  • Sexy Beast

    Sexy Beast by Jackie Ashenden

Sexy Beast by Jackie Ashenden is $1.99! The Dare line is for “steamier” titles and Ashenden writes some pretty hot contemporaries in general. This one has a friends to lovers romance, but with a billionaire hero which I know isn’t everyone’s favorite.

Commanding billionaire Everett Calhoun reveals his sexy dark side to his girl-next-door best friend in this smoking hot second installment of the Billion $ Bastards trilogy!

I was born bad. Maintaining tight control—in business and in the bedroom—is the only way to keep my darkness in check. So when my girl-next-door best friend, Freya, comes to me for a sexual favor, I don’t see the harm in giving her what she needs. After all, I’ve always kept her firmly in the friend zone.

But after showing her that there’s nothing wrong with her ability to orgasm, it’s all I can do to walk away. Unleashing my inner beast on the person who matters most to me is not an option. But she wants me… Is she prepared to follow my every command? To submit to my will and let me take her to the ultimate heights of pleasure?

Getting Freya on her knees should make me feel like the monster I am, but being with her leaves me more vulnerable, more human, than ever. I need to reclaim the friendship we had before I lose control completely, or will she have me on my knees…?

  1. Star says:

Question for anyone who reads the Dare line: I tried the debut crop of Dares and immediately bounced off; I’ve considered giving the line another chance now that it’s had a chance to jell, but every time I check out the titles, they all seem to reduce to “woman explores her submissive side with over-the-top domly dude,” which is very not my thing. Is that actually how the line works, or is there more variety than that? Are there ever heroines who are exploring their toppy or sadistic side, or even exploring something that isn’t D/s?

  2. WS says:

I’m done with books about billionaires…

Finding them very unromantic in the current world.

  3. Kit says:

@Star they’ve been ripping off fifty shades for years now. The closest I ever got to anything about a dominant woman was a series written by Tiffany Reid and even then she could switch between dominant and submissive. I agree it could do with some mixing up.

  4. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Star: I’ve been reading Dare romances since the inception of the line and I have found most of them to be serviceable, but the conflicts often feel simultaneously overblown and yet, paradoxically, too easily resolved (this may be because of Dare’s page count limitations). I don’t read every book or author the line publishes, but it does seem that many of the ones I’ve read do usually feature a mild D/s sexual dynamic—with the male being dominant—which doesn’t bother me, but if that’s not your thing, Dare may not be for you. It’s weird how Harlequin discontinued the (imho) much hotter Blaze line (RIP), which had quite a bit of variety in the sexual dynamics between the MCs, and replaced it with the Dare line which seems to have struggled to find the right balance between “a woman exploring her sexual fantasies” and “just have the hero—with the heroine’s consent—hold her hands above her head while they’re schtupping.”

  5. Amanda says:

My main complaint with the Dare line is that they’re still category romances and for me, don’t have enough of a page count to include all the sexy times and a satisfying romantic arc.

  6. Kit says:

Tiffany Reiz not Reid (might not be actual spelling). Autocorrect is having a field day!

  7. Carole says:

I agree I miss the Harlequin Blaze line that usually had stories that empowered women as they explored their sexuality.

  8. Georgina says:

I love Star’s question, and would like to broaden it: are there *any* category lines that have books with dominant women? I read one years ago, a Loveswept called Have Mercy by Shelley Ann Clark, but that’s the only one I know of.

Incidentally, the Loveswept marketing department really did the author dirty by not making it clear in the blurb that it’s femdom. I remember a number of early negative reviews from people who hadn’t realised and didn’t like it, and wonder if that may be why the author never released another romance. ):

  9. Magenta says:

@TripleD schtupping might be my new favourite word.

  10. Emily C says:

@Magenta and TripleD- I read that word in the voice of Tim Curry as Wadsworth in Clue:
“You *were* jealous that your husband was schtupping Yvette. That’s why you killed him, too!“ followed by the world’s greatest ad-lib from Madeline Kahn.

  11. HaylNoMan says:

Not sure if this is new or on sale, but I just found the complete works of Jane Austin for 2.99 on Amazon

  12. JenM says:

@Georgina, they are technically not categories, but there was a series published by Simon & Schuster’s Pocket star line a few years ago called Domme Nation by Mina Vaughn. The titles are How to Discipline Your Vampire, How to Reprimand Your Rockstar, and How to Punish Your Playboy.

I read the Rockstar one and quite enjoyed it. The heroine was a 6 ft tall college basketball star, who meets a rocker when he’s at her college for a concert (as you do) and they quickly discover a mutual desire for her to tie him up and dominate him. It’s not particularly kinky (mainly a little rope play) but I quite enjoyed the role reversal and that she was in the learning phase of figuring out what she liked.

  13. Susan says:

    @Amanda: Nailed it.

  14. Penny says:

@Emily YES… Madeline Kahn was an absolute treasure.

  15. Vivi12 says:

@Star – Jane O’Reilly has several short novels and all of the ones I’ve read have a female dom theme. They tend to be lighter and sometimes funny.

  16. DiscoDollyDeb says:

@Georgina: There was a Rec League a couple of years ago for domme heroines. Not sure if any category romances were mentioned, but there were quite a lot of recommendations:

  17. Antipodean Shenanigans says:

    Blame It on the Billionaire

    “It” being:
    Global warming
    Destruction of the middle class
    The post-capitalist hell-scape of society
    Etc.

  18. Lisa F says:

Wow, Harlequin Historicals is finally publishing romances set in the ’20s. About time!

  19. Brigit says:

Thanks for the heads-up, everybody, that I need not ever try anything in the Dare line! Just not my cup of tea. This kind of stuff is why I come here. Have I mentioned recently that I love this site? 🙂

  20. Georgina says:

@JenM Thanks! I remember seeing the vampire one back when it was released, but I’m not much of a paranormal reader. Happy to learn there’s more in the series and looking forward to checking them out.

@DiscoDollyDeb Thanks! I’d forgotten about that thread.

(Sorry for the very late reply. I appreciate you both!)
