There’s obviously some sexual tension but heroine holds him at bay. The hero tells her that if she ever ventures into the wing/floor of the house where his room is, he’ll take it as a sign that she wants him or that she wants to be his mistress.

I think the first time she ends up going near his room either by accident or because she’s snooping around. And the hero sees her there and definitely at least kissed her. He might have taken her into his room, but I can’t remember if they went beyond kissing that time though.

This could be several historical romances. Can we find the right one?

Miiiiiight be Tessa Dare’s Do You Want To Start A Scandal? Maybe?

  2. Cat says:

Possibly A Scoundrel by Midnight by Anna Campbell?

  3. Ellie says:

I agree that this could be a lot of books, but it’s not Do You Want to Start a Scandal. Charlotte’s definitely a snoop, but nothing else matches up.

  4. Kate says:

    The Governesss Game??

  5. Melissa says:

I agree Kate….The Governess Game was my first thought. Also, it’s a great book❣️

  6. Gloriamarie Amalfitano says:

All I can think of are the many Governess Bride books by Christina Dodd. Even if they are the wrong ones. they are fun to read.

  7. LAF says:

I agree with The Governess Game, especially since it came out in the last 2-3 years.

  8. Tina K says:

I was going to suggest the Governess Game too. There’s a whole plot thread about the hero’s man-cave that the heroine keeps intruding on with lots of banter about bringing mistresses back there. And it fits the 2-3 year timeline.

  9. Kelsey says:

I don’t think it’s a scoundrel by moonlight, she’s out to avenge her sister in that one.

I love finding new books to read in HaBO.

  10. Cass says:

Maybe the Duke of Dark Desires?

  11. Joanie says:

What about Meredith Duran’s Fool me Twice? She is the housekeeper not the governess. Also great!

  12. Momo says:

The Duke Who Ravished Me by Diana Quincy? It’s a longshot, but does have a governess heroine.

  13. Rachael says:

I second The Governess Game being an extremely good book, but I believe the answer is What a Difference A Duke Makes by Lenora Bell.
